rooting azaleas?

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

A friend of mine has a very nice azalea bush and I have not been able to find the same in stores anywhere. I can get cuttings from her, but don't know how to root them successfully - tried and failed.

Can anybody give me some advice on the best time of year to do it? I think I did it about this time last year, but it didn't work. Or maybe I just didn't do it correctly :-(

Thank you.

Thank you for the link Jen. I will try again this year.

You might try a small rooter pot.
I bought 120 of them.
You wound the limb, clamp the pot with medium on the limb, keep the resevoir full of water and watch for roots.
When the roots fill the pot you cut the limb below the roots thus having a rooted cutting in a more advanced state than putting a cutting in a misting bed.
This is the first year for me using the rooting pots, but they do work.

Wow! Never heard of such thing! If it works well, I probably can also use it to root a Japanese maple! Thank you for the tip!

capt44, could you tell me where you purchased the rooting pots? Sound like a great way to propagate. Thanks!

I've used the rooting pots (for air layering). I bought mine at Lee Valley http://tinyurl.com/qp7h9o
They're nice, but honestly you can accomplish the same thing by wrapping with plastic and then overwrapping with foil.

That is the coolest thing I've seen!
