My neighbor has graicously allowed me to harvest some of her morning glory seeds: they're huge and blue with hardly any other color in the middle. When I say blue I mean BRIGHT blue. I went to gather the pods (I'm no stranger to glories), and they looked like litle green pagodas. I've never seeen anything like it before. I picked one and squeezed it open, and the seeds were packed togther like an orange, but they were white and probably not ripe. They were longer than they were wide, and I have no idea when these will be done. Any clues? Is it a heavenly blue?
How I do get HEAVENLY BLUE?
Arrianna here is another thread about collecting morning glories http://davesgarden.com/showthread/92484.html
Hi Arrianna,
Some mg's have round pods and some point up and some hang down...I have noticed a distinct difference in the Heavenly blues for they point up and have a more slender pointed pod and will be ready to pick when the pods turn brown and dried... Let me know and I will send you a picture of some pods if you would like!
Cheers!
arrianna,
you send me your name and address, and I send you plenty of REALLY blue morning glory seeds (right now from last year, in 2 - 3 weeks from this year). That's how you get these seeds.
Dimitri
Heavenly Blues are such LATE seed-makers here in central PA that it is a lucky year when the seeds ripen before the first hard frost turns them to mush. Although I have a QUART of mixed morning glory seed harvested, the Heavenly Blues mixed in with them are few & far between so far, but they are just beginning to ripen here & I may start keeping them separate & hope our first frost is a late one. But even in a mixed seed pack, Heavenly Blue are easy to pick out, as they are larger & with a more pointed shape. It's a waste to try & harvest them before the outside gets papery; they just don't germinate. Isn't it nice that now that it's cooler they stay open most of the day??
Yeah, I've noticed that the glories are open later. Makes me mad that I can't get the seeds :) Is it possible to get the seeds while they're still white in the pod and then dry them? Would they still be viable?
No, they will not be viable unless they dry on the vine... Did the picture I sent you look like the pods on your neighbors vines?
