what do you use for mosquitoes?

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

I have been using OFF spray, but I find the odor VERY offensive and seems to stay with you. It is so strong, I don't think I can use it anymore. I also worry having that stuff on my skin. Any ideas for keeping these nasty things away while working outside? And any tips for kiddos?

mosquitoes do not like the smell of eucalyptus oil, nor skin so soft by avon. lol, they also don't like garlic I am told, but who wants to smell like garlic? I prefer eucalyptus oil

Also here's a home remedy for a repellent

Herbal Insect Repellent

2 1/2 teaspoons total of any combination of the following essential oils: basil, cedarwood, citronella, juniper, lemon, myrrh, palmarosa, pine, rose geranium and/or rosemary (available at health food stores)

1 cup 190-proof grain alcohol (available in liquor stores)

Place ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake vigorously. Transfer to small bottles for storage. To use, rub a small amount on any exposed skin (test first to be sure your skin will not be adversely affected by the repellent) or dab it on clothing.

Experiment a little to find which essential oils work best with your body chemistry. If you’re lucky, you also will like the way they smell; otherwise, add a few drops of peppermint oil to fine-tune the fragrance.

did some searching for you. here's what I have found so far.

The most effective natural mosquito repellent at the time of writing is Repel Lemon Eucalyptus.

# provided 120.1 minutes of mosquito protection, more than a repellent with a low concentration of the chemical DEET (Off Skintastic for Kids with 4.75% DEET provided 88.4 minutes of protection) and less than Off Deep Woods with 23.8% DEET, which provided 301.5 minutes of protection.

# A study by the US Department of Agriculture compared four synthetic mosquito repellents and eight natural mosquito repellents and found that Repel Lemon Eucalyptus was the most effective repellent, more so than a 7% DEET repellent.

Interesting.
Ok yeah, I tried the skin so soft, I don't remember what fragrance it was, but good gracious that stuff stunk to the moon and made me miserable. :(
Do they make Skin so soft that doesn't smell bad? Well, I guess the awful smell is what keeps the skeeters away lol.....

I seen in an ad, some kind of OFF or similar that is on a clip on like a button kind of thing that you wear clipped to your clothes, has anyone tried those?

Marilyn Glen st. Mar, FL(Zone 9a)

I have tried the off 'bracelet', but I couldn't see where it did a thing. And yes, I used Skin so soft once, and also couldn't stand the smell. No wonder the mosquitoes didn't bother you and it seemed oily to me too. I couldn't stand that. I only feel 'oily' if I'm at the beach with suntan oil on. lol

I like my mosquitos with Durkee's sauce, seaweed and a whole wheat bun

Put listerine in a spray bottle, spray it around the doors, windows (not on) or where you are sitting...dead as a doornail they are..cheap/cheap, much better than sprays that only last 2 or 3 hrs.

well can you spray it on your clothes? does it leave an oily stuff that won't wash off or stains?
LOL minty fresh gardening!

Going to go back and try to find the e-mail that was sent to me...

Yes, listerine! I had forgotten about that . they 'say' it's the best thing going. don't think it leaves a stain either. I've never tried it,,,but now that my memory has been refreshed, I'm going to get a mist bottle and fill 'er up with high test for those little pesky varmints!
