Have you ever seen a 2-headed lily?

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I found this in my yard. The stalk has divided in two. I think it's African Queen, but I'm not sure.

Cool! How wide and flat is the stem? Be sure to take lots and lots of pics!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I'll let you know. All I noticed was that each of the 2 stems seemed to be only about 1/2 of the size of the one they came from. (I hope they can support the weight of the lilies when they open.) I didn't notice any flatness, but I'll take a closer look. Have you seen this happen before?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I've seen something like it many times, and on many plants other than lilies. If the stem is flattened then it called fasciation. Blooms and stems can come out fused sometimes and it's not a bad thing, probably won't happen again next year. Just one of Mother Nature's little quirks.

I checked and found a pic of the two-headed lily I had last year.

Wow, that's quite the lily. Will definitely check mine tomorrow to see if that's what it is. Thanks.

Awesome. You just have to love that, don't you? Twice as nice!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Well that is cool looking, Moby :-)

Perenniallyme, I am certainly no expert but I have seen fasciation a few times and it does seem to have happened with me almost exclusively on trumpets - however it is hard to tell if yours is fasciated or just two-headed like Moby's ^_^

Perennial, I can't wait to see the blooms on that monster!! Please keep us posted!

Mary-Mobalina, do you have a bloom picture of that monster of yours? :) hmmmmmm?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

No, don't think I took a picc since it looked normal once it bloomed. It wasn't like that super-fasciated monster I had a few years ago.

I went out to try to take more pics, but it was too sunny, and the thing is hairy as an ape - will probably have to remove a bunch of its green fur to get a decent pic. But I did discover - the stem starts out normal, then looks like 2 fused stems for a while before splitting in two. It doesn't seem to be fasciated. The stems are round. Will try again later.

Thats is too cool. It would be great if it doubles all it's blooms too!! ^_^

Hi again. I finally got some more pictures, but they're nothing spectacular. Here's where the stem splits again. I still couldn't get a good close-up.

Here's the right side of the split.

That's the whole show, so far. There are quite a few buds on each side. I hope the split stem is strong enough to support the flowers.

My lily held up fine but if you're worried about it, you could use some of that stretchy garden tape and do a figure 8 a couple inches above where they split.

Thanks Moby. I think I'll wait and see.

How is your 2-headed beastie doing?

Found another one recently on Divine

Oh no - I forgot to take more pics. (Raining again now, or I'd go out and photograph what's left of it.) It turned out to be davidii - so at least the blooms weren't too heavy, though that tends to be a floppy-stemmed one for me in general. The stem isn't very strong, so actually I think that the double stem helped it a bit, though I did stake it. But maybe it'll prove to be of benefit to this lily, and it'll be a genetic survivor. Welcome two-headed davidii! - And that's just divine, Moby, that you'll have twice the blooms on Divine.
