Gardening with Texas Native Plants & Wildflowers, part 18

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I scrambled Saturday.....rolling down all the ends and sides of my greenhouse....fixing them in place (despite the wind! ugh!)
getting my heaters back out and set......oh what we do for our plants! Ironically,...it only got down to about 35 Sat nite & 37 last nite
Better safe than sorry, huh?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Absolutely! it would be such a shame to lose those plants you have been babying for such a long time.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I understand. In spring, each time you have to protect plants, it wears your patience down. We didn't quite get to freezing last night....now the warm-up comes. I'll have to get the plants I brought inside back out...already uncovered the covered ones! The first hummingbird I've spotted visited yesterday.

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

Well.. I hope that is it for the cold!!! My veggie seedlings are getting lanky & I am afraid to plant them.. I was able to bring in as much as I could & I scrambled Sat. morning to put frost cloth on all I could.. I won't know if there's any that died until things get going. I may have lost one of my blueberry bushes, as I could not carry that in so i wrapped it well with frostcloth.
Frostweed... where is that plant swap in Arlington? I have a friend that may want to go as well. If we can.
This year along with my butterfly garden I am going to try to attract honey bees as well...as they are in trouble as much as the butterflies.
Linda... I hope the hummingbirds come here.. I've got my feeder out!!!! My garden also attracts a few hummingbirds.. at least they came last year..for the first time!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello Cindy, here is a link with the info

I hope you and your friend can make it. Please go and sign up.
Josephine.

The hummer was on my Carolina Jessamine. We don't get a lot, but one family always stays around for the summer, so that family are warm-season residents here. Such a joy to listen to them and watch them!

This pretty little Bloodroot showed up today..and another on the way! I got the rootlets last fall from a DG member, loess_roots, and planted them and they are coming up! Yay I am so very excited!

Just wanted to share in case anyone is interested can contact loess_roots. He also has rootlets of Mayapple, Black Cohosh, seeds of Goldenrod and some other forest plant rootlets and/or seeds....

The cute little pussytoes are back! Did your seeds come up Josephine?

I am sorry to say they did not do well, they are very cute.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I was very pleased to obtain a Texas Azalea (Rhododendron oblongifolium) and a Texas Tuberose (Manfreda variegata) yesterday at the Mercer Arboretum plant sale....ohhhh,...I could've easily spent hundreds (if not thousands)...there were so many beautiful plants. I also bought a Crinum x Sangria....which is an "honorary Texan" plant now (smile). I had to make myself leave...
there was tooooooo much temptation to get other plants...I didn't really need,,,,,,,"need" being the keyword...;cause the "desire" was definitely there!

Allwild - does loess_roots want trades or will ship for postage?

North, TX

Willis~ I got mine for shipping and it was very reasonable and everything arrived in such wonderful shape... I really felt like I should have owed more money!!!
It sounds like you had too much fun at the Mercer Arboretum plant sale. I used to go there often and wander around when I lived in Spring, Tx and just happened to be there on the day of their sale, no really! it was by accident they just started wheeling out carts of beautiful plants! Unfortunately, or fortunately I didn't have my wallet with me! I know exactly what you are saying!

I'm sorry to hear that Josephine, we will have to try again this year!!

I am running out of room!!! and I mean with space... never mind in the garden!! hahahaha
I just recently purchased an Angel Trumpet..which we saw in a Mississippi Botanic garden last year & just wanted one so bad! So.. when I saw it the other day I grabbed it!! hahahaha. Now.. I have to buy another container for it & find somewhere around the home to plant it! hahaha.
My other wish for this year is to get a Mondara (Bee Balm).. but I want the one that has just come "out"...the Monarda Didyma "ACmum" Grand Mum... but I am having a hard time getting it close to home!!!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sometimes it is hard to find those hybrids, the Angel trumpet you should be able to grow outside in the summer and bring it in for the winter.

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

Josephine.. yes I could bring it inside, however the container is going to be sooo large I won't be able to get it in.. & I don't have any room inside for it.. nor a big shed or other covering. I was debating at putting it on our deck then place the container on wheels...but it still may not be movable... but maybe a better shelter. I am still thinking about it.hahahaha

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It might survive for you outside since it is in a large pot, you could mulch the top of the pot and wrap the stem with frost cloth for the winter, many of the survive at least to the roots, if nothing else.

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes.. that is what I thought too.. I did that to most of mine this past winter... only one died from being in a container. I consider that pretty good..however.. with the snow we had March 20th I may have lost one of my blueberry bushes, as they are newly planted.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I just love these every spring! Texas Gold Columbine...looking good! It's been pretty dry for the last month. All that rain we had before...now we could use some of that.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I love the columbines too, mine are blooming now as well, the yellow and the red, I can't decide which one i like better, they are both beautiful.

North, TX

How pretty! this winter, I received seeds of yellow columbine from a DG member and planted them.

Linda, do you have a pic of the foliage? ^_^ I'm wondering if any is growing.......

I finally took a decent pic of Spring Beauty, so you can see the stripes.

Well, I don't know how well you can see the foliage in this shot, but here's more of the plant!

Thank you Linda, that helps because now I know what the leaves look like... I don't have any flowers growing but thought maybe the plant has sprouted.

It kinda looks like these leaves but not really....

Violets in the woods.

Those violets are precious.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

These Cedar Sage are looking real good now! The rain seems to be pretty much over for a while...a good thing, we sure don't want floods causing problems.

Linda,
How much sun are the cedar sage getting? Mine didn't bloom for very long last year (their first) and seemed sort of stunted. I have read they need partial to full shade to perform well.
Cheryl

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Some afternoon sun, otherwise filtered sun to shade.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Cedar sage is so pretty!! I love it!!!

North, TX

Those are such pretty blooms!

The coral honeysuckle is blooming now. It mostly grows in shady places, beneath the trees, climbing on the understory plants.

It's very pretty too. I have one partly shady area that always retains moisture, so some shade loving natives don't like it there. I am redoing it and will probably plant some more sun tolerant hostas. What other natives like a little shade and water retaining, somewhat heavy soil?
C

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

If it is a vine you want you could try Crossvine, or for a shrub Turks cap.

North, TX

these phlox also seem to like the moist shade

I really think the crossvine is so pretty I would like to plant some too! It's on the list LOL!

The coral vine grows very slow here and is very tame I have noticed over the past couple of years it shows up in the exact same spots.

The salvia lyrata is another that likes the moist shady areas. It seems to spread more quickly but I like it. This is a closeup pic.. it gets about one foot high.

The area is small and will get smaller as I need to put in a paver area because of water from the eaves. I have a turks cap there but its too large so it is getting moved. Looking for a few smaller plants to try. The cedar sage does not like being that wet so it is out.
Allwild I think that phlox is phlox pilosa. It looks like mine. There seems to be variation in the leaves, maybe due to growing conditions.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

In that case you could try Heartleaf Skullcap;

or Texas Betony, they are both very nice.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a heartleaf skullcap available for the upcoming RU, if you are interested.

Arlington, TX

dennis, aren't you already trading me a heartleaf scullcap for a phlox pilosa?
Cheryl

North, TX

Yes, I'm pretty sure mine is phlox pilosa too.

This one grows on the shadier side of the pond here, called Blue waterleaf, False fiddleleaf - Hydrolea ovata.

This is a better picture than mine ~ http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/21307/

Fwiw, I've got a small damp/muddy-ish heavy soil area that we need to be able to walk through. I've just about decided instead of pavers, which would make the planting area very small, to do sort of a flat bridge.

We had just stuck a couple of pallets over there to see us through the wet winter, but it's starting to seem pretty viable to just do a nicer version, which will let the plants still have the full growing area of soil. I'll probably dig it out a little and amend the soil with some compost and a little decomposed granite, for somewhat less water retention (but it will still be standing on the clay-ier soil).

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

Cheryl, you are right. I should have checked my list. :)

I have an extra one that nobody has requested if you would like two.

Arlington, TX

dennis I would love to have 2, is there anything on my list I can give you for it?
