My 2 cents worth....
First off I wouldn't plant it and then dig up, to transplant again.
I think it would be fine living in the pot until fall. Gosh knows I've grow a ton of things in pots for the past 7 years. As long as they get the right amount of water, (not too much, not too little) I think they would be fine. I agree with Susan, don't cut any spears now. As soon as those tomatoes are done, I'd till and plant. You'll probably lose most of the fern then, but don't fret like Feldon30 said. "The root is the main plant" and the ferns die off first freeze. Come spring you'll get a few spears, but I wouldn't harvest any. Or maybe just one or 2, awfully tempting not to. All the books say not to until at least year 2. I waited until year 3.
My Pride & Joy! or "It's a Jungle Out There!"
Well said. I just always like things in the ground rather than pots, but listen to mel.
And yes I do not take spears till year 3.
Thanks so much for all the input. I'd rather have it in the ground too as I know it would be much happier there....I'm actually tempted to try and move the tomatoes. LOL.
Man oh man it's going to be tough to ignore those yummy little spears for 2 more years. *sigh* But I bow to your experience and will try to exercise extreme restraint.
NO!!! Do Not Move your tomatos! I DO KNOW THAT WILL NOT WORK.
I don't talk off the top of my head, if I don't know something I will not post. Tomatos do not take moving well at all. Just wait and plant the gus later. Gus is tough, it can take transplanting. Have you considered a raised bed for your gus? I love mine.
LOL 10-4 on leaving the tomatoes right were they are. I just love the people on DG....thanks for the big flashing warning Susan!
I'm hoping to get by without ripping up anymore ground. Ironically the spot I have the tomatoes planted is normally a pretty empty bed. I don't use many tomatoes so I have a deal with my dad. I start them, he grows them out at his place, then I help myself whenever I want. I ended up with more plants than he could handle so I stuck what was left in 'my new asparagus bed.' They're really just extras, but I hate to be wasteful.
If you have 3 extra mater plants planted and you have access to your dad's, well I might be tempted to rip one up and put the asparagus in. From the looks of your pot it would take about as much room as one of the tomatoes.
