How do you save seeds from pansies, if possible? I have some beautiful jersey giants, and would love to collect some seeds, but have absolutely no idea how. Any advice please. I don't even know where to look! New to this, obviously!
Pansy seed collecting?
It's rather easy to save seeds from pansies. After blooming, they will form seedpods. When the seedpods turned brown
and start to open is the best time to harvest them. Leave them for at least a week in an open paper bag to dry. You can directly sow them or store the seeds on a cool place (fridge).
Thanks! Always good to know when something is easy, as I have NO experience at this. Do I leave the blossoms on the plant to dry up or can i pick them when fading?
You must leave the blossoms on the plant, because they will form the seedpods. If you only want to collect seeds for yourselve, you can leave one plant for seed saving, the others you can deadhead, so you will have more flowers on those.
Thanks for the help. I will do just that, great idea, leaving one for seeds!
Do you have any other types of pansies around? If so, they probably became cross pollinated and the seeds won't be of that exact color.
Oh, gosh, never thought of that either. I don't have any other ones, but my mother has several different kinds, and she was saving a few for seeds also. She has several ones of different kinds mixed in the same pots, so it will be interesting to see what we get from those! Thanks!
I have an addiction in the spring time - as soon as the plants are put out for sale, I break myself to buy every single type they have, which, as everyone knows, violets and pansies usually come out first. All of the ones from last year that I saved seeds from and the volunteers that came up are awesome colors. Faded and mixed, I like them much better. Those are the seeds I have on my trade list right now, and I can't guarantee colors of any of them, lol!
