July Gessie Photos

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Beautiful photos everyone! I have been on vacation and was out of town visiting my Mom for a few days. I have a question about the homemade fertilizer that people are using on their plants... see this thread please: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/956114/
I helped my Mom mix up a bid batch for all her roses and dahlias and such... and she sent me home with some as well. I have plumies and brugs that can use it, but my question is... can this be used safely on gessies and other indoor plants? Has anyone had experience with it inside? I don't want to burn my plants up or kill them all together! Any input from y'all is greatly appreciated!

My streps survived my four day absence... *whew!* They were the only plants I was worried about losing while gone!

WildRose.........nice pictures of both plants and vacation. There is still debate about that mix you are referring to as to how beneficial it is on hoyas, brugs, etc.

I wouldn't even think of using it on gessies.......not even a possibility.
Jump in someone else and be honest about your opinion.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

me neither, not on gessies, maybe on something i would'ent be afraid to lose, as you just don't know till you try it.

Thanks Gail... I will watch for others' opinions on that recipe, but I value your opinion and advice as I know you keep alot of plants and have used a number of different fertilizers to get to where you are today. I appreciate it!

:o)

And thanks to you too Mrs Bonnie... we cross-posted!

Wow,that looks like a great vacation spot!! Where is it ?
Your Streps. are beautiful.

Lynn

Lynn... the Cascades are in Pembroke, Virginia... about 8 mles from my home towm.
The falls are about 85 feet high, and the only way in to them is a two mile hike in, and a two mile hike out!
That's pure mountain spring water and it was about 48 degrees that day! At least the temps were in the upper 80s!

VA Rose - I have used that beer mix on all of my plants, indoors and out, at one time or another, including standard AV's, with no problems. I use a very weak solution with every watering, maybe about a tsp or less per gallon of water. I have never added tea tree oil, guess that is an antifungal or something. I am still using it on outside plants and hoyas.

However, I do not swear by it like some people. I probably mix up a batch every spring, but I use other fertilizers as well, and think they all work about the same. Right now I am using an AV fertilizer on all my mini AV's, and probably will not use the beer mix on them.

I happen to be a believer that if your plants are repotted regularly in good quality mix, you should not need to fertilize so much, they will get the nutrients they need from the mix. For many years I did not fertlize at all and still had beautiful blooming hoyas and AV's - I think fertilizers are overrated and its all about just another industry with it's hand in our pockets. However, I now use a hoya mix with very little soil, mostly orchid bark and perlite, so the plants need a little extra now and then.

I have a few pictures from yesterday.

There is such a difference in hybridizing and the one thing I love about David Thompson's plants is that they are bred to produce so many flowers.

Here is Batik.........just keeps on blooming

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I love your pictures Gail!! I hope my baby Goldleaf sent me gets to look like that.
All I have today is a slightly blurry picture of C. Firebird. She's just a baby, but she sure wants to bloom.

Thanks, ladies. I started with 3 stolons and since then, have propagated from this plant many more plants!!

I used to grow Columneas but just don't have room for everything..........isn't that amazing that she wants to bloom so young!!

South, TX

Yes, how nice she is blooming already! Guess she is happy!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

She had 3 blooms, but I knocked one off when I moved her....darn. I have only a few Columneas, one Nemanathus, and one Aeschyanthus, because I only have room for 3-4 plants that will need to hang at some point.I keep my Episcias very small so I can grow them on shelves.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

One time I ran out of room on the shelves, Lynn, so I simply set up some tables in an east window and they stayed happy for months on end...........in fact, I had to close the blind after 10 am.

Gail, I have noticed that with leaves that were all rooted at the same time but split up so that half went in a window, the other half under lights - the leaves getting natural light are getting the babies first. And it isn't even bright light, mostly a north, slightly eastern exposure.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail,
I am already thinking about moving some of my plants to windows. Some of my AVS are getting too much light.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

This is about the size I keep them so I don't have to hang them. This 'Fannie Hague' was this size or larger when Tommie sent it to me.

How beautiful, Lynn..............

I thought something was wrong with all my streps..........and our club president swears that streps know when summer is here and told me to cut back on the gro lights and just turn them on for 10-11 hours a day.................

Even though my air conditioning stays down low, streps hate summer..............

Where is Tommie? I haven't seen her around lately.............

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Yes,I'm thinking about cutting back the hours on my lights. Most of the AVS don't mind, but some that are closer to the lights are getting bunched up and tight, but no sign of other problems.
I heard from Tommie last week and she was fine. ^_^ She was moving all of her beautiful Begonias and working really hard outside.

I

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I adore begonias and all my canes are just hanging on through this heat...........I cut them back the other day and am rooting some.........once the cooler weather comes, they just get so excited and bloom like crazy. But right now.......it is a matter of just survival.
