Just did my first 'haircut' on the yellow and lavender mums growing in the yard yesterday, and it occurred to me I could maybe root them. Am I right in guessing they'd root easily? And is there a preferred method? Just stick 'em in water or go the soil and hormone route? I stripped down the cuttings and poked them into some water. They're sitting in my mini-greenhouse awaiting their fate. They haven't flagged at all, still perky and erect.

Can I root my mum trimmings?
Oh yes!! Go the soil and hormone route, if you have the hormone...if not just stick em in soil. Keep them somewhere shady either way.
If you don't have the hormone use cinamon. If you have a willow tree use the tanic water from the twigs.Let twigs soak about 48 Hrs.

I didn't know those two ways...thanks Mike!!!!
I think cinnamon is an anti-fungal, isn't it, Mike?
Melis, I've done about 5 or 6 six packs so far, with about 75% success. I think as it has gotten hotter in my gh the more they've struggled. They do seem to appreciate the mist over wet soil (it's just damp) and as 3-g mentioned, some protection from the sun. They're supposed to take 3-4 weeks to root, but (probably also due to the higher temps) mine seemed to root in about 2. Just make sure you trim down the leaves...
Rots a ruck!!!
Thanks muchly. Up to today the cuttings have been sitting in water on my shady porch--which is where my little 5 shelf 'greenhouse' is. Hopefully, that several day lag didn't hurt them?
Hopefully not - if they haven't started showing roots or are getting mushy, my best guess is that they'll be fine. The nice thing is that the mother plant will produce new shoots very quickly and I've read that the last time you should tip mum plants (for bushiness, anyway) is the 4th of July, so you have time to experiment.
Any luck?
