Every time I call customer service I am taken care of to my satisfaction. That said I really wish I had no reason to write or call. |
| Negative | daigwil (1 review) | On Jan 8, 2014, daigwil Iowa City, IA (Zone 5a) wrote: Sorry Guys, I used to order from Bluestone quite a lot, but I had the same experience with others with these coir pots. Quite a lot of the plants died, and when I looked the following spring the pots were still there, in one piece. It seems like a good idea, but it just didn't work reliably enough, at least in my experience. And the prices increased enough that I really couldn't justify paying thata much for their plants. They do have an awesome selection, so if you are looking for something really specific, it might be worth a shot, but now I just stick to my local nurseries. |

In my opinion and I have ordered from many ! On October 12th, 2010, stormcloud added the following: BLUESTONE is the best....you can count on them to always be reliable and stand behind their products without giving anyone a hardtime. On April 29th, 2011, stormcloud added the following: I placed an order here mid winter and it arrived as scheduled in early April. Apparently shipped too early as some teeny tiny seedlings were crushed, and broken. The quickly replaced them with hearty looking plants so they are as good as their word regarding their guarantee. Their packing is just terrible and things arrived dumped and broken when you finally get thru the peanuts to locate the plants. I DO THINK THEY ARE THE BEST ONLINE NURSERY TO ORDER FROM AND I WILL CONTINUE. On April 17th, 2012, stormcloud added the following: Yesterday my Bluestone order arrived and was I ever shocked ! Opened the box quickly since it was very hot here....the little plants are just as full and perky as can be, The new packaging is fantastic and well worth paying more for.NOW ALL I HAVE TO DO IS HOPE THEY GROW !! LOVE THIS COMPANY ! On April 17th, 2012, stormcloud added the following: P.S. With all the poor companies online, and I have had my fill of them, I cannot imagine why anyone would give a negative rating to Bluestone. On May 21st, 2012, stormcloud added the following: I received another terrific order from Bluestone !! Went ahead and placed yet one more since there were coupons in the box with the order. The first group are in bloom already !! I just love these new pots....top soil did fall out during shipping but added a few spoons of soil until I got to planting..This has been a great experience for me as I am handicapped and do most all of my ordering on line. I have received so much junk and so many problems from several online nurseries and am just delighted with what I have received from Bluestone !! MANY THANKS FOLKS ! On May 14th, 2013, stormcloud changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: I am no longer happy with Bluestone perennials. Not a one of the plants I ordered and planted last year (2012) has returned this Spring. Each of my other perennials is up and thriving. I was so pleased with the coir planter pots when they arrived but I am so disappointed now. What has further happened is i wanted Dorothy Rose Aquiligia and nowhere cold I locate them except at Bluestone. So I took a chance and ordered 3 and they arrived last night...Another great disappointment ! One of these tiny little plants has the main stem broken off. They are each 2 leaved plans and a total disgrace at $9.5 each plus $9.99 shipping I thought I could expect a reasonable order to be delivered. NOT SO. I do not know what has happened to this former top 30 garden center. On May 15th, 2013, stormcloud changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following: Unfortunately I feel the need to post NEGATIVE on my feedback now. I wrote to the company about the defective plant I was sent along with other issues.... They have not responded to either my personal e mail or my neutral post on here. I am so disappointed...what has happened to this once great company ? On May 15th, 2013, stormcloud changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following: OK..perhaps I changed my original rating too quickly, however they do say to notify them as soon as possible if plants arrive damaged. I am terribly aggravated over all the dead and not dissolved plants from last year . I will wait until the new plants arrive and then may upgrade once again. Original email was sent on the 13th. Thank you for responding here. On May 19th, 2013, stormcloud added the following: Bluestone is a reliable honest company. They have replaced the the 3 Columbine they originally sent with reasonable plants. However, I am not changing my rating from neutral because I do not think it should be necessary to go through all this in order to get something reasonable for their high prices. The new plants are more than double the size of the original ones which should never have been shipped in the first place. On October 30th, 2013, stormcloud changed the rating from neutral to negative and added the following: I need to update my comments for others to read. Not even 1 of the items I bought from Bluestone in the past 2 years has survived. When I remove the dead plants from the ground they are still intact in the coir pots having not ever grown at all. I do not know what has happened to this once A+ company . It is much too embarrassing to be writing to complain to Bluestone so I will just not be buying from them again. On Oct 30, 2013, Bluestone Perennials responded with: "On May 15, 2013 1:30 PM, Bluestone Perennials responded with: We received the email you sent last night when we opened this morning, and the office will be responding directly via email to resolve your shipping damage with either a reshipment or a refund, at your request. Talk about going downhill fast. 4 of the "shrubs" I potted up have since died. The weigela "Ghost" was the first to go, followed by all 3 of the chaenomeles that I ordered. I had them in a sheltered spot (filtered sunlight), not too dry, not too damp. Never again. On October 22nd, 2013, lilaclily changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following: In retrospect, I am a bit embarrassed that I let my emotions write such an unhappy review. Yes, the plants died. Yes, many have died in the past as well. But the truth is, I did not alert Bluestone to the problem and didn't allow them the chance to turn my frown upside down before posting feedback here. For that, I apologize. Pat contacted me and was very patient with me as we went back and forth trying to figure out the high percentage of fatalities. Because I am an experienced gardener, it is hard for me to accept when I or my conditions are responsible for the fatality but I do feel I was honest in listing the plants that died at my hand - there were not many of them but they did exist. The rest, who knows? Circumstances are mysterious at best, especially when I have a garden filled with literally hundreds of successful perennials. I will again say that their customer service is top-notch. Pat truly seemed to care about my unhappiness and I will say that she went completely above and beyond in trying to make me happy. She succeeded. | Positive | shoetree1 (1 review) | On Jul 30, 2013, shoetree1 Asharoken, NY wrote: I have been ordering from Bluestone Perennials for the last 4 years. My perennial gardens (shade and sun) are comprised almost exclusively of Bluestone plants and I've only lost one and that was due to my dog digging it up repeatedly. My last experience ordering was the spring 50% off sale. When some plants didn't arrive (and weren't listed as sold out) I contacted customer service. I wasn't happy with the 1st response from them and let them know it. Pat, in the Cust. Serv. office took great pains to make it right. Fantastic, prompt response! The hosta I did order is doing beautifully, as are the salvia. The coir pots seem to do well if you rip and loosen the bottoms prior to planting. I love Bluestone's variety, online plant finder, thorough and clear instructions and plant information. It is a great site for a rank beginner (as I was 4 years ago) as well as an experienced gardener. I have tried other online sites but never had the success I've had with the Bluestone plants. |

However, as another reviewer noted, you just don't want to call customer service and complain again about dead plants. Unfortunately, over half of my order from last year did not come back this year. I think it might be their coir pots. The plant aren't there but the pots still are from last year - they haven't completely broken down. I wish I had taken the plants out of the pots to plant them. I also have a few more expensive plants from them that have failed to thrive or died from previous years (two clematis and a hydrangea come to mind). I wish there had been another outcome. Receiving the Bluestone catalog in the winter gets me dreaming of summer. I love their selection and while the replacement policy is great, I just don't feel comfortable calling and asking for a replacement for so many plants. |

I will update again when I receive the new violas.. if by some miracle they are in good shape I may change this to a positive -- Clearly this company wants to keep its customers happy, which I do appreciate. On May 24th, 2008, lemurianne changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: After having complained about the state of a plant shipped to me, I received a refund and a free re-shipment of the same plant the following week. Though I still feel that the plant in question (Etain Viola) should be in much better shape for the price, I appreciate the service and have to admit that the other, CHEAPER plants I ordered look great so far! I will most definitely order from Bluestone Perennials again. The fantastic customer service makes up for the annoying packing peanuts and spindly, yellow-foliaged violas. On May 8th, 2013, lemurianne added the following: It has been several years since I last left feedback, but I do think I have ordered something from Bluestone Perennials each year since and been pleased. When I was a just starting out as a gardener, I loved BP for their incredibly cheap prices and sets of 3 that would fill in a space quicker than one plant alone. But now, as a slightly more experienced gardener, I appreciate their new format -- bigger, healthier single plants for more money, but still very reasonable. I don't pay more for the plant + shipping than I would if I was buying something this size from my local nurseries this time of year. And the selection at BP is so much bigger! I received an order today and couldn't be happier -- everything is big and healthy and arrived undamaged. I will say that I always remove the coco pots because they don't break down fast enough in my gardens' soil. The few time I did put them in the ground the plant became root-bound and died, but since I've been removing the pots I've had no trouble :) I will continue to order from Bluestone Perennials. On June 11th, 2013, lemurianne added the following: I ordered a second time this year to partake of their great sale, and I was terrified when I received the email stating that the plants were shipped via UPS ground ON A FRIDAY!! There is no excuse for that. I almost called to complain immediately, but thought I'd go ahead and wait to receive the plants. The plants arrived the following week, alive but wilted and starting to yellow. After a couple days of nursing them along they looked no worse for wear and upon planting them I felt that they were obviously healthy, well-rooted plants when they were shipped. I still can't believe any nursery would ship via UPS on a Friday, but the plants are already sprouting new growth and buds, so I can't complain too much! |

The other half was blackened and shriveled. This was not a case of shipping damage, those plants were boxed and sent in that condition. It only took 3 days for the plants to arrive at my door and I unpacked them immediately. I emailed Bluestone and they responded promptly and said they would either send replacements or give a credit. I received a credit. So I would give them a 'A' on customer service and a 'D' on plant quality. And I absolutely HATE those coir pots. |

I planted the whole thing into a large pot and it thrived. Now suddenly it started going down hill while the other hosta's were thriving. It was the coco pot. It did not decompose, it was tuff as ever and the plant was root bound. Maybe we should at least rip off the bottom, I had the same problem with the peat pots, the plants just won't grow. On June 1st, 2012, virginiarose added the following: I do not know about the previous price list. A company does what it has to do to stay in business. Compared to other web-nurseries I found them to be normal as far as prices go. I love the packing and not too keen on the Coco pots, but I just remove the pot and plant them. I was really happy to get some shrubs at their 50% off sale, I've been waiting all year for these winterberries. Yes, winterberries for 7.77 each. They were ten times as big as some Caryopteris shrubs I bought from another popular company. I also got a huge Echinacea @ 4.47 it is by far the biggest and healthiest I have ever gotten. And best price, also got two baptisia that were both 12 inches tall at least and for all these plants the shipping was only 9.95. I think this company is worth a second look, I will certainly keep ordering from them happily, and will recommend them to my friends. I compare prices all the time and I have been happy with this company, even for small plants but sometimes they surprise me. :)) On April 25th, 2013, virginiarose added the following: Received another wonderful order from BS. They twisted my arm with that 10% off and the free plant thing. I love this company, the website is very user friendly which means a lot to me. If I see something I like I can put it in my shopping cart or wish list and it stays there. Smart Company! :)) I love the sales and the selection of plants and the prices. They have a little of everything it seems. The Coconut fiber is good for the environment and there is no plastic on the landfill. I just re-pot to a bigger size anyway. There was a little dirt missing in a few of the pots. 'This end up' means, let's play volleyball!! On June 8th, 2013, virginiarose added the following: I put in two orders this spring and got a lot of wonderful plants. There was a problem with UPS and my plants did not make it here on time, two shrubs died eventually. I notified Bluestone and sent a couple of pictures. They apologized right away and shipped out new plants they never made me feel like it was my fault. The replacement plants are even bigger than the first ones and my second order was beautiful too, I got a lot of things I would not have been able to afford other wise. Love the 50% off. :) Once you register you will have a permanent shopping cart and you can add and delete stuff as you will. Also it is easy to create a wish list. Great Website!! |

I know everyones experience with Bluestone is unique, but come on people...#1 I know everyone is used to getting things immediately in this day and age but give them time to respond to emails and other correspondance, #2 they are shipping live plants to you in a box that will probably get heated up quite a bit during shipping, especially if they are in transit for a few days, most plants will bounce back very well...if not, see #1. I have ordered many large orders this year and in years past and everything for the most part was great. When I did have an issue with a plant not being what it should or a plant that came out of the pot completely during shipping, I did the adult thing and contacted them via email and waited like a good girl for a response which always came within an appropriate time. I didn't immediately go into a huffypuffy whiney, omg this company should have known better, state of mind. Crap happens, people make mistakes. As to their coco pots, I still love them but I too have experienced that sometimes they were not breaking down quick enough to allow for new root growth, so I solved that by using small garden shears and making slits on the sides and bottom of the pot. I did that last fall and this spring and I'm not having any problems. I had first tried peeling them off but sometimes the roots were a little too attached to the inside of the pot and I was afraid of pulling at the roots too much. I'm a comparison shopper and there have been many a time that even though Bluestone's price might have been a little higher, I was more willing to invest my money on their plants because of the track record I have had with Bluestone and their plants these past 4 years. Yes some plants won't survive, that's a given, but you have to own up when you're part of the issue too. Dave's does a great service to those looking for reputable companies to order from and I wholey believe Bluestone should be right up there at the top. And for those of you that actually read this whole post, sorry for being so long winded!! lol |

Good selection, healthy plants, and unbeatable prices. They changed all that a couple of years ago, and it's a much less appealing source now. First, they tripled their prices. Sure, they upped the size of their plants, but I think few of their regular customers appreciated the trade-off. Second, the put their plants in "biodegradable cocopots." I am not sure about how well these degrade, but I urge you to NEVER PLANT THEM DIRECTLY IN THE GROUND. Most of the plants I tried this with last year are still relegated to that little 4" x 4" space. A very few were able to grow through it, but I will never plant it directly again. Now I'm left with the choice of digging the plants up, thereby disturbing their growth, or watching them be small for however many years it takes for the cocopots to disappear. Sure, you can cut the pot and remove the plant, but this is much more likely to damage the roots than removal from a plastic pot. |

I ordered 16 plants and all 16 arrived in excellent condition. I think they were the largest plants I have ever received from Bluestone and everything looked healthy. They've increased the size of some of their plants -- much appreciated -- and they're always packed extremely well. My newest plants are up and growing, beating out all the competition (except for Rosy Dawn coleus plants!). On February 12th, 2012, revclaus changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following: I loved Bluestone and was thrilled to see the new coir pots. But when I checked into the website earlier this year and discovered the pricing that went with the new pots I was crushed. I'm a widow on a small fixed income and can no longer afford to buy from Bluestone. As with many of the other negative comments about the price change, the value at Bluestone was the ability to buy three perennials at a low price even if I did have to wait a year for the plant to catch up to the pricier plants at other garden centers and online sources. So now I'll be shopping locally where I can still get smaller plants at a lower price. I'm sure they've invested a lot of money in their new system, so I don't think they'll have any way of reversing course given the negative feedback from so many long-time users. It's a shame, because they filled a niche market need. But now only the well-off can purchase there. Last year's plants were awesome and did very well. I'm sad that Bluestone can no longer serve my needs. On May 8th, 2013, revclaus added the following: I bought a clematis in 2011. When it arrived it was dry and falling out of the pot. Bluestone sent me another. It did not do well, so they replaced it again. They didn't have to do that so I was appreciative. But it was a much smaller pot like they used to send. It did all right last year but this year not so much. Weather related: we had two days of 9 degree weather and three blizzards in late April and early May. Everything on the vine died but there are some shoots coming up. I had also bought gaillardia plants which were awesome last year and the year before. Also some campanula which are doing well. Bluestone is the place where I will buy perennials, but that will always be smaller than if I buy them locally. The beauty of Bluestone is the variety available. |

The packaging was corrugated. Not a plastic pot or styrofoam packing peanut i sight. Thanks so much, Bluestone, for your environmentally sound materials. |

Ditto for the Sedum 'Matrona'; the only disappointment is one of the Clethra I ordered isn't showing any signs of life :( Overall, I would still order from them again in a heartbeat.. On April 10th, 2003, go_vols added the following: I placed another order with Bluestone this year, and once again, was very pleased. This time my order was for shrubs and a clematis, and the size and vigor of the plants compare favorably to other mail-order sources for similar plants (for example, I ordered two deciduous Magnolias, one from Bluestone the other from a different nursery. They are comparable in terms of size, fullness and leafing out, and the Bluestone plant was significantly less expensive.) Way to go Bluestone!. On September 18th, 2004, go_vols added the following: I just wanted to say thanks - my order arrived right on time yesterday (despite Hurricane Ivan) and was in great shape - as usual. On June 7th, 2007, Terry added the following: Another great order - I took advantage of their spring sale to pick up several three-packs of perennials and a Clematis. Everything arrived looking fresh and perky. A couple of the plants weren't *quite* as well-rooted as I would have liked, but I think a little extra TLC (necessary anyway due to the high temps and dry conditions we're experiencing) will help them settle in and do well, as their plants normally do. New since my last order - they used a box that was exactly the size to snugly hold a standard plant flat, which they included with my plants, making it easy to carry everything outside to the border bed Thanks!!!! On May 7th, 2013, Terry added the following: I haven't ordered from Bluestone in a few years, but now that we're settled in our new home and my gardens are taking shape, I took advantage of a recent offer for a free plant with $75 purchase. I'm glad I did! Love the new coir planting containers, and as always, the plants arrived well-packed and ready to go in the ground. |

In fact, I have come to prefer them over any other online vendor. The coco pots are genius, especially for some of the more fragile perennials. For the first time, I was able to successfully grow lupines and delphiniums - and they came back this spring in zone 6. I planted several perennials in the fall, and they too returned. Customer service is excellent - friendly, prompt and helpful. I wanted to add some plants to my order after placing it and although it was too late, they offered to send me the plants with no extra shipping costs. Selection is also excellent. I highly recommend. |

Bluestone sent me a replacement last spring, and the poor thing is struggling so badly, I almost want to put it out of its misery. It is still less than 6 inches tall. Meanwhile, the clematis I ordered from Brushwood Nursery grows like a weed every year. I am done with Bluestone - their quality is just not as good as it used to be. The pots might have been a bit small (maybe 3" size) but each plant was tall & had strong stems. I liked that the pots were obviously bio-degradable - I can plant the pot & all - a nice touch. They have a beautiful catalogue which is a little confusing to use at first, but the plants that arrived matched the healthy look of their pictures. One additional note: the clematis I ordered is one for which I had been searching for over 15 years! The costs were reasonable. I will buy from them again & recommend this nursery to others. |

The plants received were meticulously packed with excellent usage of green materials. The coco pots are not only green + functional but they ensure the consumer never receives rootbound plants from Bluestone as the Coco pots are so highly biodegradeable that the likelihood they will last for any appreciable amount of time is almost impossible. Having a fairly new property, the time savings in being able to simply dig a small hole and plant - pot and all is a real consumer pleaser. I give Bluestone Perennials two enthusiastic thumbs up. Everything about the company oozes quality! Gary from Lewes, Delaware |
