Rhus Aromatica Red berries from Sumac native to North America are mostly used to make a lemonade-type drink that some call it "sumac-ade." For a pitcher of pink lemonade, use 6 to 8 clusters of berries,soak in cold water overnight, then squeeze the berries, after strain out through cheesecloth a couple times to remove fine hairs that come off the berries and discard the berries, then sweeten the juice to taste. Use stevia for a sugar-free drink or sugar. Also sweetened with berries is delicious. A juice can be also made from dried berries, and used in cooking. When dried berries are ground into a powder, the powder doesn't have much aroma, but has flavor. Native Americans would gather red Sumac berries, and dry them for food over the winter. The berries have velvet-like hair on them. The tartness is in the hairs. Most of the flavor is on the surface of the skin. A white sticky substance on the red berries is fine, that's the malic acid that give the berries their tartness. Also, beautiful bright red fall foilage makes an attractive fall plant. Very easy to grow. They are picked when they are fully ripe, a dark reddish-purple, but before rain has had a chance to wash the flavor off them. If the berries are harvested before they are ripe, they will be bitter. If harvested after a rainfall, their flavor will be washed away.They are dried after being picked. z-A definition of NAFTY A-Not Available For Trade Yet NAFTY Items are here at the end of my Have List to make it easier for traders to see what is currently NOT available. Most of my NAFTY-N.ot A.vailable F.or T.rade Y.et- items are plants, seeds, cuttings, etc. just received in trade and are currently being grown and will be available shortly, but aren't currently available for me to trade. A few, such as trees will take more time and cuttings won't be available for a year or two. I still list those items and will put your name to them-so you know I have them and will be trading them in the future. Sometimes it's hard to find someone who is willing to trade, so I do this so you know someone you can trade with, in the future, to receive the items you want. It helps me by not wasting the prunings of most of these plants that need it anyways, when I share cuttings. ;-) It's different, but it's my way of showing and sharing what I have with you and for us to continue a trading relationship into the future.
