Wow.. this brings back memories! I only have one brug that is a cat magnet.. and that is whiskers. The lil green inch worm things I think are tobacco worms? I've tried BT and it didn't work.. but maby I didn't give it enough time.

joeswife... Don't stress too much.. Spider mites are a given with brugs.. gotta be able to hit them with the big guns or just accept them.. If you have them.(brugs) they will come (mites) Sorry.. it's true.... I finally gave up the fight..

Kim, the county told me to use deadline for snails.. I don't have snails.. I guess with all the slugs I have to fight, there is no more room! Yeah.. they may not crawl ON the lava rock, but that doesn't stop them.. the can slime up the trunk.. easy. I've seen em go 4' up... I need to treat the flowerbed.. it's so neglected..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Anytime always up late,
I see you don't have any shade, your getting quite the collection!!!!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

ZZbabies....we're in the same climate....do you think we get mites more often beccause of the dryness? You say it's a "given" here, how do you deal with it? It's the first time I have large brugs and I'm not sure how to treat for those mites!

Deadline Force II
Slug and Snail Killer
Kill Slugs and Snails
Order Deadline Liquid Slug and Snail Bait

Be cautious using this liquid slug bait in areas where pets or wildlife can possibly ingest the material. If pets or wildlife are present you should use Sluggo, a great slug and snail killer that is safe around animals.
Deadline cannot be shipped to CO, DE, MA, MI, SC, SD, TN, UT

Convenient, clean and effective, Deadline Force II resists rain. Put Deadline around tender shoots. A thin line of Deadline around the area you want to protect will keep new migrants from taking up residence in your yard. Deadline can be used around flowers, lawns, ornamentals, vegetables and berries to kill slugs.

Deadline Force II is specially formulated to attract and control slugs and snails. The presence of slugs and snails can be detected by their shiny mucous trail. They are night feeders and prefer damp, cool places.

Apply this product in areas likely to be infested at the beginning of the spring planting season before damage occurs and as needed during periods of damp weather. Treat every 3 to 4 weeks or as needed. During periods of high rainfall or frequent waterings, it may be necessary to treat more often.
If ground is dry, thoroughly water areas to be treated. For best results, apply in the evening around flowers, ornamental plants, vegetable gardens, lawn areas. Apply only to the soil surface around plants. Do not apply directly to plants. Do not mix with any seeds prior to application.

Directions
Flowers and Lawns: Flip up spout and lightly squeeze a line of drops 3 to 4 inches apart around flower beds and lawn edges. Apply at any time but preferably in early evening. Repeat applications as needed.

Vegetable Gardens: Apply a line of drops 3 to 4 inches apart between berry and vegetable plants.

Ornamentals: Azaleas, begonias, camellias, chrysanthemums, daffodils, dahlias, daises, geraniums, honeysuckle, hydrangeas, ice plant, impatiens, iris, marigolds, pansies, petunias, rhododendrons, roses, snapdragons, sweet peas, tulips.

My leaves look like lace!!! But it is not slugs! It is small green worms with a voracious appetite. Have also found some black and white worms on the brugs. One of them had over 100 of the worms on it and had skeletonized the leaves. What can you use on those worms??

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I don't know Linda : ( But someone will come along that knows about the black and white worms.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Do you all spray your leaves with water everynite?
Its so hot here I have to water mine everynite,so I spray the leaves hard, until I see flower buds, about to open, then I stop until blooming is over with, then I go right back to spraying the foliage with water.
It's always pretty much windy here,so I don't have to worry about fungus getting to my plants,it would probably be better in the morning to do this.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

sounds like an elm type worm or army worm.. try to use soap and water spray then rinse..

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

and if all else fails, look for Thuricide (Bt) at your garden center/big box store. It is formulated especially for worms/caterpillars and works very well.

Jacksonville, FL

Tropicman --I hand water daily with hose--both the soil and the leaves. Themoonhowl--Thank you! I will try the thuricide next week and see if that helps. Since I have both the green worms and the black white worms that might be the solution

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I spray and water before work Don. If I don't the ones in pots will be weeping brugs : / then sometimes after work too!
Linda i knew someone would help!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well the hard spray works for me,also it keeps those nasty spider mites away!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I think maybe the slugs and snails have eaten any mites around here ; } just slimed them right up...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I found a nest of teeny tiny snails today while weeding and thinning.. down went the coffee grounds and the sluggo.. ugh.. grass hoppers are having a good time eating, I catch them and kill them, most of them are very small

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Debra, if your grasshoppers are very small, now is the time to use NOLO. Once they get past the nymph stage, not much works on them and the damage they do makes snail and caterpiller damage seem like nothing.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

NOLO? is that abbreviated for something?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

It's a brand name for a grasshopper bait. It consists of wheat bran coated with Nosema locustae spores, a protozoan that infects only grasshoppers. I've bought it at a local organic nursery. Box stores don't usually carry it.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

okay, thanks!

Ref Post #6763929

I have the same issues going on on several plants myself.
Some of the new growth comes out as stiff as wood, breaks off very easily. I SEE NO mites even with a magn. glass.

I am able to see red spidermites with ease, it is not my vision. There has to be an answer other than " bugs"

A deficiency ? Because it only starts with new growth , then seems to work 'down' to older leaves?
I have looked in every book I own and cannot find an answer or a fix...
HELP please!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Dedda, I'm with you! Someone...help! lol

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

What type of fertilizer are you using?
And does it have all the trace elements in it?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I have many mature palm trees in the same area, so in addition to the rose fertilizer I use on all my Brugs, this one is probably also getting palm tree fertilizer (it does have all trace elements )....could it be excess ferts?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well too much fertilizer makes new growth weak and flimsy ,very acceptable to bad bugs.
I was thinking more of the lines of too much or not enough of the trace elements, might have the effect of causing the hard stems, not having a balance of something, but what that might be,is what I don't know,I've never had that problem before, but have had the too much nitrogen fertilizer with the results of weak growth and so on!
I guess a soil test is needed here!!!
