The seeds you use do matter

Troy, NY(Zone 5b)

I purchased many seeds this spring and I have to say the ones I ordered from select seeds have grown much bigger and are much more healthy than the seeds I purchased at lowes and walmart.

I have dianthus and foxglove from lowes and select seeds and they are like night and day. I sowed all of them at the same time and they have all been subject to exactly the same conditions. I will be buying "better" seeds next year as sometimes paying for quality is worth the difference in price.

Yeah - I got some of the Ferry-Morris (the brand Lowes carries) seeds for a bunch of zinnias that came out a much different form than they were supposed to - so I agree completely. And really, they aren't that much cheaper, a lot of the time.

Northeast, IL(Zone 5b)

The cheap pelletized seeds I bought at some big box store have had a pathetic germination rate. I got 6 impatiens and 8 coleus from packages that contained at least two dozen seeds each. But, the rather expensive native perennial seeds I got at the expensive local garden center did not fare much better.

Botanical Interests and Renee's Garden seeds have done very well for me.

I agree with Renee's, but have never tried Botanical Interests... hmmm.... another place you might like that has a non-typical selection is Summer Hill seeds - we had a co-op with the owner, Robin, and everything was great. She really bent over backwards. And I had great germination rates off of her stuff, some 100%. http://summerhillseeds.com/
