all nice... shame with the weather ... those coleus should be 3 times bigger by now

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

absolutly and the slugs dont help either.
I'll put tubs somewhere else next year

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes that is true... they are all over this year

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They love itwet.
Its not light enough to take pix but I can see the Starling in bloom. Its a DL thats been in 2 years.
My trumpets are opening too.
I have 1 that is miss labled and went on B&D to see which it really was and their selection is really short.
I dont know what happened to them considering their catalogue is due out soon.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

My camera is in NYC with my son till tomorrow. I have coleus in contaners that I bought from the markdown rack at K-mart interplanted with other plants from the markdown rack at Lowe's. I have a rose blooming that I got for 3 dollars.
One, where did you get the mini evergreens? Lovely coleus. I was just out at the trial gardens at Massachusetts Horticultural society today and they had some beautiful coleus in pots. also gorgeous colors of calibrachoa and an outstanding collection of scented geraniums also in pots. great stuff! The weather here has not been too kind to annuals, especially the kind that love the sun. my geraniums are doing well however. Most are in bloom. I will take some pictures when my camera gets home.

Lots of great containers, everyone. This is the first year I haven't grown Coleus. I gave up because they would get shredded by slugs or earwigs. I tried to simplify my life this year by putting only one or two things in my pots...I have one mixed container I'll post later if that one ever gets going. Like everyone else, the rain really did a number on many of them.

This one is Plaza Roulette Begonia with Pilea 'Aquamarine'..in the lower pot is Begonia 'Dark Mambo'. I bring that one in for the winter and it does fine in the house.

This is an experiment for me- I am going to try to leave this hosta in the container thru the winter and see what happens. I think I will cover the top with a board so that it doesn't get too wet, though.

Slugs are ruining my containers too, there are 2 favorites for them and both contain light yellow coleus.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my light green kongs are destroyed as well

very nice contaniers Noreaster!!.. I have had some hostas in containers for a few years... they do just fine

loving this Double Cascade Orchid Mist from seed

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oops picture would be nice

beautiful Onewish

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Noreaster, what are your containers made out of? They look very sturdy. My containers explode and disintegrate during the winter because I am too lazy to bring them all inside.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Some other flowers in these containers simply died due to all that rain but sturdy Petunias, though beaten up, came back, You can see the Bacopa barely made it in one.

Every one containers shown here are just great

That's beautiful, Maria. I'm trying petunias for the first time this year in my ONE sunny place. Actually, I'm trying a few herbs and things on the deck, too, which is the only true full sun place in my whole yard. I don't know anything about plants for sun. Am I supposed to pinch them or cut them back or anything?

Carrie, those are hypertufa containers that I made a few years ago. ( a blend of portland cement, peat, sand, and perlite. I leave them out all winter because I too am too lazy to bring my pots in. I have some damaged terracotta and ceramic ones as a result. Glad to hear you've had success with hosta in pots, onewish. I'm pretty much out of room in the garden so I either have to do that or give them away.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

I don't do seeds much too difficult for me since I do not have a green house so I buy petunias from the Nursery always get PW(Proven Winners), they tell you one does not have to pinch them back. I find they do well with a small amount of sunshine and love to be fertilized, I use Miracle Grow about once a week or more.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Same here,Proven Winners are great,my coleus are suffering in the cool nights so my containers arent as lush and full as I had hoped.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

The Coleus I purchased from the Rosy Dawn Co-op finally took off. Normally by this time, they are flowering like crazy. The part that makes me wince is that I only saved $.30 per plant compared to buying them at my favourite nursery.
The Proven Winners' petunias are awesome! Their performance has exceeded my expectations - even last year when we had our crappy summer.
I want to know where I can order a Proven Winners Summer!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

...and it is not just the petunias that are awesome, what ever
PW has is simply near perfection, their Zinnias, their Snapdragons and on and on, I also buy other growers just to compare, well, they don't

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I have some Zinnias, too. Still a bit juvenile, but healthy. I have not seen their Snaps, but I will be looking & asking!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Want you do see containers from my friend who lives in WA

Thumbnail by Maria
Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Maria - is this your friend that lives near/in Bellingham? Healthy Geraniums! We've had a better summer than last year, but Spring sure lasted too long. So did winter, now that I think about it.

"Kent Beauty' oregano with coleus.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Yes, Katje, he and his wife are my very best friends, have visited them often and they have visited my, On DG he is know as eweed. Lately he has been complaining how hot it is, said he is not used to it like I am here in MA

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Portion of a large mixed container. I leave for work at 6:30 am and too rushed to spend time getting morning shots. Most of my property gets sun from 7 until sunset. The afternoon sun is too harsh - the morning pictures seem to have more depth. This has Callies, Petunias, Scaevola, Salvias, Helichrysum and Osteospermum.

Maria - they tend to get socked in with heat up in that area of WA. I think it's due to the configuration of the mountains & adjacent coast, plus the marine influence pushes the heat north from here. I am on a plateau, and exposed to wind/breezes every day, so this area can be cooler. However - that is not the operative word today! It is 7:25 right now: 91° with a very warm wind. More of the same tomorrow. I will watch the tomatoes grow.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Just beautiful Katye.
When ever I have visited them it always seems very cool to me but I guess this year we have it cool and you have it much warmer

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Yes - you do!
I was very surprised at how your weather has unfolded this year. I truly empathize with you as our summers seem to turn out cool & wet too often, so I understand the effect of excess rain + cool temperatures on the plants & the gardener! Having winter hit hard took its toll on many plants. We just do not receive enough snow to create an insulatory layer for them. Freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw. I lost many plants in the newer areas I had developed, which hurt the wallet. But still, I cannot complain loudly as the NE has had extremes from winter up to the present. Makes me appreciate what you all contend with, and what I do have.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Maria I too love the PW petunias .... even though I grow mine from seed ... I still buy a few of those.. can't beat em.. even though they say you don't need to dead head.. I still do

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Onewish - do you grow the heirloom petunias? I was wondering how they compare to the modern types in terms of habit & growth (especially this year!) The older types seem to have a more pronounced fragrance, but I'm not sure about vigor. Even though I am in Z7, our maritime climate keeps us on the cool side. I think the Petunias might perform better with your summers.
Deadheading - can't help it, I do it anyway despite what they say.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

every one of them are slow slow slow... the only one doing pretty well are the prism sunshine ... the ones doing the worst this year is the primetime stars... last year they were outstanding though... another usual fav is tidal wave silver... not going to lie but I wouldn't know heirloom or not... unless the description actually said it.. but I do have a few that smell really nice

not sure if you can search my journal and just put in petunia or not... but here is the list I grew this year

http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/vbc/onewish1/72348/

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

onewish, I am impressed with your journal

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

yes - search by cntrl+f & search petunia.
The heirloom types are typically smaller & not so showy. But the fragrance is lovely. I really like the Prism Sunshine - I'll try that one next year. Love yellow......

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thank you Maria....

I will have to look some up Katye... I wouldn't have even thought to search that way ... very good!!
