It is very encouraging to see the number of posts showing rescue animals and my wife and I are happy for each and every one of them. We would love to hear the story behind them and so are starting this thread.
To get things going I'll tell you about our current 3 dogs all of which are rescue.
Firstly there is Jack the pure bred wired haired fox terrier. He had a hard start and had been to 3 previous homes before we got him aged 9 months. He had been chained outside at his last home before being given up to the pound again. It was our local boarding kennel owner who suggested him to us after one of our dogs died. She had driven several hundred kilometers to fetch him and was looking for a good home. We decided to take him and we soon understood why he had not found a permanent home. It was a good job we had tile floors as he was not house trained, he barked at everything, did everything in his power to get his own way and was an accomplished escape artist. It took more than a year for him to settle in and realize he was not going to be sent away again and even longer before his house training became reliable. Now he is the most affectionate dog you could ask for but still has the terrier attitude. Unfortunately his bad luck did not stop as he contracted a fungal infection that spread throughout his system and resulted in deformed nails on one foot and a black discharge around his eyes and mouth. After 6 months of treatment the vet told us that he might never be completely cured but could not stay on the anti fungal drugs any longer as they would result in permanent internal organ damage. He said the infection was not contagious to our other dogs so we do our best to make his life comfortable and he gets along just fine although his foot does bother him a bit. Just recently we changed his diet to a completely grain free one and this seems to have reduced the fungal infection considerably.
Here is Jack enjoying a roll.
I'll talk about the other two dogs in separate post.
