I really like the features that allow you to plug in your zone and it figures out your frost dates! Also by seeing it on "paper" then I can see that the required plant spacings will probably rule out very many cabbages or broccoli, which my family eats a lot of. As a newbie it is hard for me to mentally grasp the size requirements for certain plants.

It also allows for crop rotation and keeps you from planting the wrong things in the wrong places.

I'll probably end up subscribing. At least for the first year.
