My babies

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have always been told not to pop up babies (unless they are minis) until the leaves are almost dime size. Here are some I potted up tonight. The Shiawasee Trail ones are smaller than the Sky Blue. They don't look as thick as most ones do...........

Remember, I am almost as new as you at this..........or it has been awhile since I did this.......

I should have turned the gro lights off on these............they were only planted about 30 minutes ago.

I have some Shiawasee Trail rooting too...so Gail, do you uncover them after the babies pop up or do you leave the covers on for a while longer?

I keep them domed until the day I pot them up in individual pots and then leave the dome on for another few weeks at least. I try to turn the dome after a couple of weeks to slowly let the new babies adjust to my environment.

Please don't take your original dome off just because babies are appearing..........at least that is how I know to grow them............

I am never in a hurry to take the dome off even after I pot them up. These little babies have been potted up for about two weeks and they are growing fine..........but the clear dome has just been turned slightly today to start allowing room air to come in..........

Ok Gail, will leave the covers on for now!

Another "problem" - this is Rob's Cool Fruit. Hard to see in the pic, but the bottom rows of foliage are growing downwards, while the center is growing up - and there in between I see some little suckers forming. Is this common for this plant? I prefer to keep it as a little rosette, but the shape has really changed...should I nip the suckers off while they are still small?

Also, did this happen because I removed a few leaves that were not looking good, or are some plants just prone to growing this way?

I was told to get those suckers in a hurry..........as soon as you can........
I just potted up some of Rob's and they are still in a smaller size pot than yours is...........

My attitude is that Rob's minis are hard to grow in the beginning..........so just keep it alive and then you can get rougher by taking outer leaves off if necessary...........but I would put her in a smaller container.........

Here is Rob's Bed Bug and I just moved her from a one inch pot to this round 1 1/2" round pot. Before long she is going to need a ring to hold her leaves up. In the meantime, a styrofoam small plate cut on one side and open the middle up will work for now.

I think that Rob has a section on his site about growing minis and how the maximum size pot should never exceed 2" when they are fully grown.............check out his site.

Ok, will pot down...
when you say your violet will need a "ring" do you mean that this is what you do for violets whose leaves curve downwards, sort of trying to hug the pot?

Rings are for all avs........come in all sizes...........I will show you what they look like.........

I can't find a picture but they are in the Cape Cod Catalog........I have loaned mine out but am going to get them back.........in the meantime, just use a small desert styrofoam plate.......just cut through to the middle and cut a little bitty circle.......and place between the plant leaves and the pot. It really hurts the leaves to lean on pots......

Good luck.....if I could hyperlink the catalog I would........but you have to email them.....if you send me your home email address in a dmail, I will send the catalog to you so you can see the green ones I am talking about...........

Woo Hoo! The one leaf I was most desperate to see root and produce, Mac's Carnival Clown, is showing babies! I got two leaves but one didn't make it, and the second one didn't look so hot when I potted it up....but it pulled through. A nice bright sunny spot in a not so great day!

here is the actual plant, from the DG Plant Files...http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/164646/

Gail, I will send you my home email address for that catalog - thanks I really appreciate it!

That's a pretty one. I have a leaf down also and I sure hope it makes it.
