No sir, how'd it taste?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Very very mild and Delicious
So far even burpless as well!!
I think the next one I pick,Ill mix with vinegar and red onions!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Did you start them in the GH? They appear to be a fast growing cucumber.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Looks like Poona Kheera, which is a fantastic golden cucumber which happens to come from Africa. ;)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

No,At one of the local nurseries,he always start a few seeds of things for people to try,and then get back with him in the fall and tell him what you thought of that plant, kind of like to a test garden for a local nursery.
It was just a couple inches high when I planted it,mid April already almost to the top of a tomato ring cage now, very fast grower, and a heavy producer, lots of flowers and little cukes on it now.

Here's a new pic.

Wow, I'd sure like the name of that so I can get some seeds...... Is it that Poona Kheera thing?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Wish I could tell you,but the birds or squirrels stole the tag!!!

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

hahaha of course. Well, good t o keep an eye out for tho, thanks for the "field report." ;-)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Anytime!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

This looks bigger and lighter than the Poona Kheera that I've grown, which tends to look almost like a fingerling potato. (It's one of my favorites that did not get into the garden this year. I had an interesting thing happen in the basement this season. The entire tray of cucumber seedlings grew big and lush - faster and fuller than usual. I checked them when I got home Friday pm and was beyond impressed. Saturday they started looking wilty, and by Monday morning every single one of them had died. I replanted seeds and forgot t put out the PK's. Bummer!)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

So sorry for you,do you think it was due to damping off?
This was the size of a medium sized bake potato.

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

Goodness! Want to ask your nursery source what it is? ;-)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I'll try to remember,,but they only had a couple for sale, apparently, they might had trouble getting them to germinate.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Whatever it was, it was fast and furious. Took out about a dozen cuke seedlings and 3 tomato babies, then that was the end of it. I almost had a heart attack when I saw the tomatoes which follwed a couple of days later. I was thinking - Lord have mercy - if this thing spreads, I could lose everything - then where would I be. Fortunately everything turned out fine and everyone is happily planted into the garden!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thats great, now let the fun begin!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, yeah!

What else are you growing?

PS - How'd Wichita become the tropics??? LOL! Every time I see your handle, I picture the scene in the Wizard of Oz we here Dorothy tells Toto she doesn't think they're in KS any more!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

From early spring to late fall the weather here is like the tropics, very high humidity and warm temperatures, you sweat just standing in the shade!!!!
There is always a slight breeze, like coming off the ocean, and the plants love it during these times, and I prefer growing them compared to growing the regular perrinals.
I do however grow just a few varieties of tomatoes and peppers.
When my folks were alive,I would plant a huge garden at there place as they had a large lot, were mine is rather small.
I have been growing bananas now for a few years and am getting fruit at least a couple times a year, and enjoy those home grown bananas very much.
With my greenhouses,I'm able to continue growing my tropicals year around.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh, how nice to have a GH! Do you have problems with aphids in there? My $#@^%% brugs have generated so many over the years that I finally had to give them up.

I would love to grow bananas. I wonder how they would do in my sunroom. Are the bug magnets???

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Here's how I grow my brugs,I too use to fight the spidermites with brugs, but now I cut all the leaves, dig them up out of the ground, place roots dirt and all in a plastic trash bag,let them go almost dormant, water every other month just a very little to keep it a live but not to grow leaves, sometimes I get a few leaves,I let them grow,as soon as I see bugs I remove the leaves,I store them in the garage.
I do the bananas the same way,but some I continue to grow in the sunroom.spray underside of leaves weekly with soapy water, keeps spider mites at bay.
You can just dig your bananas up and throw them under your house in the crawl space and forget them to spring and then replant outside again in April is when I do mine.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

That's encouraging. Next time I go to Logee's I know what I'm coming home with!!!

That's basically what I was doing with my brugs, but somehow, even in the dormant stage they maintained their aphid collect. In march I do my seed-starting upstairs, then I move all of the babies into the basement under the growlights. Alas - the aphids were SOOOOO happy to see all of the little seedlings that they decided to go over and welcome them! Little $%@^$#%@&'s wiped out all of the eggplant and most of the peppers before I realized what was happening. I was SO upset! The year before I tried overwintering them in the sunroom and wiped out half of my houseplants and my 2 very large tomatoes that i was experimenting with inside. Prior to that I'd never seen an aphid, so I had no idea what those green lumps were. (Not being Donna Domestic, I decided to ignore it! Very, VERY bad move!)

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Tell you a secret to overwinter plants inside,I get the complete granules scatter a little like a tablespoon full on top of the soil on all my containers, few weeks before I bring them inside for the winter, takes care of most of my bug problem.
I always spray the leaves of every plant I water throughout the summer,to keep bugs off the leaves as well.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the tip! I was thinking that a systemic would probably be the way to go with plants I bring in and out, so I will definitely give it a shot.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

It says on the package do not use on container plants, but I do anyway!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Does anyone know if this one will come true to seed?
This is the best I've tasted, and the best producer, usually after I get a half dozen cukes from a vine it stops and croaks, this one just keeps on ticking ,and I keep on picking like a Timex watch!!!!!!!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

If it is Poona Kheera, it should grow true to seed, depending on what else you've got growing in near proximity!

Your cuke growing sounds like mine, though I think we're the minority. I'm always hearing people say they get so many cukes from on plant that they are sick of them by the end of the season. I would be delighted to have such a problem!

My best producer to date was the Japanese Climbing which I grew last year.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I've never had that problem of growing cukes!
Well I'll save some seeds for next year!
Thanks

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm growing PK and if I let them get too brown the skin gets a really bitter taste. I thought they were from India. I'm also growing Thai Special but they are not producing near as well.
Lisa

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I pick mine as soon as I see the brown starting to develope.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

This cucumber is now on my list for next season. Thank you, it sounds wonderful!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

You wont be sorry!
Get some vadalia onions and some sweet red onions, with salt & pepper, sliced cukes in a bowl of apple cider vinegar, your dining in Hog heaven!!!!
Cook up a pot of brown pinto beans with some sweet cornbread, now thats 5 star dining!!!!!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Yum. Sounds perfect!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Dawng made myself hungry, and right before bedtime too!!!LOL
Well I'll have to settle for my banana!!!
Keeps the mosquitoes away!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I actually eat them right out of the garden. They are the only cucumber that I really enjoy eating plain. They kind of remind me of an apple, they have a crisp clean flavor.
Lisa

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Your like my wife she prefers them that way too,I can eat both ways, but with onions and vinegar,I fill like I'm getting much more flavor intense!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

The vinegar and onions gve me a stomach ache just thinking about it. They are a great cucumber to grow.
Lisa

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I guess its something you have to grow up with to enjoy!!LOL
But yes I do enjoy growing it!!!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I did grow up with it, my family is German and there was always a bowl of cucks and vinegar setting on the kitchen table, however now at almost 45 I no longer have a stomach like a goat. PK is the only cucumber that I really enjoy all by itself. I completely understand about it feeling like the tropics, that is how it is here then the freeze hits and everything has to come back in the house. Aren't PKs from India? Just wondering?
Lisa

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well the sign said Africa, and there was a newspaper article at the display that I read, maybe they grow them there to!
Hmm I'm Irish thought it was a Irish thingy!!!LOL
Well grandma was Dutch, and that was were had my first taste of them on her table back in the 50's,thats when you know your grown up you get to sit with the adults!!!LOL
Thats a funny story my moms side of the family, the adults ate first then the kids, and it was just the opposite on my dads side of the family, but then then my family always ate as a family, and I guess the stopped doing it that way in the 40's,I don't know if any other families during the depression ate that way or not, never asked anyone!
