I am having no luck propagating wild bergamot/mondarda, i.e., growing from seed. The plants I get seem to invariably damp off even though I am not having problems with all my vegetable transplants or other flowers I am growing from seed. Is there something special one has to do when growing bergamot/monarda from seed? I was hoping I was going to be able to produce some beautiful red monarda from seed. Should I give up and purchase monarda that was propagated via cuttings or divisions?
Propagating Wild Bergamot/Monarda
Try this...Mix 2 capfuls of 3% hydrogen peroxide per 1/2 gallon of water. Water your seedlings with this. It has always worked for me. Also...Did you plant them in potting soil or seed starting mix? Seed starting mix is better to me.
Thanks for your reply. I am using a Fafard general soilless potting mix to grow them. I have experimented with anti-fungals like hydrogen peroxide and chamomile tea. I have had good luck with diluted chamomile tea. I'll try the hydrogen peroxide in the future and see what happens.
