I was just outside getting ready to water - it was cold this morning and I saw this dragonfly on the boston fern. What is it? It's what i would call common - but seem to have a narrow amount of time as an adult before it dies.

This appears to be a common green darner (Anax junius); it is found in all the lower 48 states and southern Canada. See http://tinyurl.com/m4qc5 for images and much more information.
