Found this one freshly hatched waiting for the wings to inflate completely
I believe that it is a type of drone fly.

From the hairiness of this specimen, it may be in the genus Merodon, such as Merodon equestris, the narcissus bulb fly - see http://tinyurl.com/p2tgze
In feeding on living plant tissue, this species appears an exception in regard to most syrphid flies, whose larvae tend to be predaceous on small, soft-bodied insects such as aphids.
Hmmm you might be right, I found this one sitting on an amaryllis leaf.
