Here are some pics of damage in my garden.I thought slugs we have had so much rain lately. Now I am not so sure. Any thoughts?
I need help!!!
I have put down sluggo only to find out baby slugs don't eat it! I have sprayed ammonia and water mixed..i put down lava rock..dryer lint...epsom salt..diatomaceous earth.. I have a bunch of baby mantis jumping around..
Thanks for looking.
Did you look under the leaves for very tiny green caterpillars? They can be hard to spot because they will sometimes lie alongside the natural veins on the undersides of the leaf making them very hard to see.

Some of my plants looked just like yours Kim. I found little green inch worms on them. They're hard to spot because they are the same color as the leaves. I just pick them off.
me too Kim, my poor White Knight looks the same way, everyday I would find two to three worms, nw I see some un chewed growth so hope I got them all.. I also caught some baby grass hoppers on my b arboreas.. they chew from the edges out.. look like bug bite marks .. *sigh* I hate bugs that eat plants.
Well if I could see them I sure would pick them off! They hide really good. I had what seemed like hundreds of baby slugs. Don't see many anymore. Still find a few big ones tho. So depressing to see the harm that bugs do ; ( I am trying not to use strong chemicals. I have ladybugs and praying mantis in the garden.. Thanks ladies
Kim I am glad you have lady bugs and mantis, I do too, I ordered mine early spring, tho.. I found three baby matis on my four o'clocks.. so cute.. I have found baby snails so tiny, they looked like specks of dirt eating my brugs.. they come out at night.. I always go out at night with a flash light now and see what's chewing at night on my plants.. sounds crazy, but I care alot about my plants .. like I know you do..
I had about 8 mantis egg sacs? And found out about baby slugs by stalking the garden at night lol!!!
Have a wonderful day : )
Have you tried Bt?
Not yet..I hope HD has it the flower and garden shop only had insect sop : (
Thanks
Bt is the only thing organic that will kill those miserable green worms. I have them too!
Have you tried Beer? Hear it is good for slugs and snails. Put a little saucer and wait for them to wonder in and drink their little selves to Oblivion. I thought maybe you had Japanese Beetles, that is what my poor Elm trees look like. They were late coming out but ; Goodness are they ever hungry. I've got a few holes in mine but nothing like yours. Wonder how long does it take a bloom toappear. My Brug is about 4 foot and nothing yet?????
What is the ratio of bt to a gallon of water?
okay what is BT?
Well.. I get BT as a powder.. that is dusted on the leaves.. a bit difficult to get the undersides of the leaf.. [ as recomended ] but if they eat through to the top they will get it there...
It'sBacillus thuringiensis a naturally occouring item... a tiny bit of leaf must be eaten by the cat... which causes it to stop feeding in a few hours..due to the stomach upset it causes.. and the animal is dead in a day or so.. I get mine in a power form.. in a product calleed Dipel .... apply every seven to ten days .. to getthe newly emerging..
restrictions allow it to be used on food items... up to the time of harvest.. it has no effect on us at all..but it quite lethal on catapillars
bt is Bacillus Thuringiensis. Mosquito dunks ( bt ) is used for ponds or bogs. Guess that's why I was thinking that it was to be disolved in water, and used as a soil drench.
I found Thuricide which is a liquid Bacillus Thuringiensis.
I use the liquid one. Can't recall the ratio, but it says it in the bottle! : )
for the soil drench with the dunks.. [ for black soil knats here ] I have 10 gallons of water..with four dunks in it... likely enough for an acre of pond.. if it would only stop raining sometime.. a few days without that 45 minute .. or more...shower ..
i'd use it.. with so much rain.. and such constantly wet soil.. the knats have done real well ..
That said.. I've no real information.. as to what makes a killing level for them.. this is the first application at this level..
Well I don't want to deal with the ewwww of drowned slugs ; } I have not seen any JB"s since I used milky spore a few years ago. Rain here too! The local hardware says they have some BT. I really would like the liquid. I'm just coming in from killing baby slugs got a few big ones too!
Bt is not for slugs. Bt is for catterpillars. Sluggo is for slugs.
Oh I know I have both double yuck!!!! I put down Sluggo too. The baby slugs don't eat it..so I have read : (
well.. the soil got dry..with a day of sun and wind so I applied my treatment for the knats.. this strength seems fine.. no harm to the plants.. and there seems to be fewer knats a day or two later..but then the rains again... getting the big leaves on most everything out of the direct winds.. and buds galore..some for their second round of the season.. I wish some were out yesterday.. as there was a new backdrop to photograph aganst...
Hi Kim! That is slug damage, and not the terrible lil green inch worms that can eat a brug overnight. I have those and they are a nightmare. The worms gather on new growth, and there is a dirt lookin stuff that are the eggs.
Walmart has a powder stuff that comes in a box.. It is called Snail and earwig bait I think.. It's a light brown box the size of a cereal box... It's not expensive, and it is the only thing I've found that works great for slugs, snails and earwigs. I put it in a shaker bottle and sprinkle a light dusting on damp ground under the plants.
If you can't get any, you can grind up eggshells real fine and pile them around the trunk of the plant.
You won't catch slugs at night as well as early morning. I have a horrible slug problem and always have. They can keep a sprout cut to the ground!
Good luck!
I do not frequent brug forum but I have several brugs and ordered 8 more varieties and So far my brugs are healthy looking. i do however use diluted dish soap for a lot of leaf problems and it helps. Bellieg
ZZbabiez, I always have a hard time to tell between slug and catt. damage! How can you tell?
I just got back from Wmart.. the box says INSECT Killer.. NOT slug & Snail.. it's made by Cory's just like the snail stuff... but this works MUCH better for slugs.. Sorry I don't have a pic.
Cats will eat new growth, and they are tiny.. hiding in the tiny new growth.. making it look like there were big holes when the leaves mature.
Slugs will attack from the bottom and eat a mature leaf to the ribs... like in Kim's pic.
Got it....but if you can't actually see the culprit, can you tell by the shape of the damage, for example?
Yes, the lower leaves are slugs... eaten to the ribs..
AND there will be dried slime... I think I see a bit of it on Kim's pic. Something else I didn't notice till now was the rocks.. perfect hide out for slugs!
edited to add one more thing...
I just got back in from washing off leaves and forgot to mention that even if you can't see cats.. you can see poo.. lil black dots of poo especially in new growth.. cats for sure.

Hi Joyce! Nice to hear from you : ) I will look for some of that killer. Some are eaten so bad that I don't think they will make it! Oh and them rocks...they are lava rocks what a joke supposed to not be able to slime across yeah right : ( What a waste of time and money they sleep in them!
Well, I came home to my 2 favorite brugs out front covered in spidermite webbs, at first I thought they were "sun burned" , but DH said they weren't sunbruned before why now? so I got a close look and freaked and I mean freaked out.
Pulled them out of their spots, stripped them clean and trashed everything, sprayed with soap and water and Bayers, changed the soil, soaked the soil with a bayer mix, and spread coffee grounds all around.. everywhere! then I sprayed with a milk mixture.. everything.. Maya who is across the way is not showing anysigns of bad stuff so far. I am glad I didn't move her to that corner Like I had planned on.. poor white knight is all holed up from the green worms, and two of my stardancerX? seedlings were stripped clean from a tiny baby snail I found at the base , so transplanted them too with new everything after a 3 minute hot bath.. between the grasshippers , snails, slugs and now those dreaded spirdermites, I am about to have a coronary from anxiety....everything out back on the south fence under the hedge is doing fine.. I don't get it..
