CLOSED: Spider ID, please help

Lyndonville, NY

This eeerie looking dude was hanging out on our back porch, and DH was a little freaked out by him. DH almost lost his arm to a brown recluse 10 years ago...so he is not a fan of spiders.

Do you have any idea what type of spider this is? We live in Upstate NY. I did a search and am thinking it is in the jumping spider family. I really do not like the evil looking face on his back.

It appears there is a nest between slats in the back of our house...and if it is of the poison natures...I would like a heads up.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Debbie

This is indeed a jumping spider (family Salticidae); namely Phidippus audax, one of the commonest (and largest) jumping spider in much of the USA. We periodically find one in our mailbox! Like nearly all spiders, it is venomous, but is not dangerous to humans. Large specimens can inflict a painful bite, however. See http://tinyurl.com/4lzkl for much more information.

Thank you so much. I figure better to know than not, especially after my husbands previous incident with the brown recluse.

This guy seems so friendly, like he wanted to have a coversation, turned and looked at me.

They do seem to have a sense of curiosity. Several years ago, I had one keep 'hopping' closer to watch me while I was working in the garden - I periodically had to shoo it away so I wouldn't accidentally goosh it.

Do they have a favorite food in the garden, or whatever's available?

I'm assuming that this little guy is in the same family . . .

His bottom end looks different to me, I would have to see the back. This guy wasn't in our garden, but up on the back porch, trying to get in the back door it looked like.

That is an awesome photo.
