Big Mama RIP 5/22/09

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I am so sad. I have been looking for Big Mama all day and did not find her until a few minutes ago. She got herself wedged under the plant shelf in the top of the falls and I guess got stuck. She has gone over the raindow bridge to the big pond in the sky. I am home alone and it is getting dark and I can not get her out by myself. I need someone to lift the self while I retrieve her for burial. I am gonna cry!

Here is her final picture taken yesterday. Please say a little prayer for her good soul!. She will be missed!

I'm sorry your amphibious friend is gone. I hope help arrived soon so you could get her extricated from the plant shelf.

Beahive,

There are no words...I am so sorry. I know how very much you loved having her in your pond, just as all of us enjoyed that you could share her with us.

Hugs sent your way.......

Beahive - I'm so so sorry about your friend big Mama. We will miss her as well.

Well, help got home late and is still asleep. My little friend is still waiting for a decent burial. I was hoping she was playing dead and I would see her this morning. No such luck. She is still stuck and it is really time to get her out of there. Ahhh. it will be so aweful! :(

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I am so sorry for you and MaMa frog. That news tugged my heart strings.

Bea, what a loss in all of our lives! I can feel your pain. I remember crying when a single one of my tropical fish died, and they were not as precious to me as Big Mama has been to you!

Oh nooooooooooooo........

Thanks very much all your condolences for Big Mama. She was a great frog and delighted young and old who met her!
I was so surprised just a while ago. I have a real nice neighbor named Raul. He makes the best Tomatillo salsa in the world. Every once in a while he brings us a pint to enjoy. Well the door bell rang just a few minutes ago with Raul standing there with a familiar container.Yum..I was thinking but the contents were green but it was not salsa..it was this frog he found in a drain at his house. He wanted me to have it for my pond.

I took him right away out back and set him free near the edge of the pond. He starting hopping in the wrong direction so I had to redirect him the right way. He was a bit dazed and confused.

He finally started hopping closer to the water. He stopped on some rocks to catch his breath and proceeded to hop around past the bog to a area by the falls. He has been resting there since. I think he may be an Oregon Spotted frog, but not sure. He is not a bull frog..that is for sure. These frogs can be hunted by bull frogs so I hope he finds a real good hiding place.

Here he is in the little nook he found by the falls. Should be safe here!.

I found my first frog of the season hiding in my sedum that was still to be planted. I took some pictures then when I went to plant the sedum he hopped into the HOUSE....
Good luck little guy!!!

I'm so sorry you lost Big Mama! How wonderful that you new little guy looks happy in his surroundings. He's a real cutie!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

That is a very pretty little frog. Hope he lives a long life.

Bea,

I think he is a nice looking froggie boy. Your neighbor is a hero...

Funny how they know what we are like. I have had people "return" my Llama, peacock, goat etc... None of which were mine......Once a very drunk couple showed up at my door crying and apologizing that their dog ate my goat. Which did not happen.....

Oh Bea, I am so sorry. I loved seeing the pictures of Big Mama, will miss her immensely!!

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Bea, I am so happy for you that you have a new little friend to distract you from the loss of Big Mama! What a sweet neighbor. It may just be me, but in my mind it is obvious you should name him "Salsa".

Eugene, OR

That's a great idea!!!

Oh, Bea. I just saw this. I'm so sorry about Big Mama. Who would have thought she'd get stuck? At least she did not go unnoticed or unnapreciated in her lifetime. She had you to tell of her exploits in the pond.

And then Raul's gift made me tear up. How unexpected!! And how utterly sweet and thoughtful of him. People amaze you sometimes, don't they?

RJ..Did not occur to call him Salsa. I like it! Salsa It is!

Kathy. Yes it was very sweet of Raul. He and his wife and son have been great neighbors. They are moving to AZ in July for 18 months while his wife works on her Masters. Hopefully the people who rent their house will be good neighbors and frog lovers!

They should make it a requirement that the renters be frog lovers!!

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Sorry to hear about Big Mama. It's very nice to have such wonderful neighbors. Hope your new addition does well in your pond.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Kathy..yep they will have to be frog and bee lovers too. My yard is full of bee's in the summer! I hope they keep will keep up the house & garden while my neighbors are away.

Have not spotted him yet today. He is probally hiding out after the trauma of yesterday. Found a new baby bull frog who is so cute. I will post the pic's in a while.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Send some of those bees my way. Magic spends a lot of time chasing them. Sahara has picked it up, too, and seeing as she's 30 lbs soaking went and very athletic, she's added the bee hunting component of leaping and twisting mid-air to get them.

Last night when I let Magic in, he was drooling. I think he must have gotten stung.

Anyway, if they keep this up, the bees will pick up their trousers and head elsewhere!!

Oh BeaHive, I just became aware of Big Mama's fate on the reflections thread. I'm so sorry. Was Raul aware that she was dead or was his frog gift a lovely coincidence?

So sorry to hear about Mama's fate! She was good frog. How nice of your neighbor's to bring Salsa to you. He's very cute and will carry on Mama's tradition, I'm sure.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Margaret. Raul did not know about Big Mama's passing. She was a great frog with tons of personality.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh, I thought he brought you Salsa because he had just heard that Big Mama was gone. How sweet for him to just make sure your frog population is thriving!!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

My shower frog is back for the season!!!!!

I was in the courtyard last evening and happened to look down and see a tiny toad about 1 1/4". He was stuck between the bricks and really pulling to try to get out. I got a weeder and moved one brick just slightly and he came out. I put him over by the pond on some moss. Hope he stays out of trouble.

A second frog story: When I took my potted plants to the plant sale I found a 2" green frog in the back of my truck. The girl that was there put him in a flower pot and secured him with a top on it. When I got home I carefully took him into the courtyard and dumped him out---NO FROG! Now I'm going to have to search the cab of my truck for this little frog. Opened the door and was deciding where to start and there he was sitting on the door handle on the other side. He was very nice and waited for me to pick him up and then he was deposited in the courtyard also.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Willow. What cute stories! So glad you came to the rescue. It is horrible when you find one of these creatures in trouble.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I love that we is a buncha girls who drive trucks and get dirty and play with frogs . . . how cool is that?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I drive a 2003 Ford Ranger and I love it. My DH loves his car. I will have to post a picture of my truck.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Wish I had a truck...maybe one day! In the meanwhile I will use my Pacifica. It holds alot when the seats are down. Just can't hall loose dirt! I am tempted to get a pair of overalls...but I think my daughter would have me committed. She about dies if her friends see me in my fishing waders and boots. She does not understand that the pond water is cold and I refuse to put on a bathing suit. That would be more scary for her friends than my waders! LOL

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I agree, I also have waders for the ponds. And I did buy a pair of tan bib overalls. And the neighbor whistles at me when I wear them. Don't know what his problem is.^_^
I gave up on swinsuits when I hit 50 and that was to late.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I gave up on swimsuits after my first kid. The body got back to a size 4, but all the parts were not where they started out! If I had to it was a swim suit under shorts . Ah..the good old bikini days! Now I get nerd tans!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

My brothers have made a point of shocking their kids, I think. That should be a benefit of age - you get to shock whomever you want to.

Patricia, I was driving my brother's Ford Ranger (1997, I think) for a couple of years. It's a great truck - I wish I could buy it from him.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

If I can't put a full grown goat in it I don't drive it.....

Ginger

P.S. You can get a donkey in a sedan if you do it right...

PERTH, Australia

Yeh, beadmom, I've encountered them on the road many times. LOL
