the ridge would be traced to the ridged hounds that are indigenous to the southern area of central Africa.
This is the same hound the Boors crossed with the English Mastiff - Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
However - Amber, my yellow lab took a fancy to them, and came up with an Italianate (wavy) version of the ridge. Looks like 3-D ricrac when her hackles are up.
Ruby:
Introducing Summer & her acre of milk & honey ...
Aw, pretty Ruby ... so did a lot of mutts cross the ocean from Africa to Costa Rica?
My dog Koka (Kokapelli) is an American Indian dog - with a lot coyote & wolf mixed in. She was named by the Blackfoot Indian I got her from. She is a descendant of the Chinook tribe dogs and whatever dogs the indians brought with them from Russia through Alaska. She was trained as an Angel Guide for disabled children but failed the final test which was remaining calm in airports. More info on www.indiandogs.com. Koka is in the third photo - she's the one lying down. I love her.
What beautiful weather today. A good day to work in the garden!
LOL, Judi! Is anyone calm in an airport?
Koka is striking.
5 days & counting ...While it's nice to have had almost 4 months to prepare, I am SO ready to be through with this weird, emotional, much-heavy-lifting TRANSITION!
It will cool down to the 80's by the weekend - or so they say.
How does snow sound right now?
Shouldnt be hard crossing the pass They say the snow level is at 14000 feet
When I woke this morning in my 2nd-floor bedroom with low windows, it was really cool still ... and looking out all I could see was spruce branches & white sky. It reminded me of snowy winter mornings & how beautiful they can be, and the pleasures of flannel pajamas & sheepskin slippers.
But in reality, when it's snowy here, I'm housebound. It's not like I'm going to ski the cornfields.
Of course, no matter how unsuitable a place is for one particular person, there are always things you will miss.
I should be in bed but it's too hot. So I found this thread. Summer, the house looks divine! You are going to so love it! I hope you find a suitable room mate who won't cramp your style. Maybe even someone to have fun with! If you come up through Lakewood (which you can't really avoid if you are coming north in I-5) I hope you'll stop and say howdy. I know that Pony is very close to where I live, and I am literally 5 minutes from the highway. I am also just down the street from a quilting store called The Quilted Dragon. They sell a nice assortment of fabrics, mostly of the Asian variety, beads, patterns, buttons, etc. Here's their website:
http://www.shiboridragon.com/
You and Pony could come have iced tea by the pond if you want to break up your trip. I'll be gone to the gulf islands in the middle of august, but I'll be home about a week before the roundup.
I'm scared of Pony. I'll bet she has tattoos & will push me into the pond.
But I will chance a visit anyhow!
I only have seven tattoos! thpppppppppt! :p
I tellya, if it's this hot, I will push you into the pond so I can jump in to rescue you.
What kind of tats pony? I'd join you in the pond too. Up to 93 already.
I've never even DATED someone with a tattoo, much less gotten one myself.
I love tattoos. I'd have more if I could afford them. Already have the design of the next one in my head if the money ever comes available.
Sally, I have a starfish, a tiger, a TARDIS (the blue police box from Doctor Who- my hubby has the same tattoo... ah, geek love.) a phoenix, a longhorn skull with a snake, a dragon and a bad idea. (my first husband's name with an ankh and vines)
Ha ha! OK, I know that last one isn't funny, but that was always my worry, that I'd pick out something that looked ultracool to me & then wake up in the morning to realize that it was trite & awful and forever after the world would see evidence of my bad taste & poor judgment.
LOL Never do names!! I would like all except the longhorn. Love the TARDIS idea(I didn't need a def. for that one). My son has an iguana climbing up his arm. It's a little big for my taste, but it is very nicely done. It's a beautiful beastie!! If I wasn't afraid of all my allergies, I'd probably be the small butterfly type. LOL
Yep- never get names. Wish I'd heeded that way back when, but oh well.
Some of mine I would do different if I had it to do over again, but they're a part of me, and I love them even if they aren't perfect.
Tonight I'm feeling like I'm just not going to make it to Oregon, much less into that pond. Two more days & so much emotional turmoil & SO MUCH PACKING.
I broke down & called my brother tonight, in tears ... he doesn't hear his big sister sobbing very often!
Aw geez... :( Hang in there, Sweety. It'll all be worth it when you get to your beautiful new home.
Summer I drove through Rose Lodge yesterday on my way to the beach, and when it was 107 in Portland it was 73 there. Very pleasant!

Summer, it is not easy to uproot & move. Carrying the burden alone is a rough ride. Please know that we are looking forward to your arrival - there's lots of empathy here regarding this move. If there's anything we can do to help smooth the way, please post - Ok???
Summer I also had to move alone a few times, and it is very stressful as I'm sure you know. But I told myself that I can do this, and when I was finished, I realized I could do anything. You are going through a major life change but you will be so pleased with yourself for making that change, and you will LOVE LOVE the PNW. I lived for many years in Southern California, then when my youngest kid was in his second year at Berkeley I moved to San Francisco for an incredible job opportunity. A year and a half ago I moved to Portland because I have loved this city and the PNW and now I can't imagine living elsewhere. You sound like a spirited and energetic person, and you will settle in quickly and feel like you belong here. And then we'll all say " welcome home Summer".
Summer, I agree with Katye! Moving yourself across the country is a big deal, and just getting ready for a short vacation throws me into a panic frenzy, so I can imagine what you are going through! We are all totally behind you and thrilled to welcome you into our part of the world....if you need support or just want to vent, we are here!
Judi, We crossed in posting, but AMEN!
It'll be fine once you get on the road. This is the hardest time, getting ready to go. You're almost there . . .
Chin up, summer! You will make it just fine! Leaving a home behind is worth a few tears. After all, what would it say about how much your home means to you if you left without even a sniff! Not to mention the BF who may or may not be following you. It's all well and good to be independent minded and a free spirit and all of that, but we free spirits sometimes like having someone around to keep us grounded. Maybe we don't want to commit to them, but we like it that they are committed to us. You are leaping off into the void of trusting the universe to provide for you! If you didn't feel a little pain, I'd think you were really strange or emotionally stunted or something like that :)! We're all here holding the space for you.
Through the ups and downs of life the times of the most personal growth for me have been the down times. I always feel stronger and uplifted at the other end. And at the other end of your moving journey is Rose Lodge and the PNW!
Thank you all! Everyone was SO RIGHT!!! The trip went perfectly smoothly & we had a blast. I am now safely settled among a sea of boxes & so very very happy to be here.
I'm at a cyber cafe trying to set up the New Life so will check in later!
WooHoo! Welcome home! :D
Welcome to Oregon!!! Finally it is done!
Hooray and welcome!
Snatching your thread for a link to the roundup that you will hopefully be able to attend and meet your new friends here!
I am butting in everywhere right now to post the link to our final roundup plans so that there isn't a chance of anyone that wants to join us missing it!
Hope to see as many people as possible there! Should be a great time!

WOOHOO!!! Glad it went smoothly. Enjoy the unpacking in your new home and garden.
Welcome home summerkid. Have fun settling in.
Welcome summerkid, beautiful time of year to get here. Take pictures now so you'll now what's coming up next year.
I got here in winter and spring was one surprise after another. Fun, but I didn't know where I could plant new things.
It's good to hear you had a safe & uneventful journey.
You missed some very hot weather, Summer!
Get settled in & make yourself comfy...
Welcome Summerkid!
Wow. That was quick. Welcome, welcome. We're looking forward to hearing about your adventures. Have you thought about starting a blog (hint, hint)??
It was quick because my brother was RUTHLESS & kept rousting us out of our sleeping bags at 7 a.m.
On Tuesday we drove for SEVENTEEN HOURS! Got here around dawn; the kids (Wade's 2 boys & one daughter) were practically doing cartwheels, they were so thrilled with the creek & garden.
I will have Internet at the house on Monday so will probably be chatting nonstop after a week-plus of computer withdrawal. And I have every intention of getting unpacked in time to attend the Roundup. I have lots of mysterious plants to share. A gorgeous stand of white phlox is in full, fragrant bloom outside my front door.
