taynor, I love the naked necked turken!!! I want one!!
Be quiet Haystack :p (in advance).
New Adventure #2... come along
Ha~Ha~Ha~Ha~ ROTFL Hay is a Alien i thought something was wrong...............Ha~Ha~Ha~~~~~~
Never been fond of the turkens just don't like the neck reminds me of a old buzzard LOL~~~~~~~~~~
taynors, I'm trying to locate someplace here that might have them. Hoping to get one next year.
I've looked at the naked necks a couple of times, but always worried they'd get cold in the winter, or that the others would pick on them.
Melissa, we just had to keep him from our other rooster, because he pecked at him. Ozzie was a lover, not a fighter. That's another thing I liked about him. He seemed to prefer not to fight.
I'm in Wisconsin, and the Chickens are at my boyfriends place near the UP Michigan and Wisconson boarder. He did very well in the winter. He did get frost bite on his comb and lost all the little bumps on it. His comb was quite interesting then, it was just completely rounded over. But he had no problems with the winter.
You have to make sure they have access to shade though, because that neck can get sunburned in the summer. Try to keep them out of the sun though.......LOL They go where they want to go.
We lost him suddenly in the summer. He was with us one day and gone the next :(
I have been raising Turkens(naked necks) for years. They are extremely hardy and cold tolerant. Great dual purpose birds with large brown eggs and less feathers means less plucking. They really did develop the breed to have less feathers for easier processing(plucking feathers). I sell quite a few and average 20.00/bird. I am building a bigger flock for the spring. They sold so well this year. I hope to sell more next year.
Geo
Hey George! You need to stop in more often!! Although Dual Purpose around here tends to mean Eggs and Poo. LOL
Kassy, I love them when they're not fighters... my BCMarans Roo seems to be like that too.. he just minds his own business and doesn't mind getting picked up for a cuddle.
Melissa when i was a teen i had a fighting rooster as a pet he was sweet as sugar never even pecked me but he would run my dad all over the yard LOL!!
We had Turkens and they are absolutely sweet! I love their soft nature.. but the other birds don't. Their soft skinned necks are a prime target.. and the wounds were horrible.. really fast..
If I had a place for them.. I'd have a whole flock! I love how sweet and docile they are! Not to mention the looks on people's faces when they see them! LOL
Agrees with Melissa :)
George, lets not talking about plucking :p LOL But nice to meet another person who likes turkens :)
None of our birds get plucked :p, other then by the other birds if they are establishing the pecking order. Ours are all raised for egg laying. And pest control. (Did anyone ever notice that they won't touch a Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle?)
I wanted to mate my turken with out big brown girls, (His girlfriends). I knew turkens lay big brown eggs, and so do they. I was hoping to get some of the turken traits in one, but that never happened. :(
And yes Melissa, I love them when they are not fighters.
Two of our black roosters were fighters. We found homes for them.
Harmony, that sounds like our 2 black guys.
ZZ, none of our hens bothered our turken, only the rooster that was with him. And that was only because they were both roosters and the other one wanted to make sure Ozzie knew he was the boss.
Wow Kassy! You are lucky! I almost had to stitch up ours.. Completely degloved her neck... I thought she was gonna die when I first saw it..
Hope I didn't say something to ruffle your feathers!
No ZZ, not at all.
I know how mild gentle turkens are :)
Kassy you know so much about chickens you are a great asset to Daves {;~)
Well good afternoon
well i got a add in Craigs list for homes for them and i will put one in our local paper
I just hope i can find them homes soon .
good to know on the Turkens about their personality .
with the other two roo's i don't let the kids inside the coop anymore . The white one i just don't trust him . He is big an pretty , i do like him alot and the other is red with black also very pretty
Geo has pretty chickens . :)
Sue, as young as they are, I doubt they're going to hurt the kids.... they don't have spurs yet do they?
We've only had one rooster that would flog, and he would flog youngest son every time he got the chance... he was probably 9 or 10 at the time. It was a big Buff Orpington, but not as big as our current Buff Roo.

Sounds like a bunch of fun to watch .
our friend did them in Idaho and they kids liked it .
well off to drink coffee
Hi to everyone
sue
taylors, we have chickens that think they can roost on the nest boxes too. Some of ours do have a roof on then, and then the chicken will usually go up there to roost. She seems to like to lay down more, and a flat roof on the nest box works great for her.
And I noticed when we put a new one in with them, the new one will roost on the nest box and not mingle with the other chickens right away.
Hey Kassy
You know how many chickens I have ever plucked? Zero! I just don't have the heart to do it. I have hatched and/or gotten my chickens as day old chicks. They all are named. I even will take the puny chicks and work with them. My friends didn't know about splay leg and let a few of their chicks get it. I used rubber bands as braces and worked with those little chicks. Most made it and even right now I have a Langsun that sat and has one little chick and she was one that was to be "put down" by my friends. Not to offend anyone, but we call them our "short bus chickens" They may walk a little funny and not run as fast as the others, but they are free ranged, eating bugs and getting to act like chickens. Can you tell I'm a sucker for the under dog?? LOL
George
Tapping foot waiting to hear from Melissa.
Melissa is tapping foot waiting to hear something from the chicks. ;) Nothing yet. I incubated them on the low end of the range, and that can delay the hatch... so we'll see. Hopefully Soon!!
OH...... My kind of guy George!! ;-)
Dang, if we ever have a problem with our chicks, I think I will be contacting you for help :)
My boyfriend is the same way. Our chickens are there for eggs and pest control and if you saw any of ours, they do have names..........LOL. They are also concidered pets.
Only the nasty roosters will leave us, but then we find them a different home.
I still want a turken George :(
Kassy :)
PS. I'll meet you on the flower forum after I can get some pictures of my daylillies. With that name, you might know what they are. ;-)
Crossing fingers for Melissa :)

I will check out wally tomorrow.
well chickens got out again LOL and i forgot to close the door when i left today uhg
sooooo here they are
how many eggs are peeping Melissa ? do you know yet ?
Taynor's One nest box is enough for five chickens, seriously if you have five girls one is all you need. Haystack
Hi taynors,
They will share a nest box, honest they will. We have had 2 hens sitting in the same box some times. I don't know why, when 3 others were open. Maybe they want to share the moment?
In one coop we have 3 nest boxes and 7 hens. Not all of them will be in at the same time to lay an egg :)
OK melissa, where are you?
We are waiting to hear :)
Haystack, don't tell me you and I think alike too? :-|
Suspense is really getting to me. Everytime this thread pops up, I think, there is pipping or cheeping or something! Please little chickies, give us a sign......
I haven't checked for peeping yet... kids are still up and have tv's blaring... will in a bit.
Today is the full moon, so we'll see.
Sue, don't order one from McMurray, I'll take pictures of ours, and T can build from them.... OK? Do you have Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens? It is REALLY helpful. You should get it. http://www.amazon.com/Storeys-Guide-Raising-Chickens-Facilities/dp/158017325X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247023192&sr=8-1
Hubby finished the "old" chicks new home today. We Modeled it after Haystack's amazing setup he has for his girls. We'll keep these guys in here until they're big enough to be with the rest of them, and then the new chicks will move in, and eventually I'll use it for breeding. He's going to build a duplicate one on the opposite side of this part of the barn.
It's 8 feet long and 3 feet wide, doors on either end, two nesting boxes, and one roost that they haven't tried yet. We just used a former patio table shell to put it on, legs will come later when he puts it in permanently.
WOW, that Chickie really grew. Forgot how fast they really do grow.
