Leggy Zinnias

Brainerd, MN

I may have let the zinnia seeds I'd sown go a bit too long in the dome thing I use to germinate -- and now I think they are way leggy -- about 1.5 to 2 inches tall with only their first two leaves. Tomorrow is about the soonest I can get to them to pot them into small containers. Is there a chance they will survive and be healthy or will I just be wasting my time in the long run by potting them to cups?

Yeah, they'll probably be fine if you can get them into some sun fairly soon. Got a southern window?

Zinnias are one of the easy sprouters that I don't usually start inside - but I'm assuming that you are defying the Minnesota cold, eh?

Yes, Minnesota weather and even worse this year than usual - we are still getting some night time temperatures of 30 degrees! Where will their true leaves grow, by the first leaves or further down? I am wondering if I should (and how to) pinch them back when they start to mature to get them bushier.

Definitely not yet - the true leaves will be above the first set. And really, as short as your growing season is, I'd consider just planting more instead of pinching - you want them to bloom asap and the more you pinch, the longer it will take. Just my .02 cents.... >smile< ...

...and to be completely honest, they are not a plant I've ever pinched, anyway.
