It's about an inch long with a brown shell and black head. It's swimming around in a bucket of water in my back garden. Sorry that the picture isn't very sharp.

More info. I've removed it from the water and it looks like some kind of beetle. Six legs and two feelers at the front.
This is indeed a beetle; it appears to be in the family Scarabaeidae, which includes chafers and the like. Beetles such as these often wind up stranded in containers such as in your case.
