Found several of these caterpillars on bullrushes by a pond.
Anyone recognize this fella?
Here's one shot, then I have one of his/her(?) back.
Thanks!
Deb
CLOSED: caterpillar at pond edge
This appears to be a larva of a sawfly in the family Tenthredinidae - see
http://tinyurl.com/cl4njg for an example. Sawflies in the genus Eutomostethus have been reported as feeding on bulrushes, but I have been unable to locate an image of one.
Thanks, Suunto. I found a photo of a larva of that family and it is very similar, so that must be it or something very closely related.
Shame. :) I thought this fella was kinda cute, but he's going to turn into a less than adorable fly. Ah well.
Appreciate the I.D.!
