CLOSED: Anyone recognize this Spider?

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

We came across this spider about 6 months ago. It had spun a huge web and I thought it was cool looking so I took it's picture :-) Thank God for zoom lenses! Know what it is? Thx!

The Golden Orb Weaver is also known as the Common Garden Spider and the Black and Yellow Argiope

I still have my first spider book I got over 30 years ago, & this guy was on the cover... a very photogenic fellow.

One of the most photographed critters in our BugFiles: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/69/

There's also an article link there in my description that tells a bit more about her.

Thanks Melody & Leo! How do you know it's a "her"? The one in my picture seems like it's body is a lot larger than most of those pictured in the bug files.

The males are tiny and dull colored. Only the females are brightly colored.

Her body gets 'fatter' as she is growing eggs inside. The 'skinny' ones are young, or have already laid their eggs.

Hmm, interesting. Thank you!

I wrote this a couple of years ago. It will tell you a great deal about her: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/216/
