My babies

Medford, NJ

Thought I would share some pics of my little plants, and some of my rooting leaves. Some of them came from the AV show, some I had, and some came from the extraordinary people I have met here and on another forum. Those plants mean the most. Hopefully all my little leaves will make it and I will be able to do the same for someone someday.

Thanks sally, but I can't take too much credit for that, the senders are the ones that grew them! I am just hoping I can keep them as pretty.

Your av babies are so pretty. The furbabies are darling!

I love "Lillian in Lace"! That mosaic variegation is my favorite!

3 of my 4 fur kids... This was taken before the arrival of our latest, but the chihuahua and the new one (blue heeler) don't get along AT ALL yet, so I don't see any chance of a pic of the 4 of them together any time soon. LOL

This little angel belongs to my daughter. She's the Chihuahua in the picture above. In case you can't tell, she loves that toy and doesn't really like to share! LOL She's not nearly as mean as she looks, she's just really serious that I can't play with that toy. ;o)

Raingazer, that pic with the chi showing her teeth is hilarious, especially when you look at the toy, which is also "all teeth". She is really pretty, I haven't seen too many chihuahuas with a brindle coat.

My one chi Oobi is a little cranky when there is too much commotion going on, and he gets some attitude...but he is a good boy, and seems to get along with most of the dogs he has met. Hopefully your daughter's dog and the heeler will work it out, they usually do. What kind of dogs are the others, by the way? They look like shepherds, but they are smaller?

Bonnie, yours are precious! I did a pet portrait for an older couple whose dog looked just like Jake, it was hard to get all that fur looking perfect...the husband loved the first version, but the wife was very picky and kept asking me to change things. You'd think it was a portrait of the president I was doing! But, she loved the dog and wanted it to look a certain way and I have to admit in the end after all "her" changes, it was a better painting.

Here are Pep and Oobi together (hope I didn't already post this photo and DON'T look at the weeds!!)

too cute, all these animals are adorable.

I love all of the doggies.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Me too! I also love kitties, but my DH doesn't care for most of them.

Awww, Bonnie, both of yours are precious! Sugar Baby reminds me of a Yorkie my husband and I had just after we got married. I sure loved that dog!

jmp, isn't she too funny?! She gets ill with the rest of us sometimes, but she loves my daughter more than I can express. She's not full-blooded Chihuahua, but I don't know what else she's mixed with. We got her from the shelter when she was about a year old (that was about 5 years ago), and their best guess was mostly Chihuahua. I'm not even sure what small-breed dog is brindle colored like that to even try to figure out what else she could be.

The funny thing is, I'm actually afraid of Chihuahuas. LOL My grandmother's friend had several when I was a child, and those dogs would bite. They weren't playing. If you got too close, you were bitten before you knew what happened to you. I've never gotten over that fear, but my daughter insisted that this was the dog for her. I was mortified. LOL But she's done pretty well by me. Still, though, if I had to pick one of our four that I'm most afraid of, it would be her. LOL Yours look so sweet though! Nothing like the ones that belonged to my grandma's friend. You could tell they were evil from a mile away! LOL I think I could try to handle being around ones that look as sweet as yours!

My two big girls are Belgian Malinois. They are Belgian Shepherds, smaller than Germans. Mine weigh about 60 lbs each, but that's because they're old, fat and lazy. Girls should weigh closer to about 50 lbs, and they did when they were younger. Huge lap dogs, they are! Sweetest dogs ever! When we decided to get a dog back in 2000, I didn't want a Mal because they are frequently used as police dogs and all you ever see them doing is baring their teeth, barking and growling at some delinquent. I was afraid to have them around our young kids. My husband convinced me if we got a puppy and didn't raise it as a police dog, it would be fine. Boy, was he right! They are just wonderful with the kids! I will always have at least one Mal, no matter what!

Rain, your daughter's chi could have a little terrier of some sort thrown in a few generations back. My vet told me Oobi, the one on the right in the pic of both of them on the patio, was the same, probably some terrier mixed in. However, someone who is a chi expert told me that he is likely all chihuahua. Not all chi's are very small, they can and do weigh up to 10 lbs. (Oobi is about 8lbs) The only thing on yours that makes me think there might be something else mixed in are her ears, most chi's have those big perky "satellite dish" ears. My BF has a chi/jack russell mix whose ears look like your daughter's dog's ears, but then so do the ears on alot of terriers....yours does have the round bulgey eyes and the chihuahua "smile" (ha ha..) So maybe she has some Boston terrier in her, they come in brindle colors. But, just because I've never seen a brindle chi does not mean they don't exist. From what I have heard, chi's come in all colors, maybe brindle too. Oh well, does it really matter? I don't care about pedigree. I love all dogs. For now, with my busy life, school, where I live, small dogs are better. What I really want is a german shep and a greyhound, but mutts are fine too. Never met a dog I didn't like! Chi's can be grouchy, but it all depends on how they were raised. Oobi is very sweet, but has his limits with kids and too much excitement. But he is a loving little guy, kind of a sadness about him, I think it is left over from his horrible early years and his time at the shelter. He also has seizures, but not too many and not too bad.

My little Pep is so sweet and docile, not a mean bone in his wittle body. You'd love him. Poor baby, as of 10am this morning he was officially separated from his testicles, now he is probably recovering from the surgery. Gotta pick him up at five. Hope he doesn't blame me for the loss of his manhood.

Your Belgian Shepherds are awesome! I don't think I have ever come across one. I wonder if there are any rescues in my area, I should have my brother check them out, especially if he can find one that was raised with kids,.

My daughter's Chihuahua, Molly, is the grumpiest when it's time to eat. Apparently she was starved by the people who originally had her because you just can't get around her when she has food. And we can't just feed her from a bowl, we have to spread the food around on the floor or she eats too fast and chokes. We talked to the vet about it a few months after we got her and he said she might always do that, depending on just how poorly she was treated. That even though we feed her plenty and she knows it, it's "burned" in her mind that she better protect her food and eat it while she can. It's pitiful. :o( She's got a good home here, though.

The Mal on the left in the picture above we got through a rescue group. She was a year and a half old and we were her 5th family. She was scheduled to be put to sleep and we were asked to foster her. I told them I wouldn't foster her, I'd just take her and they were even happier with that! She is, without a doubt, the best dog we have now and that I have EVER had. LOVES our kids, is a "surrogate mom" to any puppies or small dogs that filter through here, just all around a wonderful dog! She was supposed to be a police dog, but was too hard-headed for that, then was kept in an apartment, turned loose around goats and horses, and all these people wondered why she kept getting into trouble! Good grief! Anyway, she's spoiled rotten and lives the life of a queen here! LOL

jmp24, it looks like your baby plants are well on their way! It won't be long until they are full of blooms! I had to get in on this one. The doggies are soooo cute! I have been wanting a Yorkie but Aspen takes up my time. I couldn't imagine trying to groom 2 every day. Here is my baby for everyone to see. He is 4 and we just gave him a summer cut for the first time (I cried). This was taken before his haircut.

Aspen, what a beautiful dog! That is a great photo as well. I am sure taking care of that fur is alot of work. My mom gets her long haired doxie a haircut every summer too...I think the dog really appreciates it!

By the way everyone ---- SUCCESS!!! My Funambole leaf has a teeny weeny little baby, my first one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am so excited, they were first planted on I think May 17, so that is not too long - 5 weeks from planting to babies? Yesterday I started snipping off the top third of alot of the leaves that look like they are growing too big, hoping maybe that will push them to do something on the other end. But I am so happy about Funambole, what a great feeling!

Ah well, just had to share my excitement. Back to my poetry term paper. Blaaaaahhhh...

Aspen is beautiful! I'm 2 years post Phoebe--I am really missing having a little friend. How about a pic of of aspen in her/his new do?

jmp--congrats on your funamble baby! Don't you just love cute little mouse ears?!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Aspen says "thank you so much"! So sorry you lost Phoebe :( I truly don't know what we would do without him. He goes everywhere with us and he is more of a child than a pet. He has really been there for me thru tough times! Wow, now we both know how we came up with our screen names :) Here is his new do. I left some on his ears and I left his tail long. I agree with jmp24...he has so much more energy and I know he feels better! Now I feel bad for not cutting him sooner. You can move those pillows and he will somehow move them right back SPOILED!!!!! (But so loved)

Cute! Phoebe always used to perk up after a trim too!

Well, instead of having my baby plants under different lights on every bit of counter space in the kitchen, I hung one big shoplight to put all of them under. All by myself, too, with no help from any man. I am so proud. Not that I didn't think I was capable, it is just that I would rather get someone else to do the "work"...

It came with chains, so I can raise and lower it if I have to...the rule is 6 to 8" for mini's, right? It is just one fixture, though I am thinking now I could have used two, hung side by side....I got two different bulbs, one cool, one warm. Guess I will have switch the plants from different sides every few weeks, because they will be gettting warm light on one side, cool on the other. One thing I find kind of interesting, the leaves I am rooting are starting to show some signs of babies - but only the leaves I have in natural light (I have a table in front of a sliding glass door full of AV's too) I wonder why that is? They are probably getting more light under the flourescents than they are in the window.

Still getting a cart made, figure to have that together by September at the latest. Going to need it when all the plants come indoors in the fall.

They certainly look happy where they are! Good going on getting the lights hooked up!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Nice work!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Very nice ! ^_^ One cool, one warm is a great combo. The first 4 inches of each end is the very low light area (assuming they are 48 inch tubes),so you may want to move plants around a little as you water.

Medford, NJ

Oh, Lynn - thanks! I didn't know that...but now that you say it, it does look a little dimmer at the ends.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Your welcome.I didn't know it either until I read a light chart in an AVSA magazine.

Medford, NJ

I definitely should have put in two lights. (((sigh))) There is just never as much room as you think - and you know that not getting any more plants is not the answer!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I thought that all shop light fixtures came with two bulbs to place in them.........NO?

If you use 4 bulbs and 2 fixtures, better be careful about burning your plants? someone else say?

Medford, NJ

Gail, my fixture came with NO bulbs, I had to buy them separately. It takes 2 bulbs. I was thinking of putting in another fixture so that I would have more lit up space to add more plants, not another fixture so that the plants already in place would have more light.

It seems to me that the one fixture only provides good light in the space directly under it, and not too far beyond that. I am wondering if I should move it back up a few inches, to maybe scatter the light a little better. Right now it is about 6 to 8" above the plants, most of which are minis or leaves.

What are the first signs of two much light? I am seeing some darker, bronzey coloration on some leaves where I hadn't noticed it before - but am wondering if that is a benefit of more light, not a symptom of too much.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i bought performance shop lights plus from home depot, they are a little different in the bulbs are not right next to each other, they are space a few inches apart which i think gives you more growing room. they seem to work very well. plus i use t8 bulbs & they really made a difference. the problems with to much light will be bunched centers on violets, they also become brittle.sun burned leaves also & very light foliage, like bleaching. hope this helps.
bonnie

Medford, NJ

Bonnie, when you say "sunburned" I am thinking of the bleached look my hoyas get if burned....and I am assuming that the bronzey tinge is ok? Possibly normal coloration for appropriate light?

Are T8 bulbs stronger or weaker? I believe mine are T12

I will have to look for the HD performance lights when I get the
shelves for my plant cart,

Medford, NJ

Ok, I have read about it, but it seems there are alot of different opinions so I am going to ask you all what you do.
My first tray of leaves, I potted them up in mid May, all have babies now, some still tiny, some the leaves are the size of green peas. They are still covered in the above mentioned cake pans. When do I uncover? A few of them I removed from the pans as an experiment, and just have them out in the fresh air, and they are doing fine. Most are minis and semi minis, if that makes any difference. I know they will dry out quicker uncovered but that's ok, I am home to make sure they get watered.

Thanks for your opinions !
