I ordered a Royal Star magnolia, a Leonard Messel magnolia, a Julia Child rose and a Double Take Scarlet flowering quince. They all came in very high quality and in nice pots. The rose must have been very healthy because it dried out in the pot on my watch and lost all its leaves, but it bounced back! I thought the prices were good, but they are great considering the quality. I sound like a bot, but this is a real review! Too bad I can't add a photo.

I decided to try a couple new online nurseries to branch out from my handful of trusted ones, so this was one that interested me. Mainly because they send out huskier well-rooted plants in almost-quart pots. I ordered two varieties of garden phlox and 2 Frosted Elegance mangaves. The plants arrived in a timely manner...a couple of weeks I think...and were healthy and green. They were not plants that had been grown in plugs and then set into a larger pot to make them seem more mature. These plants filled the pot and the roots were deep.
However, because of how they were packed dirt was all over inside the box and some of the pots were half-emptied. I suggest they figure out a system to cover the base of the plant with paper or something, secured with a rubber band. It would save unnecessary irritation.
Pleased with the plants and the quality of them. Shipping costs seem fair enough, given today's realities. I would order from them again.

I recently ordered plants from Great Garden Plants for a memorial garden that I created with my daughter-in-law in memory of our 6 month old grandson, Buddy. We each have a "Buddy Garden" and wanted to add matching plants for his birthday and Christmas. I specifically chose Great Garden Plants because of their online selection and placed an order for two Pardon My Purple Bee Balm and two Candy Mountain Foxglove plants on July 11th, 2023.

While two of the plants thrived and brought us joy this spring, the other two, unfortunately, did not germinate. This was particularly disappointing given the sentimental significance of the garden. We look forward to seeing the plants bloom each year as a way to remember Buddy, and the missing plants left a gap in our plan.

Great Garden Plants boasts a wonderful selection, and their website makes it easy to find unique varieties. However, my experience with inconsistent plant viability has led me to reconsider them as my go-to source. I may need to return to my local nursery for future additions to our Buddy Gardens, where I can inspect the plants before purchase and ensure they meet my needs.

Overall, I would recommend Great Garden Plants with reservations. Their selection is impressive, but my experience highlights the risk of online plant purchases, especially for a project with a high sentimental value. If you choose to order from them, be prepared for the possibility of some plants not surviving shipment or failing to germinate.

I placed a small order with Great Garden Plants just to test the water. Firstly, they are located in Grand Haven, MI and I am in Northern Idaho. I always look to see the nursery's location prior to ordering and base my plant orders on how far and time of year the plants need to travel (distance and extreme temperatures can stress plants, some more than others). Currently the Midwest and our region are in a heatwave

I was EXTREMELY please with my order from Great Garden Plants. They were 3" pots with very healthy plants shipped in cardboard sleeves. On top of that they were snug in a plastic wrap that was attached to the pot so there was no chance of slippage. The plastic helped maintain the soil moisture, and it was obvious the plants had been watered prior to shipping. I'm ecstatic because they have a great selection at great prices. I'll definitely be ordering from them in the future.

First time plant order, first delivered one wrong plant, haven’t received a replacement - another was dead. Still waiting. Four others were listed as deer resistant, the deer enjoyed them first day out, when contacted GGP said it was a marketing error in their website listing and they would “correct that”. No offer to replace or refund plants, rather a coupon for $7 off my next order. Not happy with this experiment or their customer service.

I ordered 12 Thuja Green Giants and they were all at least 1 foot shorter than the advertised 3 feet. When I called them to let them know I was not happy that none of the 12 trees I had ordered were actually the advertised 3 feet, they said they measure the height of the tree from the bottom of the pot. Some of the trees I received were 1 foot tall. I have been an avid gardener for at least 20 years and this is a first for me. No where on their site do they define how they measure the height of their trees. I was only asking them to deliver what I paid for and the height of the tree they promised. They refunded 10% of my money. Whether they intended to deceive or not, this is still dishonest. They would do far better if they under promised and over delivered like any good business would. I feel ripped off and I am not happy. Bait and switch at its best. I cannot recommend Great Garden Plants.

When they arrived they looked very heathy and green but a lot smaller that the 24 I ordered in 2016. When I went to plant them I noticed from old photos that they were less than 1/2 the size as my 2016 order. These were $20 apiece and Home Depot has the size I bought in 2016 for 14.95 right,now...I guess I'm stuck waiting 2"years to get them to the size they advertised. I am very impressed by the quality of the plants and would like to share this with other gardeners.

I just received my 16 Thuja Green Giants about three days ago. As I was opening them I was surprised to see that one or two were shorter than advertised, and about 6 of them were not even close to being rooted into the ball enough. When I was removing them from the pot, I had to tip it upside down and be extremely careful in taking it out. The 6 that were not rooted in well enough were not attached at all to about half of the ball and will not stay standing up straight because they are so extremely weak. Very disappointed in the quality of the trees and I will not be ordering from them again. Buyers beware, I did get about 16 more prior to this from a local nursery and they were MUCH sturdier and higher in quality for the same price, only reason I got these online is because the local store had been out of stock for a while now.

Great Gardens - NEGATIVE - Plays fast and loose with zoning recommendations. Assumes no fault if plants fail to overwinter in a zone they deem hardy, even though other reputable nurseries do not.
Planted 25 Dwarf Pampas grass (purchased from Great Gardens) in the creation of a long hedge mixed with 25 Zebra Grass plants. Same environment-same soil conditions-same planting method-same everything. All plants did exceptionally well thru spring/summer/fall. Zebra grass came back heartily by mid-April and by mid-May, the Dwarf Pampas is obviously dead. This following a milder than usual zone 5 winter. I learned from local nurseries that dwarf pampas is not recommended for zone 5 (although early varieties years ago were hit and miss). I also reviewed other on-line plant distributors and found that they do not consider Dwarf Pampas as suitable for zone 5. (High Country for example) This was an elaborate purchase for someone of my means ($400 in dwarf pampas alone - I can't afford start over). I did not ask for a refund, but merely sought an agreement for replacing with an ornamental grass suitable for zone 5. Great Gardens responded by providing their 30 Day Guarantee Statement and denied any responsibility for inaccurate zoning recommendations, although I provided attachments stating that many nurseries "Contradict" the Great Plains guidance that dwarf pampas is hardy for zone 5.

I suppose it takes a lot longer to package them when such care is given to protecting the plants. I am sure glad they take the time to do it right! I will be ordering again! I ordered 5 one-gallon sized THUJAS in early summer and planted them in Southern California. That was my big mistake, considering the drought conditions here. This company's BIG MISTAKE was sending the Thujas too early, before sufficient root balls had formed. I emailed Great Garden Plants and they said they would extend my 'warranty' after seeing photos. I ordered 10 Thujas and a few other plants in my first order. The trees were very healthy, very big and packed very well. So I ordered a few more of them and some shrubs and plants. Second order was also very good. One Heuchera and one Salix looked like they may have suffered in transport. I emailed the company, they replied the same day. Mary said to give it a few days and to email or call if they don't perk up. I emailed back a week later to let them know the plants didn't die but didn't get any better. They responded the next day and let me know they were sending replacements. The replacements were in excellent condition and have really grown well. Till this day the two plants which were replaced have not died or grown. So I can't even say they were unhealthy or dead. Overall I'm very pleased with this company and would order again. My only suggestion to them is to list the prices for one plant instead of "as low as" price for multiple plants. Also, would be great if you can sort by price. It is hard to go through 20 pages of listings. I have made lots of purchases on other sites simply by sorting by price and seeing what was really cheap that day and buying "extras" for my garden based on what was on sale.

On April 18th, 2016, narina77 added the following:

Just to follow up- ALL my Thujas have grown and done well. The Salix which I wasn't sure was going to make it- has survived and grown rather well. I ordered 1 gallon Thujas from another company- and while they were in great shape and much cheaper- they were significantly smaller than the ones that you get at Great Garden Plants. If you're looking for true jumbo 1 gallon Thujas, I would say Great Garden Plants are a good choice for a larger start.

They told me that they look the same as young plants, and to wait for it to mature. It is not maestro as I ordered, it is matrona. They do not look the same and it is living, but it isn't the correct plant. They did not ask me for a picture or anything. They just told me that I was wrong and that was the end of it. So, the plants were healthy, but you may not get what you actually order and they do not care if you receive the correct item, so I can't give them a positive review.

In the past I have bought plants from Wayside Gardens, and Steambank who have graciously replaced merchandise. Indeed Wayside has a ONE YEAR guarantee! Placed an order for 2 roses of the same variety that were not available elsewhere. I think it took about a month to receive them, which was fine, however they were small and droopy, appearing to me as if they had been recently rooted from a large cutting. One survived and one did not, so I requested a replacement. They did ship that, and it was worse than the first. It died after about 2 days. I asked for another replacement as I was planning to plant one on each side of a window in front of my house. I have no other place to plant a climbing rose as I ordered about 30 roses this year from various companies and the rest are all planted and blooming (and I received most of them after the original shipment from Great Garden Plants). They responded that 1) They only issue a one time replacement and 2) they are out of that rose. Now I have an unhealthy rose that I don't need, and cannot propagate it myself due to it's current state. Also ordered 2 other roses from them last year, am awaiting a replacement for one that died. My success rate with roses from other companies has been 100% so pretty sure I'm not the problem. Will not use this company again.

Appears to be a very disreputable company. Placed order March 9th, 2008. Confirmation scheduled ship date as 4/21-4/28.
Charge to be placed when order is shipped. Order still not shipped 5/8 and charge has been posted to my account.
They do not respond to emails.
I wrote to cancel order and owner called Saturday 5/3. She offered me 20% discount to accept order and said it would be shipped right away. I agreed.
Order has still not been shipped. 5/8.
Once again no response to email.

Order of in stock items arrived as promised. plants were small , one dead and only 4 of 6 item arrived. Emailed and called and was told that the missing items would be shipped in two weeks. Informed that there policy was to stick to the shipping schedule for new orders or replacements and not displace other orders. I requested that since my order was never filled those two plants were still pending and should be shipped immediately. was again told it didnt matter but that they would have mary, one of the owners call me. No call came but did see shipment notice and presumed that might be the items- no luck. it was the backordered items. so in fact they could have just put the two little plants in the big box...

this order was for a mothers day garden and while two plants wont make or break a garden the premise that their shipping error doesn't merit any precedence of shipping an that you go to the end of the line doesnt work for me as a customer. Also commiting that someone will call and not- bad form .Doesn't live up to the- make gardeners happy with quality plants and service .

order at your own cost, aggravation and disappointment

I placed two orders and many of the plants arrived in terrible condition including rotted leaves and even slugs! I took pictures and emailed asking for a refund on the ones that were really bad per the advertised 30 day refund policy. I was told to plant them and give it some time as the journey can be hard on them. It didn't get better and I got no response. I called several times and left messages. I finally called my credit card company to file a dispute. GGP responded no refund because the plants were shipped and were fine just in a "dormant" state. I was never told they would be dormant and didn't look dormant, just dying and very bad quality.

I don't expect to have to revive my plants or pick off slugs when I'm paying over $200 for "superior plants" from a nursery. The plants looked worse than what you get at a run of the mill place like Lowe's or Home Depot. I am still in dispute and sending pictures and additional paperwork to the credit card company to counter GGP's response.

This has been the worse customer experience of my life. I understand plants are live things and may not arrive in good condition but the customer service was the worst part. Does anyone have any advice, can you file a complaint with the BBB or similar?

On 2-20-14 I placed an order for several different plants to be delivered in mid May. (order #93029 )On May 12 I received an email saying that they were having trouble with one of the type of plants I ordered, so they were substituting a different plant unless they heard from me. The substitute they offered was selling from a lot less than the one that I had ordered. I wrote and said that I didn't want a substitute so they wrote back and said they'd credit my card back instead. Fine. Then they sent me an email saying that they would be shipping my remaining plants in Mid June. A full month later than originally promised. So today, June 10th, they sent me another email saying that the other plants that I ordered aren't meeting their quality control standards so they were cancelling that part of my order. So many months of planning for these specific plants, and I'm getting no plants at all. I'm not happy. To make matters worse, as of today, I have not been credited for ANY of the cancelled plants. My order total was only $75.70 but it was my money and I want it back. I don't think they should bill the card until they can ship the plants. What are they doing, taking all sorts of orders in and using the paid for orders to float the cost of doing business and then cancelling the orders? Needless to say, I'm not going to risk ordering from them again. I plan to contact American Express within the next few days if my entire payment isn't credited by the end of this week.

On July 3rd, 2014, phkat added the following:

On June 9th they refunded me $8.45 for the one echinacea Raspberry Truffle, this was the first plant they told me they didn't have (and wanted to sub for a different one, but I declined the substitute). Today, July 2, I received a check for $35 for the roses that they ended up not being able to send either. I paid $35.90 for them so I'm not sure why they only sent $35. I did end up with the "deal of the day" and one other plant that I ordered, plus a sedum that was a freebie. My main gripe is that I only ordered anything extra at all because I wanted 2 of the Climbing Rose Zephirine Drouhin. So I ended up paying $14.95 for shipping for plants I added to that rose order and lost $5.90 on the roses. I wouldn't have placed an order at all without the roses.
All in all, I do not plan to order anything from this company again. I can't count on them at all. By the time one finds out that you're not getting your plants, they've had your money for 5 months, and its also too late to order the plants elsewhere. Not worth the gamble for me. Your mileage may vary.

I ordered 6 perennials. First time I have ever ordered from this company. The packaging was first class. I don't think I have ever ordered perennials with such beautiful packaging. And the plants arrived on time, sent within days of my order. Perfect ordering experience. The prices were excellent and the quality of the plants was extremely high. I WILL definitely be ordering from them again.

27 out of 30 plants arrived in good shape when my first order arrived, so I ordered again. I ordered two collections which each contained 1 ornamental grass as the focal point and 2 or 3 each of 3 other plant varieties. The ornamental grass was not available, so they sent the rest of the collection without it, indicating it was back-ordered. I called to see when it would arrive, and was told it was not back-ordered as indicated on my shipping statement, but was totally unavailable. They told me I could not return the other items and that I had only two choices - take a refund for only the grass or choose a different grass. This is absolutely unacceptable so I called back and was told the same thing again by a different agent. I chose the collection because it was exactly what I was looking for, and if the whole collection couldn't be shipped, they should not have shipped a portion of it. I sent an email days ago to let them know I would be disputing the charge, there was no reply. I just looked at the website and they are still selling the Heat-Lovers Delight Sun Collection even though they know they know a portion of it is not available. Very bad business practices, I will never shop with them again.

This was my first order with Great Garden plants. While I was pleased with half the order, the other half was not so great.

I ordered 7 Black Eye Susans, 6 yellow knock out roses, and 4 Hydrangea.

The Hydrangea looked great. I had no issues with them.

3 of the Black eyed Susans arrived with crushed leaves. I cut them back, hopefully they will resprout. The other 4 were nice, heavily rooted plants. Not a huge issue, I undertand shipping can be tough on plants.

My biggest complaint is that ALL of the knock out roses had spider mites to a degree, some less, some more, but 3 were completely covered in webs at the bottom and had several dead branches and dead leaves in the webbing. It's hard to understand how this was overlooked. I've cleaned up the roses, but had to make drastic cuts to remove the nasty stuff from these plants. They have not been planted, and I've got them in quarantine until I get the spider mites eradicated.

I ordered from this company for the first time last fall. My order arrived promptly and expertly packed. The plants were healthy and in great shape, and I planted them all within three days of their arrival. Despite a particularly long, cold winter, most of the plants survived and are now doing well. I am particularly pleased with a Hellebore and a Brunnera Jack Frost. There are a couple plants that have shown no signs of life yet, but I want to give them a little more time before I contact the company.

At the same time I ordered from GGP, I placed an order with another well known company. It was more costly than GGP, and I was not nearly as happy with the packaging or the condition of the plants when they arrived.

I am planning another order from Great Garden Plants this spring.

I did place a good sized order last spring and received a large box where they had sticks in every plant and a weak rubber-band. All the dirt was out of the pots and everything was everywhere. I emailed the company and explained to them that the 'this end up' label means nothing to ups or fedx. The box had been upside down and dropped several times. I had ordered a Viburnum shrub which never did recover from the box trauma. Just as with a previous order I took a picture of the plant and emailed it to the company and they gave my money back. I was disappointed that the shrub was only 9 inches tall. I have never had a problem getting refunds for dead or damaged plants but I would rather not deal with it.

Wow, this company has made an amazing turn around! Great new packing method, everything is very secure and no dirt missing, plants were mainly dry. Which is good, no root rot. I love my Shasta Daisy's, these are nice plants that are a good size and I love my bonus plant. Secure website, user friendly and they take paypal. I really do think I will be ordering again!

My plants arrived the week after I placed my order. They were very well packaged, appeared to have survived shipping in reasonable health (just a tad yellow and droopy, but I'm sure they'll bounce back), and were pleasingly larger than I had expected.

On July 2nd, 2013, bluesox changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following:

Most of the plants I ordered are doing well (one hasn't taken off yet, but I expect it to come once it establishes itself).

The problem is, now that they've started to bloom, some of them don't appear to be what I ordered.

The Coreopsis Cosmic Eye has unicolor, washed out, off-white blossoms rather than "claret-red daisy-like flowers ... tipped in golden sunshine yellow". It's a nice enough plant, but not what I ordered and looks oddly out of place where planted because it doesn't fit the color scheme. (It was supposed to be the keystone in the front of the garden, marking a transition from maroon to yellow.

The Echinacea Julia blossoms are small (1 to 1.5 inch) and nearly as purple as they are orange, rather than the "giant 4" vibrant orange flowers" heralded on the website. I suppose a young plant might have smaller blossoms than a mature one, but will the flowers become a different color when the plant is older?

I have a wait and see attitude toward the Echinacea, but I am very disappointed in the Coreopsis.
On July 8th, 2013, bluesox changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

Thanks, I'll try that.
On July 11th, 2013, bluesox added the following:

The most recent bloom on the Julia is orange, so I believe that is the right plant.

The coreopsis is just wrong, though. The second flush of flowers is exactly the same as the first. Not a single petal is bicolor and the petals contain neither of the colors associated with Coreopsis Cosmic Eye. Various web sites describe them as maroon, burgundy, or claret red near the center fading to golden sunshine yellow or sunny yellow at the tips. These are off-white.
On July 29th, 2013, bluesox changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following:

After supplying photographic documentation that the wrong plant was sent, I received no response.

So much for their guarantee.
On August 12th, 2013, bluesox changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

I did receive an e-mail promising a refund, so I am changing the negative rating.

Dear Bluesox,
We are here to assist you the best we can.

I know this sounds harsh - but we would suggest that your prune off this first flush of blooms. Our experience has been when buds set when growing under greenhouse poly - for whatever technical reason - may not necessarily always bloom their true colors. Trimming off the first flush will also help bulk up the plants while helping them to establish better in your garden. Flowers will have a tendency to be smaller in size the first year. (BTW - my second year on Julie - just outstanding!)
All the best to you and keep us posted.
Mary & Chris
