Not I, though I can't help but see a snowflake when I look at that! lovely pictures, btw!!

Hi Dabney and Tropicman, I just purchased two of the Gardenia jasminoides 'Frostproof'. If anyone can kill them I will, but I feel they will be just fine if my soil is o.k. I bought one for inside and one for outside. We will see. I will keep you posted when they arrive next week. They are to be hardy for Zone 6, so we will see. They take lots of moist, somewhat acidic soil and full to partial sun.
That is all I know about them so far. We can work on the survival of these together. LOL
Good luck. JB

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks Dabney

JB,sounds you know what it takes to keep them happy, please keep updated on progress.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

happy at last...i moved my 'Crown Jewels' into some shade a few days ago and after a month of holding it's breath, it's Finally opening some of those 1000 buds it had!

JB, you are a top notch greenthumb...I have full faith for your new gardenias! Yes, please keep us updated....everyone...I need constant gardenia pep talks!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Pictures please Dabney when the Crown is in full bloom. I want to count those 1000 buds. LOL
My thumb is not too good just now, I put my stock jasminum outside too early and some of them are just not happy. I am not sure what to do, or maybe what not to do. I think the quick changes in temps from extremely hot to very cold (30 and 40s) has taken a toll on them. I am going to try and keep them happy during the rest of the summer, feed them good and hopefully they will come back. If not, I must start all over again.

My gardenia tree has another bloom today. That is the 5th one and it is the size of the bottom of a coffee mug and smells sooooooooooo good. They only last a few days and then I pick them off and bring them inside and smell them until they look like a sick old brown bloom and so disgusting you just need to throw it away. I do get my enjoyment out of the odor while it lasts. LOL.

Bird cage cleaning time. Later. JB

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

I will work on getting pictures as I tend to pick them before they open all the way because I bought the plant to use for enfleuraging the blooms...but now that I look more closely, it has the outer 'star' petals of 'Froostproof' but is double with the inner petals.

Tropicman, how many diff varieties do you have!?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Please wave you hand over the bloom,so we might get a whiff of it;s lovely fragrance too!!!LOL

As soon as the mud bog aka back yard is walk-able...I will peek at my 'Frost Proof.' I know she was doing just fine through the winter but with all this rain and rapid growth of "unwanteds" back there I need to see how she's fairing. She was just a baby last year.
Despite some die back from this end of winter freeze - my 'Shooting Star' (I had to do some cutting back) is putting on some new healthy growth...whew!!!
The mystery Gardenia thought to have been 'Mystery' gardenia is sadly not showing any signs of life - I knew if she was truly that cultivar that I was "pushing the zone" but I figured putting her in close proximately to the brick front among other things might help her along. :( Moment of silence, please.
The 'Kleim's Hardy' is another with varying hardiness listings. I might try one more time with a larger plant. As much as I like Bluestone their babies aren't much more then babies and again I'm thinking that hard freeze (was for "us" at least) at winter's end did a few plants in.
Pleased to say the 'Chuck Hayes' is doing well and also putting on new growth. In all fairness he's located beside the brick wall as well so that may be why he did a tad better then 'Shooting star.' I purchased "Chuckie" 2 years ago so really hoping for some blooms this year.
There you have the Gardenia update in MY yard....

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

you know, I was just thinking it would be so nice to 'take a picture' of fragrance...but that's what I hope to do with the enfluerage. I took some pics this morning but the light was too bright so I will wait for early evening when it's softer...and that way the flowers will be more open.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

I knew you had a line-up, Chantell but wowwhee! You know you can't mention those without pictures...!

Gardenia/Jasmine need their own forum.

LOL - not on "this" computer - here's the photo links I uploaded last couple of years to plantfiles, though:

thank you for doing that!!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Meant to add - JB, kudos to you with those gardenia tree blooms. Post pics so we can figure out which cultivar these gals are, please? As with any of mine...when I bought her and and her inside (too cold out at that point) she promptly began to die...I kid you not. I put her out as soon as I thought do-able - ended up pruning the heck out of her and now she's producing healthy growth. I took a "before" pic and will wait a few weeks and take another. So sad what my house does to these pretties!!! :(

The leaves are larger, like my first love!
Do you use epson salt to help keep the leaves green?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

No, but I would like to start doing that. What is the mix rate? I have heard it helps and I thought it may help the one jasminum I have that is turning yellow. I use iron but that is not doing it and it is expensive to keep using it. JB

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I use a 16oz spray bottle, with a tablespoon Epsom salt,b ut when I'm in a hurry I just sprinkle a teaspoon full around the base of the plant, out to the drip line,it doesn't work as fast as spraying does.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Do you spray the mixture on the leaves or the soil?JB

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

JB - that last photo is wonderful!!! & 2) you spray it on the leaves

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks. I am trying to update my journal , etc. This should be good I am not sure I remember how to get to what I want. LOL

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Spray on the leaves, gets faster results , sprinkling it on the soil gives a long lasting effect on them, why I don't know, other than it is taken up in the roots and distributed with the chlorophyll.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

RIP - worked in the backyard last night...she's no where to be found...will try again with this one though.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Such a pretty girl...is that your Frostproof?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

yep,I'm the proud daddy!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Have mercy she's huge - what size was she when you were blessed with her? And you said the fragrance wasn't as strong as the others?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I bought her early spring from ace hardware, she was about half that size, really been feeding her, weekly with miracle grow plant food, and acid miracle grow as well, plus a few doses of Epsom salt, yes the fragrance is not as over whelming as some of the others I have, but when you get this many blooms at one time,it is heavy with fragrance now!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow...I'm truly impressed!! Love the shape of her bloom...guess I'll be going ISO of getting another one!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes it was a great $12.00 spent, they had 3 should have bought them all !

Greensboro, NC(Zone 8a)

she is lovely indeed! I have noticed the fragrance of my Crown Jewel is softer than from the big 'old fashioned' (?) ones, which can be cloying up close. I guess that comes from playing in the gene pool. Yes, you should have bought all three!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Mercy...I wouldn't sent you the money plus postage to get a decent sized one.... :(

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I'm sorry I miss informed you.I went outside to check,it was only$9.99 not $12.
And was received from Hines Nursery,Irvine California.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

$9.99....ok now I'm going to cry...give me a moment - sniffle, sniffle.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

It is pouring here just now. Has been for at least 20 minutes, a solid downpour and my plants are looking really upset. It is a heavy downpour and just will not quit. We have Direct TV and that has gone out because the signal is gone with the rain. WAAAAA!
This stupid weather is beginning to get to me. I never have been so frustrated. Oh well, I guess I will have a glass of wine. JB

Oh God, one of the big Air Force planes is landing in this .... I hope it misses our silo. Yikes.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Crazy weather huh, JBerger??

I had 2 Gardenia fragrant pathways, only one survived and then I started to do some research. I dug it up and potted it up to overwinter in the house about 2 weeks before I was going to put it back outside this year I had my very first bloom...YAY!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Great going. I got those scented geraniums early this year, about 26 of them and they were tiny cuttings. You should see them now, outside in 6" pots, all this rain, they love it.
I can not wait to smell all their scents. It is so exciting. I got them all added to my journal finally. I still have a long way to go to catch up.
That rain came from the Ocean and it was not a squawl. It did not even rain North of I95 where my SUL works. He was hoping it would rain for the sake of the Nursery stock.
Stay dry if it comes your way. JB

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Purty purty Jen

Jb we had that rain lastnite ,with winds and hail, some tree branches ripped off, blew over my umbrella and chairs, lots of lightning and thunder, keep an eye to the sky this time of the year!
