I am thrilled with my order from Marietta Gardens. The plants are some of the nicest I've ever received with large, healthy roots. Plus one of the Shooter's own introductions as a bonus plant! The communication was excellent. Shipping was quick, with all plants wrapped with care and clearly labeled. This company is absolutely excellent.

I am a first buyer who has only one daylily. After reading a lot about daylilies this spring, I emailed Marietta this week and got a return email from Faye Shooter in a few minutes. I live in the deep south and needed the daylilies ASAP. Faye promised that my daylilies, ordered on Wednesday, would go out the next day-Thursday. I was astonished to receive them late yesterday-Friday.

All of the daylily fans are a wonderful size, and they are fresh and healthy. The gift plants are also large and healthy. I cannot imagine being more pleased with a company.

Also, I cannot imagine a person who is easier to deal with than Faye Shooter.

I have driven past Marietta Gardens at least 10 times a year for the past 20 years and have always enjoyed traveling past the acres of green fronds in neat rows. Driving by when many plants are in bloom is breath taking. But I am not a gardener. This may explain why it took me 18 years to venture into the Marietta Garden's office looking for SOMETHING to plant in a natural area along the side of the house. I had the good fortune to meet John and Faye Shooter. John helped me pick out several plants from the catalog, dug them out of the fields and I left with my purchases, convinced that I would manage to kill them by the end of the month. That was March 2006.

I went home to Charlotte, planted them three days later in whatever ground is at the side of the house, no fertilizer, no special soil. I did water them. Imagine my suprise when several actually bloomed a month or two later. That first year I was stunned that they were alive. Last year the whole family went out every morning to see which buds were blooming. Each and every flower is like a work of art. I couldn't believe they were actually growing in my yard! Out of everything I picked out, the bonus flower that John selected is my favorite. 2007 brought water restrictions to a dry NC. We were not allowed to water our lawns in Charlotte for half of last year. But my plants are all coming up larger than last year. I can't wait to see what they look like this year.

Yesterday, I stopped back by Marietta Gardens and John and I dug several more out of the fields for me to take home. I was suprised to find out that my bonus flower is more expensive than anything I ordered. I planted them last night and can't wait for the blooms. And in case anyone is questioning whether the drought has impacted the quality of the Marietta Garden flowers, please be assured that everything I saw as we rode through the fields looked green, healthy and strong.

Because of their very extensive photo library along w/ descriptions for each cultivar... I can't imagine anyone NOT finding their perfect daylily here!

I am thrilled to report another wonderful experience ordering and receiving my order from Marietta Gardens. This time Faye found me 25 South Seas for a garden.
We e-mailed back and forth with success. My order was shipped when I needed it and arrived in three days to Idaho; healthy, happy and nice sized plants. I will make them my 1st choice when trying to locate DLs now and in the future.
Thanks to them I am having a successful Fall.
P.S. My last order bloomed the same year and I was able to divide the plants this Fall to spread around the yard. I anticipate the same results with this order.

I really appreciate the quick response from this nursery. Unlike many of the other daylily nurseries from which I have recently ordered plants, I didn't have to wait for weeks for my order to arrive. I plan to order more daylilies from them again, soon.

In a word: Outstanding!!! I can't say enough good things about the Shooters, their gorgeous plants, or their customer service. This is what gardening by mail should be! It's a true pleasure to deal with such nice people, and I hope I can meet them in person some day. I have ordered from them two years in a row now. The plants are absolutely huge, immaculately clean, lovingly packed, and extremely healthy. All the plants are double to quadruple fans with enormous roots. As someone else said, they are thoughtful in choosing the bonus plants. With my first order they sent Mapping Kentucky. They actually communicate with you, unlike most mail order places. They are very nice, helpful and friendly on the phone. I also had several e-mail exchanges with Faye in reference to my second order. She picked up on the type of lilies I like, and the bonus plant was stunning. Unfortunately, two plants from my first order didn't make it (I still can't figure out why, as they were so beautiful when I got them), but they were cheerfully replaced. Their Web site is great -- high quality photos (unlike many) with clear descriptions. Their prices are also very fair and not overpriced. This is a wonderful company to deal with -- highly recommended.

I got an order from them this spring that was in very good condition, and had a nice bonus. I placed a new order, and got a phone call from the owner this past week. We discussed the fall, temperatures and growing conditions. After hearing his suggestions, I placed it for spring shipping instead. He could have just taken my money and shipped now, but he was more interested in having my plants grow and perform well for me. Because he takes the time to look over the orders and deals with each on a one on one basis, I highly recommend them. His plants are good as are the bonuses, but that can be said of many places. His inventory is excellent, but that can be said of a few places. His concern for your planting success, to the point of calling on a holiday when you can't be reached otherwise, not often found. Because of all these things added together, I will add to my April 6,2007 order and perhaps buy more next year. No matter what, they are one of the top companies on my daylily shopping list.

I can't say enough good things about the Shooters at Marietta Gardens. When calling on Wed., June 14th, at about lunch time to discuss some unforeseen shipping concerns, Ms. Shooter said she would get the plants dug and shipped immediately. I received them on Friday, June 16th very well packed. The roots and the newspaper they were wrapped in was still damp. The daylilies were all a vibrant green, nothing was brown or yellow. The divisions were absolutely outstanding, all large, some double, triple or quadruple what I paid for. The Shooter's generosity was outstanding. The bonus plants were high dollar and also contained multiple divisions. All told, I probably received more free and bonus plants than my total order. I'm sure of it!
I'm going down to visit at the end of the month to see these nice people, I can't wait. I've planted the plants, shaded them from the intense summer sun with beach umbrellas. Almost a week after planting with temperatures in the 90s and still only minimal expected browning. Some have started new leave production already. This is a top notch operation. I highly recommend that anyone interested in daylilies buy here!!! Stephen Smith, Statesville NC

And he had included bonuses worth more than the value of my entire order!

I have never gotten such good customer service from anywhere!

The first time I ordered from John, Faye, and Elizabeth Shooter's Marietta Gardens I was very new to Daylilies. They spent a lot of time sending emails back and forth with me so that I could make my selections.

One of the plants I ordered died by the end of summer, so the next year when I ordered again, I asked if they had had problems with that particular cultivar, or if I had just choosen one that did not like my zone 5. I stressed that I was not complaining because the rest had done great, and the bonus they sent more than compensated me for my loss. (It was one of their intros abt $40 value)

I recieved a phone call from John that day, and he insisted on replacing it.

One of the one's I ordered for this spring turned out to be unavailable, and John called again to let me know and ask if he could substitute something else. He had not only picked one that was much more expensive than the $12 one I ordered, but had taken the time to choose one that he thought would be special to me. He's sending me "Cathy Cute Legs" a 2005 intro.

All of the plants I have recieved from them have been very nice sized and healthy. Even the one that died appeared to be nice mature healthy fans when it arrived. Plants die of unknown causes from all sources once in a while.

I highly recommend these folks!

I placed an order for 7 plants from Marietta Gardens in August 2005. After recieving a phone call that one of the plants I had ordered was sold out for this season, I received the order withing two days. While I was grateful for the quick turnaround, I was VERY dissapointed in the quality of the plants. Most of the plants were very small and pale, as if they had been out of the ground for a while. Of the 7 plants I ordered, 4 died within 2 weeks of planting, from what I deduced was crown rot (I have several hundred cultivars, and this was the first time I had experienced this problem, so I do not believe that they were planted incorrectly). I sent several emails to the Shooters, and did not get one response. I was unable to find a "satisfaction guarantee" on their website or in their catalog, and obviously they were not concerned about my repeat business. They have a great selection, and usually the best prices around, but VERY POOR customer service. I will not purchase from them again unless I cannot find a plant I want elsewhere.

On March 6th, 2006, edmoejewel changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

Practically as soon as I posted my previous rating, Mr. Shooter called and offered to replace all plants that were dead. He said that the best way to contact them if you have an issue that you would like to have resolved is by phone. He suggested ordering earlier in the growing season (my order was placed in August), less heat stress on the plants. He also stressed that the plants are dug at the time the order is placed, they are not pre-dug and stored. Based on this phone conversation, I will now be more apt to try another order.

Half my Marietta order of 5 daylilies were very small, poorly rooted plants. One unattached fan had one strand of root attached… the two others severed. I emailed my dissatisfaction with a picture of this order to Marietta, noting the website and invoice did not have any stated procedure for returns. After not receiving an answer for one week I emailed again. Mr Shooter then called our residence and proceeded to query the Lady of the House about my experience growing daylilies as I was not at home. Mr. Shooter called back later.. ignoring anything I attempted to say.. talking over my words. After this continued for several minutes I’d had my fill. I used Mr. Shooter’s tactic on him.. insisting on an answer to my question: “if you were a customer receiving this order would you be satisfied with it?” I never received an answer this question.. he hung the phone up when his tactics were employed against him.

Around a week later a refund check arrived.. the postage added insufficient for a return mailing of the plants. I had no knowledge of this coming and had given the ‘bonus’ plant such as it was away… a full return wasn’t possible. So I returned this check promptly-- voided out.

In 30+ inbound daylily orders here over 3-4 yrs these are the worst quality plants I’ve received. I can understand mistakes being made but whoever packaged and dug with order couldn’t have cared less—sending a fan with one root strand attached. The other two unsatisfactory plants were so small there’s no expectation of a bloom this season. While some daylilies do not bloom after being moved and shipped, a plant should be sent having enough root system to have a chance of blooming this season. Those tiny, recently lined out fans sent were not worth their price.

Mr. Shooter completely ignored anything I said in the phone conversation. His manner in the previous call was condescending and out of line. His whole manner of treatment of a customer was just plain rude. I garden and grow daylilies for enjoyment and do not need or will not tolerate this kind of treatment.

Never again.
