wow huggergirl - amazing how much you've been able to do gardening on that slope. My backyard slopes also although not near as much and sometimes when I'm digging through clay while trying not to fall down, I feel like I'm doing an exercise in "extreme gardening" lol. Yours is very pretty!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

peonrosegirl,I have fallen down more than once,Iam a lot more careful now, but walking up and down this hill for 27 yrs helps keep me in shape for sure. you are right about the extreme exercise, like when i fertilize with the push broadcast spreader, that is a challenge .!!!

I guess the grass is always greener, LOL, I'd love some slope. (And maybe I'd be in better shape if forced to walk up and down it!) Part of the bed across the creek.

Everyone's gardens are so wonderful! My gardens aren't really at peak until late July I'd guess. So I'm holding out on pics. : )

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

They'll be welcome in late July, because mine are burning up by that time! A view from the back mid-May, when we'd gotten 7.5 inches of rain, and our french drain was stopped up.

Huggergirl, I'm laughing because your story made me think of the time I got overly ambitious loading up my little wagon with dirt etc to take down the hill. The wagon got away from me and speeded up so much that me and the wagon and the dirt went rolling down the hill lol! I'm pretty sure none of the neighbors got to see that one so I can laugh about it now!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

peonyrosegirl,OMG,you brought back memories,of loads of field stone getting dumped, and loads of dirt, beause Id fill it to the top and wonder woman it down the hill,Iam 50 now and I keep telling the dh Iam not wonder woman anymore, thnak god we are pretty much done moving any large amounts of anything,we used 32 ton of field stone to terrace our hill, who knows how many ton of dirt, soo glad thats over !!!

Lala_Jane,
By edging, do you mean the concrete curbing? It's just a poured concrete curbing. I love it! Have it poured once and it's there forever. No fuss, no muss! lOL Thank you for the kind words on my garden. ;o)

gemini_sage,
Beautiful shot on the June 21 post! And thank you. I may have to try some of those foxtail lilies. They are stunning! Your lilies are very pretty too.

KaylyRed,
Your new garden is very pretty and will get better and better. It is definitely photo ready. ;o)

peonyrosegirl,
LOVE your area by the street with the purples and pink! Excellent!

huggergirl,
Very nice place you have there. I really like the look of the area with the steps leading down to the house and the area to the right of your deck project. I can't imagine working with a slope like that. It has to be a real challenge and you have made it look wonderful!

Irwells50,
Beautiful home you have! Love the picture of the front yard! Your gardens are gorgeous!

herbalbetty,
Beautiful garden and home! And I LOVE the treehouses!!

And here are a couple shots from today of my same curvy bed in the front yard. They are changing daily. The lilies are slowing down and the daylilies are starting to pick up. But right now there are some of both blooming with a few of this and that in the mix. I'll try to post some pictures of my island bed garden and the back yard garden too.

Here's a picture of a portion of my California small-as-a-postage-stamp-sized front yard (standing at the edge of my neighbor's yard) looking toward the front door. That's my favorite argryranthemum ("Silver Lady") in the foreground.

Here's another of the same bed showing the in-ground water feature/bubbler, near the front door.

My rudebeckia "Herbstonne" and tall verbena are doing nicely despite all the reflected heat in a small south-facing bed bordering the sidewalk, street and driveway.

huggergirl, you've done a fantastic job with that slope! Very pretty!

Irwells, lovely gardens!

surfcity, pretty combinations of plants! I love seeing the plants California gardeners use, many are unusual to those of us in temperate zones.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Irwells, nice gardens, love the water feature.looks like you have a nice mix of sun and shade, and flat ground !!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

sherrygirl, your gardens are really neat and tidy, not to mention beautiful, great work !!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Lala_Jane,Your beds are huge, I love that ,room to roam, ahh Iam jealous of that wide open space.Nice job

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

gemini_sage , your gardens look great too, looks big and inviting,is it slightly rolling, you are in hill country arent you?

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

KaylyRed,Your new bed is doing wonderful ,isnt it amazing how fast it went from somthing is buried to a beautiful flower garden !!!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, huggergirl! Yep, I'm right in the middle of the gently rolling hills of the Bluegrass region. I used to live in the foothills of the Appalachians, about an hour east of here- now that was hill country, LOL.

Where is Columbia City, Huggergirl? We just got back from Bloomington last week. And you're right, it's pretty flat.

I'm very jealous of your concrete edging, Sherrygirl, although I guess the bermuda would get over or under that as well. I really like the contrast of the formal edging and lawn, and the cottage-ey (?) flowers.

Gemini-sage, your gardens are beautiful. If you get enough perennials growing close enough together do they finally choke out the weeds?

I still have a long way to go to get a cottage effect.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I love the variety in yours, surfcity, especially the grasses. I had some Mexican feather grass but it bit the dust after a couple of years. It may have gotten too much water.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Irwells ,we are 3hrs north of bloomington ,we are 20 miles west of Ft. Wayne In. up towards the NE corner of the state, yes parts of Indiana are rather flat,we live in a nice rolling hill area,10 mi. south is flaattt !!!Now did you think brown county was flat?(Bloomington)

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Huggergirl those pictures are all of one bed. I really have way more than I can take care of but I do so enjoy it and just try to turn a blind eye to everything I can't get to. I'll have to get around and take some pictures of the rest of the *cough* estate *cough* soon.
;-)

BTW we are distant neighbors. I'm about 30 miles EAST of Ft. Wayne.

(Lynn) Paris, TX(Zone 7b)

I meant Paris was flat! Bloomington (she's in Monroe Co) is beautiful rolling hills.

Crown Point, IN(Zone 5a)

Sherrygirl - thanks for the encouragement and I love your pics!

Crown Point, IN(Zone 5a)

Huggergirl - so funny. I'm glad to know someone out there is as crazy for plants as I am - trying to lug everything up and down a hill themselves!! And it's good to hear that it gets a little easier (this years project was digging twelve inches of clay out of two big beds and then bringing a truckload of dirt down the hill one wheelbarrow at a time to fill it in) I can't wait!!!
Maybe I'll post pictures of those two beds when they fill in - I've got high hopes lol!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

peonyrosegirl,OMG,more memories, digging out good ole clay, hauling dirt,i used 5 gal. buckets too.see the old wheel barrow full of petunias, thats the one I used, now that I think about it boy she hauled over 32 ton of stone and dirt,oh my memories, soo glad I have only smaller projects now.good luck on your new beds,we will be waiting on progress pix!!!!

Lala_Jane,I was wondering where in ohio,we ride our harleys over to celina, grand lake.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Irwells, this is my 3rd growing season here, and the weeds get a little easier to contend with each year. Still plenty of them in there, but the perennials have gotten big and crowded enough that I can't see most of them till I get close up.

This year I'm working hard to get all the beds mulched well with lawn clippings. It makes a huge difference in the weeds and moisture retention, and unlike hard wood mulches, it decomposes at a rate that allows for reseeding of desirable plants.
