Another of this juvenile Great Blue Heron.

Not very clear, but we saw lots of the Yellow-headed Blackbirds in the tullies. They really do sound like a loud, squeaky door hinge too.

Great pix of the Herons, Duc. I'd like to take the boat out this weekend and hunt for those nests. What great finding!

Gee...all I have is a bad photo of a Purple Martin from down on the beach...

Speaking of Great Blues...I don't think I had ever seen one laying on the ground before this one.

Lily I think our Great Blues have finished nesting for the season.

Arrrggg! Leave it up to me to wait until too late in the season. Thanks for the head up, Frank.

Lily you may still have some on the nest. You are a little further north than me...LOL...You Yankee. Are you north of hyw US82?

The Turtle Dove gets its name from the "turr, turr" sound it makes.

I'm always lurking, but hardly posting as I never get any usual birds here. Finches, chickadees, cardinals, grackles, cowbirds, goldfinch, mourning dove.
Loving the pics, though.

Margaret, I was checking out the area where you live and looks like you have the PERFECT weather of somewhere I'd like to live.

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

All of our Great Blue nest are hidden on the old river channels. The ones way back in the trees that you would have to walk in get to. Or in areas that are only inches deep in water but too grown up with vegatation to get a boat to them. That is why I was so excited to find that one just off pipeline road. They are much more thoughtful in finding nest sites than egrets.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

Thanks, resin. It's great to be able to depend on the knowledge of this forum.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Our herons have lots of 40' plus very old Oak trees to nest in and it's always easy to spot the nests, but you need a powerful lens to get a decent photo. Frank, I've never seen one on the ground like that, great capture!! Lily, hope you'll go out and try to locate one, they're such fun to watch the families looking down at you.

Nanny, I've told you before that you're always getting wonderful pictures!

Flower, there has never been a "usual" bird posted here! I love seeing all of them.

Fresno, CA(Zone 9b)

AWESOME pics, folks! WOW! I often lurk about to see the different birds you find. Your pics are a continuous reminder of the variety of micro-climates with which we are blessed. Some of the new ones for me? Yellow headed Blackbird! there's no missing that guy in a crowd! The Australasian whatsit! look at that wingspan! The striped-neck Great Blue Heron! certainly isn't fair that such a tall/thin thing wears clothes to accentuate that profile!! Feather mites?! eeeeewww, sad. Least Bittern? Is there a Most Bittern?!! Corella's and Galeh's? parrots? Quite the daring crown, aren't they? neighborhood cats play such games around here. Burd Fotos, that little Downy WP is so cute. Methodical, those pics with the wire are amazing shots, with the juxtaposition between the feathers and bark/wire.

So much to learn, so little time left . . . .

Thanks for teaching,
Linda

Quoting:
Least Bittern? Is there a Most Bittern?!!

;-))

No, but there is a Great Bittern (occurs in Europe & Asia)

Great pics everyone!

Dave and Duc, Yes the feathers will grow back. I can only imagine how annoying it must feel to have feather mites all over your head.

Outstanding photos Frank!! Looks like she could use a cooling bath from all that cooking! Must have a good number of babies in that nest or was she just stocking up?

Norman, OK

Call me a slacker. I haven't been taking many bird photos recently. I see them, just haven't had the camera running. But I can always visit here for bird pics. Photos are great-- as usual.

I've posted some nature photos public on my Flickr account. If anyone wants to visit, they are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/reddirtpics/ It's a good site, you can look at lots of other great pics if you get bored with mine. For those not familiar, it's a Yahoo site, you can set up a group of family or friends and share photos, or leave them public.

Did get one of this Killdeer down by the ponds this morning. Also found the Scissor-tails' nest, but couldn't see anything in it.

Nice shots on this thread and I just love all the baby pictures...too cute and smile makers for sure.

Not much picture taking here with the storms, excessive heat and trillions of weeds that taunt me daily!! I did sit on the front porch late yesterday and got a few shots of the male American Goldfinch. I really liked the background color which is a container of red petunias.

Oh my, Dellrose, those are wonderful. Each of them is special in its own way. That red background; the pose in the second; the uniqueness of the posture in the third.

Amazing photography.
