Chicken Keeping 101

Richmond, TX

Somehow I had this wild image of the chicken in a bag (head out) with Sevin dust - sort of like shake-and-bake!

You don't have to dust the whole chicken just turn it butt up and sprinkle some on the vent feathers then just a little under the wings.
I use permethrin dust it's less toxic than sevin i get it at tractor supply it comes in a shaker container cost about $6
I been doing mine this way for years when i find the little buggers on my birds and it takes care of them.

Hey Jenks would your daughter like a little white bunny?

Harmony!!! Yay! Chickenville!!! LOL

Honestly? If I get any more animals I really may be single again. I'm saving that move. ;)

Oh but my Rabbit only had 2 babys one i'm keeping and the other i would love to see go to a good home.

The baby won't be ready for about 2 weeks or more it's "cute" Pure white with a smut nose and blue eyes.
Please think about it i know it would have a good home with you and your daughter.
If you say no i will understand my hubby told me just the other day " don't you think you have enough pigeons"
Why would he say that i only got like 50 or so?????? ;o)

My permethrin dust comes in a large tube-like container that has a shaker top on it (with holes, like parmesan cheese). I put on latex gloves (I buy them by the box from the farm store, they are useful for all sorts of things) and I go out in the evening when the chickens are roosting. I take them into the barn (where the light is on) and put them on my lap. Like Harmony said, I hold them on my lap such that their vent is facing me, I part the feathers with one hand, and shake the dust on with the other. Then I sort of use my hands to rub it in-and-around the vent area feathers. I think that enough of it gets to the skin area that it's very effective. I do the same under the wings, then flip them over and do the neck area in the same way.

I haven't seen any yet....will check tomorrow.....

On feeders: I have the long type, and the round type with the container (I use a quart jar now but used a small canning jar at first) on top. Must say that the round one is a hit. They don't poop in it, and the food seems to stay more fresh? Somehow they prefer it to the long one.

I also heard that to use a dish or pan can cause splayed legs in chicks......I used one of my Chihuahua's food bowls the first week, but it was raised? They pooed in it so I went and tried every feeder I could find. I think I will always buy the round ones from now on.

how much should they be eating? They are eating more than a quart jar full per day now & are outside eating grass and bugs as well..... 6 teenage chickens.

O. And, if anyone wants him? My roo fugazi? Is for free. He's not mean, but I can't take the thought of eating fertilized eggs now.....ridiculous I know, but....If not, I'm turning him out in the paddock and keeping the pullets in the run.

Hey Jenks you may want to try a reel feeder or one of those plastic ones now that they are older it holds more and they can get to it easier.
I use the large hanging kind for mine i don't have to fill it up as often as the small ones.

They sell them at tractor supply or you could get one at the family farm store.

Oh far as how much feed they eat alot all the time. LOL

If you can't find anyone to take your roo give me a call and i will come get him and find him one.
