CLOSED: Small brown insect

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

This little guy was all over my Jacob's Ladder. He (she?) was about 1/4 inch long and seemed to be pollinating, but that is just a guess. Anyone know what it is?

It looks like a robber fly, a good pollinator.

Sinks Grove, WV

This fly appears to be in the family Syrphidae (flower flies. hover flies, etc.). This is a very large family, with thousands of species that can vary considerably in appearance; some are very good bee/wasp mimics. Many are good pollinators (robber flies, being predators, are not), and the larvae of many species feed on aphids and other small soft-bodied insects. Thanks guys!
