My husband has been getting a warning about an internet problem but we think that if we click on it; then we really WILL have a problem. I know there's a good site for telling what's spoof and what's legit but I forgot the name.
Best site to find spoof
Snopes.com?
That's it! thanks.
Yeah, I agree with Kwanjin that Snopes is probably the best place to go and check these preposterous stories we all receive from well-meaning acquaintances of ours. Before you click anywhere in these frivolous messages, open another tab in your browser and visit snopes.com. Odds are if you have heard of it, they have heard about it a long time ago and researched it. After a while, just reading how the message is written, you can just dump the message and not even worry about going into Snopes.
Good ones going around these days:
- Banks are NOT contacting you to verify your account info; specially if you do not have an account with them.
- Paypal is not contacting you to verify your account info; specially if you do not have an account with them. And even if you do, they don't do that.
- Billionnaires are NOT giving their money away if you forward an email.
- Famous Amos is not giving away his cookie recipe. Neither is Colonel Sanders.
- The bereaved widow of high-ranking 3rd world country's finance minister does NOT need your help to get money out of their country. Her husband did that before being disposed of by his rivals.
- Russian brides are NOT after my athletic body
- I will NOT improve the size of whatever the good Lord gave me by clicking on a link.
- There is NO such thing as cheap Viagra or Cialis.
I could go on and on.
Be careful out there.
Sylvain.
Sure thing, WS!!! ^_^
I got an email the other day, from one of those third world countries, and it told me if I did not respond, they would find me, and I was warned, DO NOT contact the police or my attorney, or they would prosucute me!
Now is that a scare tactic or what!
I forwarded it to the Texas attorney general, they love things like that!
I hope they get some of them anyway!
Yes, please be careful what you open.
There is no such thing as a free $$$ gift certificate from K-Mart, or any other place, it will cost you something!
Linda Kay
My fave I heard this month was that you can be tracked by your cell phone. "They" can listen in on your conversations and the only way you can stop it is by removing the battery. I said, "That sounds and aweful lot like the movie Eagle Eye." I was told, "No, no!!! It's true! They CAN do that." I got such a laugh out of it.
That's scary, Linda Kay. I'm glad you had the good sense to forward it to the right entities. My DD got caught in an internet scam a few years ago. She ended up owing her bank $3,000!!!
If I get an e-mail from someone I don't know, I just delete it.
Kwanjin, if you remove the battery from your cell phone, noone will be able to listen in on your conversations because even YOU won't be able to make calls. I say THEY can listen all they want. Between my real estate clients expressing their pipe dreams and my wife reminding me to pick up celery on my way home, THEY will get so bored with my conversations, they'll find someone else to bug very quickly. By the way, celery was $1.49 each at Winn-Dixie yestereay. Keep this under your hat.
Conspirationally,
Sylvain.
The most "they" will get from mine is...hmm...I feel like they're watching me now. Maybe I should send this in code. ^_^
Years ago when cell phones were in their infancy, "they" could listen to your calls. All "they" needed was a slightly modified radio scanner... or in some cases a normal radio would pick up random calls. At that time "they" could be just about anyone that wanted to take the trouble to do so.
Now, with the current phone technology, "they" can locate you by triangulating the signal from the cell towers. But "They" need expensive equipment that is not within the budget of most police departments or the average snoop. As for their being able to listen in... maybe... but most people are so tired of hearing other peoples phone calls in public that I rather doubt they want to bother listening to most of our calls.
BUT
celery was $1.49 each at Winn-Dixie yestereay
As for the promises of wealth for forwarding an email I always forward them...to the trash can ;~)
Now, if we could all call someone (anyone we know) on our cell phone at 10AM eastern today and begin the conversation with: "The nine spun glass roosters from Geneva arrived intact yesterday" and hang up, we could ALL have intelligence service knocking at our door, too.
And the celery, I am told, was delicious with spinach dip, little baby carrots and small lebanese cucumber spears. I wasn't here all day but Gail truly enjoyed it. Oh, I am doomed. For sure now, I'll have unexpected visitors.
That,s funny: as I write these lines, a large black car just pulled in the driveway. Who could that be? 4 men dressed in what looks like plywood suits are walking this way. They have guns. Better take cover. Gotta get inside. Noooooooooooo
LOL
I've debated this issue with a few friends in the past. My answer? "I have nothing to hide, and if it keeps me safe, they can listen all they want. They can even come in the house & snoop."
I would like enough advanced notice so I can at least vaccuum & clean the bathroom, though. LOL Maybe make some iced tea... cookies, something. Make 'em feel welcome. "OOps sir.. I just cleaned. Gonna have to ask you to take those shoes off. Yup, right there, on the mat.. thanks"
You all are great!!! I'm sorry I missed out on the celery. We don't have Winn-Dixie here. My opinion is that if it sounds off the wall, it is.
i went after celery sat but at 1.79 i said whoa no way. mercy there cauliflower is 2 .79 or 2.89 head. pitiful!!
Buying cauliflower is like buying gold here. Don't get me started on beets and rutabagas.
Eat your vegetables, they say. I purchased a spaghetti squash that cost me $6 the other day. And those are regular vegetables, not hoity-toity organic stuff. What is this world coming to?
Take care, all.
Sylvain.
It is awful, my h. will not eat from mexico. but they all say mexico unless like one store hee took sticker off sign said usa i found undeneath some forgot to get sticker off. you nevr know, but prices are ridculous.all this happened last 4- 5 months it seems. canned goods to.
I use craigs list to sell things that I don't need anymore or want, and you wouldn't believe the responses I get. The scammers can't speak english enough to type there spoof, and always want a middleman to drop the check off, you keep the difference$$, and send them your stuff you had for sale, LOL, where do these people crawl out from.
