Squash production?

Denton, TX(Zone 8a)

Anyone's squash producing? All my blooms are falling off without setting fruit (yellow crookneck squash). Where are my darned bees? Am I going to have to hand pollinate if I want any squash?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Carlo ~ don't be too upset. Some squash blooms are male and some female. They both have to be open at the same time to pollinate. Until the first male flowers bloom, the female blooms and little squashes will drop off. Later on when they both flower together, you will start setting squash. More than you can consume as is usually the case. This is the case with all winter or summer squash I believe. My spaghetti and Peter Pan squash went thru the same thing. Both are setting squash now. Be patient... lol

I'm having the same problem. Out of two plants that have been blooming prolifically, I've gotten only 1 squash, but I did see another one today. I think the fluctuating weather, rain, clouds, cool temps have something to do with it. The last week or so of nice, consistent weather has been great for the plants. My problem is that the boys and girls aren't showing up for the party at the same time, or if they do, they're afraid to commingle! LOL

Here's the baby squash I found today.

I would like to grow a yellow crookneck squash but I missed the boat this spring. Is it possible to grow this in late summer or fall?

What about an acorn squash?

John, here's a chart for your area for vegetable planting dates. Yellow squash is a summer squash and acorn is a winter squash.

This site also has some awesome information. Wish we had something this extensive for Tarrant County!

Be sure to check out the fall vegetable guide, too.

if you lived closer I could share all you want! I have 6 or 7 plants and they are very prolific. we are eating squash every day and I am giving bags of it away.

Ack! Last week I noticed that I had a few girls out there (I'd mainly seen boys until now). This weekend when I checked, lo and behold, it's not a yellow crookneck but something else entirely. I hope to post pictures tonight. My plants are volunteers, and had I been thinking, I would have known they wouldn't come up true, but I didn't think that there was anything around for them to cross with. But they look like little yellow pumpkins instead of squash.

I don't know what to do now except pull them all up. I can't imagine they'd be particularly edible.

Certainly looks like a pumpkin, but I don't think it would be that color. I vote for keeping it and seeing what it turns out to be.

Yayyy!! Now the males' and females' flowers just have to open on the same day and the females have to get pollinated.
