This little bugger (and lots of very similar looking friends) have decided that my home is their home too. I apologize for the terrible quality of pic I'll try to get a better but does anyone know what kind of ant this is? I live in Chicago and it is a pretty darn small guy a few mm in length. The terro baits seem to be killing them well.
What kind of ant?
The image is too fuzzy for a positive i.d., but its overall shape is consistent with that of carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.). You might try contacting the University of Illinois Extension Service's Urban Gardening Office at 3807 W 111th St in Chicago to see if they could be of any assistance; and, if you have lots of time on your hands, try bringing up the images at AntWeb's list of all ant species known from Illinois
(http://tinyurl.com/ova3qz) to see if you can find a match.
Thanks for that site....there is a ton on there. These guys are little. Aren't carpenter ants pretty big? My neighbor had them and they were at least 1/4 inch, these ones are about 3-4 mm. I'll try to get a better picture.
Yes, 3 to 4 mm would be on the very small side for carpenter ants; 6mm is about as small as one would expect to find. Good luck in your search for an answer, and if you can get clearer images of both a dorsal and lateral view of one of your 'guests,' you could try resubmitting to this site.
