Mmmm!
Love that fragrance!
August Gardenia
Ok...spill it ^_^ ....how do you over winter those pretties INdoors?
yes, many of us would like to know!
As much sunlight as possible, keep a small running fan on them, little epson salt, every other month,oh heck,a lot of praying too!!!LOL
thank you! that helps a lot...at what temp do they hang out in? in your house, proper? i have an unheated greenhouse that last year my lemon tree thrived in.
If your lemon tree thrived in it,you can bet the gardenia will do as well!
There pretty much hardy to 32*,before they start to drop any leaves.
I'm sitting here in utter amazement!!! I've tried and tried - they live fine (the cold hardy ones) outdoors - but dang if I can over winter the tender ones successfully!!
They need the sunlight, not much watering, they will drop a lot of leaves, and goood air circulation.
I just bought one called frost proof, and it says hardy to zone 7,it's loaded with flower buds,so I can't plant it now, afraid it would drop all those flower buds.
Planted that one out back last year - just a baby though...should probably check and see if she made it....I have Shooting Star and Chuck Hayes in my front yard...both are putting on new growth now.
I haven't seen those varieties around here yet,but will be looking for them.
http://www.gawalternursery.com/hardy_exotics_list.htm Plants aren't huge but are healthy - good prices too!
Thanks,Ill check it out.
i bought a 'crown of jewels' (is that what is was Chantell?) about a month ago and there was not one half inch of it that didn't have a bud on it...they must have hyped it up on something...and i planted it out...didn't know not to. It didn't drop anything but stayed in 'pause' mode for many weeks...the first bloom opened a few days ago. AHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh
i see you are stressing the air circulation and i will pay attention! thanks
Yes, I think THIS is the perfect excuse to finally have a MOTHER of all ceiling fans put in the living room aka my greenhouse...LOL. Hmmm, Dabney why can't I remember what you got????? Did we discuss it in dmail or in a thread????
both, i think..i'll go look
Crown Jewel..it's on the other gardenia thread by woodspirit...
OMG....now how could I forget THAT....mercy!!
it's called fragrance on the brain, Chantell! :)
Oh and I'm having lots of that to enjoy now - esp. at night. My 'Fragrant Cloud' nicotiana is in bloom...and can i say it is MY favorite annual scent?
how in the world did you get that so soon?
Dabney - are you talking about the Nicotiana blooms? If so my friend had placed a sizable order thru Graceful Gardens, I believe - she knows I adore those and ordered some extras for me. They were in 2-3" pots...just potted them right away and whhaaa-laaa!! Happy to share seeds with you when I can gather some up for you.
thank you Chantell, i have seeds that i planted this spring and the leaves are about a half inch big by now!!! which is why i wondered how yours were blooming already! sniff for me..
my florist cyclamen doesn't want to stop! not that I mind as it has a lovely haunting scent...but aren't they supposed to go dormant about now?
and just to stay on topic :) i'm getting another gardenia bloom!
YOU give the best ideas - things I've never heard of or thought of for scent - "florist cyclamen" - hmmm....gonna have to google that one. Most of "us" (DGers) don't give a rat's patootie about OT conversations...seriously. But it's TM's thread so I shouldn't speak for him...LOL
Not a problem here!!!
It's for everybody who gardens!!!
Where do y'all buy your gardenia's from? I'm here listening to you go on about the fragrance and now I want some too! lol
Darla
local nurseries for me....
The August Gardenia is common enough that even our Walmarts carry them...as do the Home Depots and Lowes.
Same here as the others, but they don't buy in very large quantities,so here you have to be there when they get them they go so fast!
Thanks
mine has been looking a little bit sad lately and as i go back and read about them, they like temps around 74 (seems to be the magic number) how in the world do folks in zones 8 and 9 grow them?!
Very good question, been in the 90's here last few days and mine haven't been happy with that!
then maybe it's not just me! i moved mine into the shade. i recently put it back in a pot, i don't think i planted it in a very good spot...the roots were staying soggy, which it told me by way of yellow leaves. Fussy! but not dead yet!
I have a gardenia that I had put in the front yard near the base of the foundation. Its east facing and in the shade once the sun gets high enough. The leaves turned yellow, so thinking I was going to loose it I dug it back up and potted it and placed in on my back patio under the porch. It totally lost its leave and put out some buds. one of them bloomed and its starting to put out leaves, Its really pathetic looking. I hope it gets better soon!

They like to be kept slightly moist at all times, and need acidic soil, like morning sun, afternoon shade.
This my Gardena Taitensis when it was a baby. It has not bloomed since last fall. I put it outside and it got cold, but inside the GH it turned a yellowish and so I thought it needed more sun. (Had the shade on early) I gave it iron, sun and it is now looking like it wants to come back. It is now a foot tall and looks like a tree. Some people call them the Tahitian Gardenia I think.
I must get to work. I will be back later. I could spend all day talking gardenias and Jasminum. JB
JB - I'm so jealous!! Was given one last year...did splendidly while out and then...yup you guessed brought her indoors and she died a not so slow death. Wish I knew what does it to mine indoors
I am trying to figure if it likes water or being dry between watering. In the GH I keep those who do not lilke the daily misting or watering, whatever the little thing on the wall says they need, and on the other side I keep the plants that need alot of attention, etc.
But, I have moved that darn TGardinia all over the place and it still will not bloom again.
You know you have been doing this too long when you start having conversations with certain plants. Of course we all do it, except, someday I know one will talk back. I do have one that I can almost hear......really!!!!!!JB
I was thinking of buying one off e-bay,but if it is harder to grow,I'd better do some more thinking!!!
Definitely thrives in the heat and humidity - which is probably why she did so well last summer outdoors. I never did get a bloom...that might have been the plant's age though. I know the "stuff" that horseshoe suggested with my first Gardenia was: Epsom & Hollytone. My 'Shooting Star' did amazingly well once I started her on those. I was so afraid after killing so many....but she was my 1st in the ground Gardenia.
ok, I have been meaning to ask what the Epsom salt does....I know I've read it but it hasn't stuck.
