you might want to try a different leave than the pink varigation.if there is almost no green, it will probably die,you do need some green for it to propagate.

African Violet Hints & Tips
ah, well, i didn't know that. evidentally neither did the person who sold me the leaves. Don't have a parent plant to get another leaf from. Dang!!! That one was for my mama.
Here is a photo, the leaf only has a teeny bit of green as you can see. How disappointing.
thanks for the info, Bonnie. Even if it is sad news...
Don't give up yet! Yes, the leaves with only a little green are harder to root, but it is possible. How long ago did you stick it? Try cutting it in half, or around the edges to get rid of the brown. Do you have any fish emulsion or I think . . . oh, what is it . . . liquid seaweed? I've heard if you mix up one or the other and use the mix to water the leaf that it will help with the photosen-sa-thingy! (yes, I use big words!) LOL. Couldn't hurt to try, anyway.
well, I will try. We'll see. It makes sense that my chances aren't good, but it's true I've got nothing to lose. no, I don't have any fish emulsion right now but there is a garden center here in town that sells it, I am on my way out to the grocery store, maybe I'll stop for some. I use to use it years ago, and can always find other plants to use it on so it won't be a waste.
I agree with Syrumani! It's not too late at all.The base does not look like it is rotting. If you have it domed take the lid off,at least for several hours a day.

Photosen-sa-thingy, it's getting so scientific! :)
^_^
I had a similar leaf rooting problem. There was mostly white on the leaf. I read on another forum to feed it some fish emulsion food. Just once, to help it put out a little more green. It worked and now I have a baby growing from the leaf. I would trim off the brown edges of your leaf. Maybe that will save it from further rotting. When I plant leaves, I cut off the top part of leaf. They say the leaf stops growing and will make new plantlets faster. So far, it's worked for me.
Thanks, Imadigger!
I bought fish emulsion today. Just a wee bit in a gallon, right? I just put a couple of drops. It is scary trying something new, especailly for some violets I really love.
I got some too, at the local garden center. Hope it works.
It is a great food, but be careful about using it for a long length of time, especially if you wick or bottom water. If it is not flushed out every so often it tends to build up and erode the bases of stems. You can always switch back and forth from it,to plain water, then a food with less nitrogen.
To add to that, if you have your violets or leaves on mats, make sure to clean them every once in a while, by soaking in a bleach solution. The fish emulsion tends to stay in the mats. I washed the mats after watering, first with the fish emul, then plain water twice. Then I washed them and continues to use reg fert. 1/8 to 1/4 concentration every other filling of tray. It seems to take 21/2 cups of water for each tray.
I water from the top. I can't imagine having it smell in mats!
You also need to wash out the clorox with clear water or you can damage your plants.
Sally, your germ phobia is getting out of hand (LOL)..........I don't know anyone who grows that doesn't use capillary matting in some way. Marjorie uses the black kind from Cape Cod.............I have never smelled a capillary matting and I have many in my home on many gro light stands.............
When you say fish emulsion, you're talking about fish fertilizer, right? I bought some yesterday for all my outside stuff and now it smells like fish. Ummm...probably a big "duh!" But I don't want that smell in the house. If I just use a couple of drops will it do any good?
Maybe I'll wait to the first of the month ($$) and then go get my VF-11. My violets, etc love it!
No, I mean the fish smell if it is in the mats. Gads, the smell of just a few drops in water! :O I can't smell it once I water plants with it though. I don't add it to plants that are fine. 99% of my plants are doing great. Just a few need some extra nitrogen I guess.
I'm not phobic, ha! Just love to have everything clean. My shelves also.
I use Seaweed kelp with no odor...............think I got it from Cape Cod........not sure............can check if anyone wants to know.
I'll check it out, thank you.
I did my first "de-necking surgery" this week, to semi mini Little Inca Girl. Not only was it necked, but there were two if them growing together. One wound up with very few roots and no root ball, but maybe it will make it. I put the two I now have after the separation into my little greenhouse plastic box and after a few days, no signs of shock, death or even wilting.
