Found this insect on a potato plant in the garden. It has orange spikes on its abdomen. It's about 4 cm long.

It's a ladybug (beetle) larva, probably Harmonia axyridis:

I am so glad to see this - glad you posted it orangespike and grateful for your ID claypa. I saw one on my Butterfly weed and thought that was a ladybug 'baby' but appreciate the closure.
