Deleting our OWN thread comments. (not THE thread)

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

I was wondering if there is a way (or could be a way) to completely delete our own posts.

For example: In our SW Forum we typically have a thread for plants and logistics only. Then start a thread for food only. Particularly in the plant thread, when we update "Robin's Space" with new plants to offer or confirmed trades, the thread isn't updated - only the older entry with updated information. So, I have to put a new thread entry in stating that "my space" has been updated. If we had the option to say, a week later COMPLETELY delete that later entry, it would unclutter the thread. Also, if someone posts in the wrong thread, they can delete the entry and post it in the correct thread. Those are only 2 examples. I know we can edit the thread to take the wording out, but our name/date/time still remains. Again, this option would allow us to ONLY delete our OWN thread entry entirely if needed.

Thanks,

Robin

Robin, we don't have that feature because there is a potential for abusing the edit privileges. (It's easy to forget that when you hit "send" you've essentially published your words, and they become a permanent record in a public forum. Retracting them takes some effort, and should leave an edit trail.)

If you are working with a permanent or semi-permanent thread that needs some clean-up work to remain succinct and on-topic, we (the admin team) can help you--use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page to let us know what you need. Including links to the posts that should be deleted is extremely helpful ;o)

It would be helpful if editing a thread caused it to be "new" again (bumping it up), but I can see arguments both for and against this...

Thanks, Dave. Contacting you to do this could become quite a pain, don't you think? I do understand, but somewhat agree with critterologist. The only thing about that is when you click "Skip To New" it would put you at the post that was edited, then you'd have to scroll down to the next newest post (or bottom of the thread) to see if anything else is new. Not sure how that would work otherwise. Perhaps a poll to see how folks would like it? Some may feel a "bump" update would be worth it - or not. Or, run a test and see what happens?

Robin, the admin team's time is limited, but we are happy to help when there is a real need to edit a thread.

As to the question of making an edited post flag the thread as "new" or "udpated"...I don't think this is merely a matter of preference; rather, there are some programming issues that make the idea a bit of a challenge.

(I'm basing that on other conversations Dave and I have had about the GWD comments and updates, and that it would be nice if they "bubbled" to the top)--we agree it would be nice, but it's not something that is necessarily easy to accomplish.

I understand, Terry. Thanks for listening, considering my idea and responding. Franky, the need for that option wouldn't be needed quite as much year round with the exception of semi-annual round-up threads for specific information only.

Happy Gardening,

I do remember some discussion about bumping up edited comments in the Watchdog... The fact that it would be a pain in the tail to program is enough reason to leave things as they are, I think. There's a big difference between discussing the suitability of changes that are feasible and asking about things that can't happen without a major rebuild. :-)

Gotcha, Critter. Hey, it was just a thought. :-)

Thoughts are good! One of the things I really appreciate DG is admin's willingness to listen and respond to our thoughts on how things work here and how they might be better.

Ditto!

Dave???? Terry????

I just posted in our Swap for November and started a new thread about "discussions" on plants before we post them in our logistics thread.

Please read my last post there. I'm hoping you can make the "discussion" thread a sticky.

Thanks a million,

Robin

Robin, it looks like you're starting a new thread?

If you don't mind, would you please use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of any page of the site to let us know what thread should be "stickied" (a link to it would be great!)

Either Melody or I can help you with it from there ;o)

Will do. Sorry. Stand by...
