CLOSED: Free Seed for Newbies! 07/04/09 Directions to get your seed

Orange Park, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, it looks like this thread is still open, so why not!?

I'd love to get some canna, lily, or other tropical seeds. Flamethrower palms? I'll send my envie tomorrow. What size bubble envie do you need for this?

Thanks!

Tropicool

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

This one's always open so newbies can find the directions for the free seeds - lol. Just the average size bubble envie is fine - not the giant ones.

Send your "wish list" in your envie. Arejay is really good about checking your list and if she has it you'll get it!

Welcome!

Kelly

Oh look at that...they all work!! Yeay */*

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

She got it right! Way to go Robin - lol...

I'm in 9a, but I'm also in the desert - lol. We have a very unique growing situation here.
Seed starting can be done in many ways. Personally, I prefer to direct sow seeds based on the planting calendar for my area. Lots of people use peat pellets. You can also use a sterile seed starting mix like Jiffy - you can get it at all the big box stores. Whatever medium you use I would suggest mixing a dash of cinnamon with your mix before planting. That's a trick I learned from LazLo that really helps to prevent damping off of your seedlings. There is a seed germination forum where you can get specific questions answered:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/germination/all/

Or try your regional forum to get answers from people in your area... This link is to the forum page. Regional forums are all the way at the bottom:

Hope this helps!

OK, arejay, you have an envelope headed your way on Wednesday. I have some Heliconia psittacorum in there for you to add to the stash for others. Looking for tropical, tropical, tropicals! Why not take advantage of living in Fla?

Thanks!

Envie sent. Count the stamps - there are extras. The seeds are in there, too

I'm out of the country for the next couple of weeks, so no rush on the return...

AreJay59 sent me over to introduce myself and join in the wild and crazy fun. I am a newbie. Went wild collecting seeds this year; my own, friends, by the library, you name it. I just renewed my Daves Garden membership today, so want to connect. Tell me what keeps you guys connected? How can I contribute to the wellbeing of this seedie group?

Thanks for the welcome Arejay59. I see you are a Maine-ah too. I am off to Ellsworth Feed for a few seed starting supplies, and will stop and get bubble wrap envelopes and stamps.

This looks like a great place - everyone is friendly and polite! I have dipped my toes into a couple of threads and was wondering how to branch out and explore more. By the way the garden watchdog has saved me money already. Phew that was a close call - was going to send an order to a mail order that had consistently bad reviews. THANKS!

Love it here!

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)
