First Egg!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

You all might recall when I put some big stock eggs under my bantam hen around Christmas last year. She hatched 2 chicks. One was a Dominique pullet and the other was a White Rock roo. The roo is big enough to eat now. I was telling DH yesterday morning that the pullet should start laying soon When I checked the eggs yesterday afternoon, I found her first egg. It was sitting beside the duck egg which made it look even smaller. In fact, I thought it was a pebble. It is the same size and shape as a "Whopper" malted milk ball. It was so dirty it was nearly the same color, too. LOL I need to do a lot of work on my pen. With all the rain we have had it is very wet and muddy everywhere.

I just realized when looking at that pic, how dirty my key board is. With everything else I have to clean, a dirty keyboard is way down on my priority list. LOL If under the keys is as bad as the top of the keys, it's a wonder it even works any more.

Congratulations! It looks like a ping pong ball.. :) Really, there is a certain excitement that is unmatched when it comes to finding first eggs! Time for a first egg party!

I have a cuckoo colored cross that was purchased as an Olive Egger that is laying the biggest blue/green eggs I've ever seen.. but there are no hens out there with blue legs! I can't figure out who it is.

I am afraid half the last hatch was roos. We will eat good, I suppose but I do like getting the eggs too. You wouldn't think a grown person could get such satisfaction from something as simple as picking up eggs. Life is good!

Cute cute cute! I love those itty bitty eggs! They are like toy eggs. Yay for her first egg!

I really like the morning "search"... I am glad to hear it!! :) I wasn't sure if it was just me..
I had a big really dark egg today that I thought was beautiful... I told Cody.. He goes.. "Mom.. it's an egg" I'm like...well, yeah, but it's so pretty! Fearing I'm just too simple. LOL

Oh ZZ, you too, have fallen under the spell of the beautiful egg. I know it well....

Good grief!!! I can't tell you how good it is to hear that I'm not the only crazy. ZZ's If your simple I'm right along with you. I won't even let my wife gather the eggs. I tell her thats my job. There is nothing like the first egg, I don't even try to ulnderstand it. The first egg is like the glass slipper. Congrats Cajun.

Haystack! Did you finally figure out how to post pictures?! Where is the picture of YOU?!

Catscan, beautiful as those eggs are, I am sure they would be a tremendous disappointment, because they would not hatch, and really, what is the point of an egg that doesn't hatch?! (unless it's edible).

They do so hatch! To reveal stunning miniatures of the Russian Royal Family.

You mean you're not suppose to eat them?

But the Russian royal family miniatures are not cute and fluffy, do not walk around of their own accord, do not peep incessantly in a very annoying but cute way, do not provide garden compo(o)st, do not look at you adoringly when you provide handfuls of chick feed, and furthermore they do not grow up into lovely chickens that will lay more faberge eggs for you. I mean....booooooring...... ;-)

I have been deceived!

Mox I have a bunch of pic's on my computer that I can post, but that guy that was teacking me how to get them on the computer from the camera, flew the coop so to speak. His wife can't even find him. ??????

Now Mox as the picture of me!!! Do you know what a mugwump is? It's a bird sitting on a fence with his mug on one side and his wump on the other / now if you can imagine that, then you know what I look like. LOL Gotta love me Mox

It's OK Catscan, I understand that it's a disappointment. Many people are taken in by the Faberge scam. If you'd like, I can send you some REAL eggs. ;-) (with the sock yarn, of course, although right now I'm in the middle of a variegated turquoise/green/gold yarn, which would probably offend your gentle sock color sensibilities).

I have my set of five rosewood number 2 double pointed knitting needles warming up for a sock explosion. Of course that requires rather fine yarn. I am equally well equipped for sport (DK) or worsted weight--but with ordinary plastic or metal double pointed needles.

Sets of double pointed needles always remind me of the knitting sheep in "Alice in Wonderland"--who kept pulling out more and more needles and bewildering poor Alice.

But to get back on track and dodge being called an unrepentant thread hijacker--Maybe I could knit fine egg cozies for first pullet eggs...You can't tell me there wouldn't be a market for lovely little netted bags--sheer so you can see the eggs through them with maybe the date and name of the pullet embroidered on them?

Here is the current roving....

and the one ply single coming out of it right now. I think it would make a lovely pullet eggie bag. I haven't decided what I will ply it with yet...

We could start a web-site: "Everything Unnecessary for the Urban Chicken Owner". Very recession chic:0)

And those are gorgeous colours!

I found my first two eggs on Easter morning & promptly hard boiled them, then dyed them pink & blue for Easter! I didn't have the heart to eat them. My mom just shook her head, a 28 yr old thrilled over an egg. I was so proud of my little banty tho.

I saved mine and blew them out. I had to. They were so cute!!!
