'Arabian Night' - cabernet wine red, fully double flowers that are more dense than cactus types but looser than pompons; 18"-24"; 1951. Native to Mexico and Central America, dahlias provide us with more pleasure than almost any other summer bulb we have because they produce an abundance of wonderful flowers perfect for 'gift giving flower arrangements' throughout early summer and again in late summer until frost. Especially if they are picked for arrangements, these 'cut and come again' plants require almost no care, they appear to be pest resistant and they come in a myriad of colors. Our friends really enjoy them as well! They make a great 'shoes and socks' plant for larger bulbs or perennials and are happy in full sun or partial shade. Dahlias have different shapes from the tightly formed flowers of the pompon-types to the looser ones of the cactus-types and the decorative in-between types, they're all terrific! Top-sized tubers; approx. 1 per sq. ft.; zones 8-10; has overwintered in our zone; top-sized tubers.

Fiery red with a golden flamed center. Originating from Mexico and Guatemala, Dahlias were the flowers of Inca kings and despite their royal origins Dahlias are amoungst the easiest plants to grow in the garden. They are a wonderful source of cut flowers and will provide a veritable cornucopia of colourful blooms for your bouquets from mid summer until the first hard frost in the late fall. Dahlias are hardy in zones 8 -10. Dahlias are susceptible to cold so be careful not to plant them too early and be sure to dig them up and store them in a frost-free place before old Jack Frost comes calling if you are planting them in a cooler zone! Your new Dahlias tubers can be stored in the refrigerater until planting time or get a head start on spring and start them indoors in a sunny window.

From late summer to early fall, 'Garden Wonder' dahlia produces striking red flowers above bright-green foliage. This dahlia's large blooms are held on long, strong stems that are great for cutting. Like other formal decorative dahlias, the petals are uniformly arranged and rolled. Plant type tender-perennial,bulb Hardiness zones 8 to 10 Light full-sun Height 2 ft. to 3 ft. Spread 1 ft.
to 2 ft. Soil pH slightly-acidic-to-neutral-pH6.5-7
Soil moisture moist Bloom time fall, summer
Flower color red Bloom size 6 in. to 6 in. Foliage color medium-green did you know? Like many other great colorful plants fuchsias and cosmos, for example the dahlia is a New World plant that originated in Mexico. It was cultivated and probably improved by the Aztecs for generations before Spanish explorers first saw it in the 16th century. The American Dahlia Society currently recognizes 17 distinct categories of dahlias on the basis of flower shape. general maintenance: For garden plants, pinch out center growing point early in the season to encourage bushiness. For exhibition-quality blooms, pinch out some side shoots and buds to encourage fewer but larger blooms. Stake to support bushy plants and heavy flowers. pests/diseases: Caterpillars, slugs, snails, aphids, gray mold verticillium wilt, fusarium, and dahlia mosaic virus may occur. controls: Handpick caterpillars, slugs, and snails. Spread diatomaceous earth around plants to discourage slugs. Regularly hose off aphids with a directed stream of water or apply insecticidal soap, following label directions. To control gray mold and mosaic virus, remove diseased foliage and flowers or entire plants if severely diseased. To control verticillium wilt and fusarium, reduce soil moisture or remove and destroy severely infected plants. Avoid planting dahlias in the same place year after year to reduce risk of verticillium wilt and fusariam. how to sow/plant: Plant in compost-rich, well-drained beds or containers in spring when soil has warmed. To avoid piercing tubers, insert support stakes in soil before planting. Set tubers 4?6 inches deep and at least 2 feet apart. Water after planting, and mulch to conserve moisture. water and fertilize:Maintain soil moisture all season. Feed weekly with an all-purpose fertilizer (5-10-5), following label directions. garden hint: In mild climates (Zones 8?10), dahlia tubers may be left in the ground year-round. In colder climates, carefully lift tubers after the first fall frost blackens the foliage. Store them in a cool spot (40°F) in shallow boxes of peat or sand, covered so only the stems poke out. features: Attractive Flowers Attractive Foliage garden Uses: Flowerbed borders Cut Flower combine with: ornamental sage wormwood and canna lily

A fashionably dark maroon cactus dahlia that is great for the dark border. The fully double flowers have long, narrow, pointed petals that recurve for more half their length. This dahlia looks great planted in bold groups in a sunny, sheltered border. The flowers are produced for July until the first frosts, when the tubers should be lifted for over-wintering in a frost-free place.■ Garden care: Provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Once the first frosts have blackened the foliage, carefully lift and clean the tubers and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite. Store in a frost-free place, checking frequently over the winter months. Position: full sun ■Soil: fertile, humus-rich soil ■Rate of growth: average
■Flowering period: July to October ■Flower colour: dark maroon ■Other features: excellent cut-flowers ■Hardiness: half hardy

Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Prefers fertile, alkaline, somewhat gritty loams with good drainage. Plants may die out in the center if drainage is not superior. ‘Brilliant Star’ is reportedly a perpetual bloomer that will bloom spring to frost in cool summer climates, however it is not yet clear how this plant will respond to the heat and humidity of a St. Louis summer. Consider shearing off all spent flowering stems if bloom ceases in the heat of summer in order to tidy the planting and to promote additional bloom in late summer or early fall. Noteworthy Characteristics: Developed in England, the Star Series is a new group of hybrid dianthus cultivars derived from alpine dianthus. Star Series plants are clump-forming plants that are noted for compact growth, fragrant blooms, abundant flowering and lengthy bloom period. Narrow, lance-shaped, glaucous dark green leaves typically form a dense mounded cushion (to 5” tall). ‘Brilliant Star’ features pure white, fragrant (clove-scented), double flowers with dark magenta eye zones. Flowers bloom singly atop stems rising slightly above the foliage mound. Lenghty bloom period of spring to late summer and possibly to frost. Plant patent #13,025 issued October 1, 2002. Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Dianthus is generally susceptible to crown rot, particularly if grown in wet, poorly drained soils. Leaf spot may occur in humid summers, particularly where plants are crowded. Uses: Rock gardens, border fronts, edgings, fragrance gardens and containers. When massed, these mat-forming plants can form an attractive ground cover.

The Dianthus 'Miss Pinky', Dianthus Hybrid, has huge, deep salmon pink blooms that would be a flower-arranger’s delight. Their very compact habit and free blooming nature make the Miss Pinky' Dianthus a stand out both in container gardens and perennial borders. Dianthus will bloom from mid summer to early fall. In order for a longer bloom time, deadhead the blooms continuously throughout the summer. Dianthus needs a sunny site with well-drained soil, but will tolerate some shade in the afternoon and humidity. Perennial Sweet William
This variety of Sweet William is unlike any other which are all biennials. This is a true, long lived perennial discovered and test for 15 years by Plant Delights Nursery, Inc. in the United States. It has fabulous brilliant red-black carnation-like blooms from spring and throughout the summer. Deadhead for continuous blooms. Once gardeners discover this plant it will sure to be in high demand. Best grown in a sunny, well-drained location. I grew this in the garden last summer and it was amazing. It grew into a huge clump very quickly and rebloomed several times throughout the summer. NOTE: Do protect from winter wet which it hates! (12')
