I am new to Arizona, so I am not sure if this is a common thing to find here. In our backyard are TONS of these small (1 inch long) cocoons that look like seashells and are hard like seashells. They are not usually on the surface of the ground, but we find many of them when we dig into the soil. When they are cleaned off they are almost white, but these in the picture have dirt on them. Does anyone have any idea what these are? Thank you for your help!!

at one time arizona was part of the sea, as we all were.
These are snails, they look like decollate snails, Rumina decollata; a species that preys on other snails - see http://tinyurl.com/pgeggy for an example.
Perhaps as a wee bit of consolation, they might be "fossilized" seashells! This way, your find is way cool and not at all all that disappointing. It kinda stinks when you find something you think is a bit cool, only to turn out it is something mundane and, well, stupid. I know. I find all sorts of stupid things. LOL But, I let the imagination go wild and have my fun anyway. fossil shells - wowee! ;-)
that is definitely a good way to look at it
