Show me your containers

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

This is the second "Ice" container. The 'silver' plant in front is a really neat succulent which was purchased in April and also suffered while we were gone. I trimmed it way back and again, hope it will recover as well.

I've tried twice to take a good picture of this one - tough because of the lighting. This is my 'Fire' themed container. Two different Alternantheras planted on either side suffered as well as the Begonia 'Bonfire' planted in the front. I'm hoping they'll respond to finally being planted in good soil and fertilized and will trail over the edges. Tough to see but there's Hardy Jasmine (lacy gold foliage) which will hopefully climb the vertical iron "tripod" in the center of the dark Canna. The plant on the right in the white container used to be over 4' high but developed serious bug problems while overwintering inside and had to be cut way back. A new pot, soil and fertilizer should bring it back to life!

Talking about containers......and Begonias....
This is a picture of Begonia HB from my trip to Latvia. It hung in the central courtyard of the apartment building we stayed in.
Anyone know the name of this begonia?

I don't know what that begonia is, Gita, but it sure is pretty.

Nice arrangements in your pots, Debbie.

Beautiful pics to all. I love that sea of astilbe.
Gita, the Edelweiss is lovely, isn't that in the "Sound of Music", and the Austrian national anthem? This garden was also in the movie. Ric

wow that's nice

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ric--

the end of that movie always made me cry--where they are all performing on the stage and then they srtarted to sing "Edelweiss, Edelweiss" and the people in the audience sang along--much to the chagrin of those staid German military men.
And the father--on the stage--choked up singing it and could not finish......
Great movie--a classic....ahhhhhhhh.................

I don't think it is the Austrian National anthem...just a lovely song about a lovely flower....
I believe these grow up in the Alps...

edited to say--when I have more time--I should add some of my flower photos to the PF....

rcn, Love the "Ice combos", I didn't pick up a persion shield plant yet this year. There were a couple of plants I had last year that I really liked but didn't get this year. The varigated Lanata and the persion Shield were on the list but just didn't get any home, I still may if I find some. I wanted to ask about the Tradescantia can you give me an ID on it. I was looking over some pics, but the ones I saw that looked like mine are not rated for my Zone and I think the ones I have maybe hardy in my Zone 6.
Gita, My brug is flowering. Will post a pic later.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly--

You would have wasted your time looking for the Persian Shield this year. NONE were available anywhere....I asked at the Md Flower and Foliage (*wholesale Greenhouse) why they did not have any this year (they always have scads!) and he said that some kind of blight had hit them and no one was growing them at all.
It is one of my favorite container plants.....LOVE those purples and silver....

Here's one of my containers from a couple of years ago with it in it--and that was only ONE plant!

Have a Happy and safe 4th of July everyone!

Holly, almost forgot to get the ID on the Tradescantia! I'm pretty sure it's this one, Tradescantia sillamontana http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/31747/. Not sure the hardiness rating is right in PF, I've seen some reports of being hardy to Zone 8 although when we picked it up at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria this spring, they told us several people had luck growing it in their landscapes and I'm pretty sure they're rated Zone 7? I never grabbed any Persian Shield this year either and it would have looked great in one of my "Ice" containers! Ruby was so sweet and sent me two pots of it last year and unfortunately I wasn't able to keep it going through the winter :(

Gita, after seeing your photo of that glorious Begonia basket, I spent way too much time looking for an ID but no luck :( If I ever do find it I'll let you know because I would LOVE to have one!

I'll try to remember to get a few photos of our new containers of succulents. Rick beat me to it and got them potted up before I got a chance - not exactly the combinations I would have made but at least they got planted!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks rcn, Just don't understand you forgetting about checking that out for me, not like you have anything else going on right now. ;-} LOL The person that brought it to the wreath making said that he picked it up at Longwood. I think a piece must have fallen into his pocket. He also said he had it growing everywhere, so I assumed that he meant in the yard not just the GH. I'll check out that link Thanks so much.

Good morning, Holly ask me to post this and say, Thank You, Gita

Gita, they sell edelweiss plants at the nursery in Front Royal. Would you like me to get you some next time I'm there? They're only $1.19 each.

Onewish, I like your geranium in that planter. Is it a Martha Washington geranium? Chris, that July 4th planter is great!

Holly, do you have any purple heart tradescantia? They had them on the clearance table at Walmart for a buck or two.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

rcn---That Begonia might just be a variety we don't have here. I saw many flowers in Latvia (especially wild flowers) that I had no idea about....

Ric--I am glad it is blooming for you. It will grow and thrive....Throw it in the basement for the winter and (almost) forget it. Haul it out next Spring--and off it goes!
My Brugs are "resting" right now after all that blooming....Gathering strength for the next one. I better go outside and feed them something.....

Hart--No thanks on the Edelweis. I don't think it will do well in all this heat here....

Just posted new pics of my amazing Lily on the July pictures Post....It is beyond awesome!!!!!

That lily is beautiful, Gita.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Gita, you're right, every site I found which had anything similar to that Begonia were all European sites :) Beautiful Lily!

Holly (Ric), I am so envious of your Brug! Even when I did finally get mine to flower it was almost September before I saw flowers!

Oops, onewish, I forgot, I love that Geranium too! Like Hart, I'm curious too, is it a Martha Washington Geranium?

And a big pot with Penta and Lantana next to one of my whiskey barrel ponds-this one has a night blooming, fragrant waterlily - but it has not bloomed yet - probably waiting until we go on vacation! It does have 2 pretty fish that seem to be ok with the warm still water...

Love your hypertufa! The "stream" with the stones, blue marbles and blue fish is great. Is that Angelina sedum?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

rcn...

Do not fret that you only got blooms from your Brug until September!
So did I--on my huge "Maya" last year--it was actually end of October. When i cut it back and dug it up--EVERY stem tip was loaded with buds. I had to sacrifice them all.

Do not worry! Just put it in your basement for the winter and next year it will bloom a lot better for you.

In case you did not see me post this picture--here is a flush to beat all flushes on the Maya I clipped back to bare bones--leaving ALl the "Y"'s in place....

It totally dazzled me this Spring!!!!! Look!

Of course--this is the Mama plant--about 3 years old now. NOT a cutting just starting out.
But--from small acorns mighty oaks grow.......:o)

Another close up...showing why this may also be called "Peaches and Cream"....

Hart, No the only Trans I have is the one in my sedum wreath and I will probably pull that out and repot it somewhere else.
rcn this is the first time I've had a brug flower this early, Thanks Gita.
I don't have a basement but Josh does.
yvgfjayne, That is a really cute planter, love it and the basket.

WOW! Your macro of the Lantana looks like something from outer space!

i LOVE Penta! So tolerant of heat and dryness.....Always in full bloom. Just have to keep removing the old bloom clusters to keep it that way. Mine bloomed all the way until frost last fall.....

Here's a picture from last fall.

jayne- well shot.
I got my mom a pink Pentas like that for a pot on her patio, along with purple petunias and white annual Vinca. She really liked the Pentas and had never seen it before (yeah mom, you gotta get out of the walmart once in a while LOL)
Lowes had NO deals going yet today! boo.

Hummingbirds???
One of the things I've noticed here in my part of Mid-Atlantinc - where are the hummingbirds? My friends who also keep feeders aren't seeing them either. Had one comming about a month ago for just a day or two - have not seen a single one since! Too wet and cold this year? Anyone else noticing this?

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

Jayne, they flew up my way! >grin< I have some, at least a pair, can't get them all together for a count.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

We have them but not near as many as last year for some reason and I noticed that they aren't up at my friends house either and she had tons of them.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I think there are 3 or 4 visiting me all day.. so hard to tell the difference between them

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Can't really see the hanging pot very well.
